Subject: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 10 May 11 - 03:08 PM For me one of the true classic Art songs ... "why do they ride for their money" Amazing night riders lament |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: katlaughing Date: 10 May 11 - 03:25 PM I LOVE Art's version of this song. Thanks for putting it on soundclick, Dan. For those who may not know, Art has a wonderful, STUPENDOUS, CD out The Older I Get, The Better I Was...priceless, imo. There is a lot about it here at the Mudcat, too. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: gnu Date: 10 May 11 - 03:31 PM Excellent! |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Charley Noble Date: 10 May 11 - 03:37 PM Olddude- Certainly one of my all time favorites. Nice job singing! Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 10 May 11 - 04:22 PM Art who wrote this song? It is traditional my friend or recent because I never heard it other than from you my dear friend |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 10 May 11 - 04:25 PM by the way, soundclick always appends my name first. I had nothing to do with the song, just posted it cause it is soooo Art and so beautiful. love the guitar work also .. great work |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: katlaughing Date: 10 May 11 - 04:27 PM I forgot to say, one can also get more of Art from Folk Legacy Records. Just put his name in the search box. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 10 May 11 - 04:39 PM One thing that makes me such a big fan. There is no backup singer, no big backup band with horns and strings. It is just Art, one guitar entertaining a whole generation of folk music lovers. You know, I mean it from the heart. He has taught me more about picking just listening to his work then anyone I can think of. He taught me how to not just play but entertain when I perform out once again. During his career he touched the hearts of everyone fortunate to hear him live. Now that his career is over, He teaches wanna be singers and guitarist like me how the old songs should be done and how to properly do them. A true treasure of a person. No wonder he is so loved by everyone including me |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: maeve Date: 10 May 11 - 04:44 PM I thought it was written by Michael Burton, Dan. Bill Staines, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Nanci Griffith (among others) have all recorded it. http://www.nightriderslament.com/bio.htm I especially like Art's version. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 10 May 11 - 04:50 PM Thanks Maeve!! |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Art Thieme Date: 10 May 11 - 08:05 PM Yep, Michael Burton wrote the song. There was a thread a while back asking about him---and this song. As I remember it, Michael Burton is an enigma to many. Thanks for liking what I did with this song. Keeping in mind that I don't yodel at all---and never liked the vocal interlude, as it is usually sung, at all--you can see why I chose to simply play the tune on the guitar at that specific point in the chorus. Thanks folks, Art |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: pdq Date: 10 May 11 - 08:24 PM I doubt that Nanci Griffith yodels either. She got Don Edwards as guest yodeler on her version. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 11 May 11 - 06:00 AM Art Thieme is a great singer. Art Thieme is a great singer. Art Thieme is a great singer. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 11 May 11 - 09:57 AM Naw Bud, just think, take away his incredible voice, his wonderful guitar skills, his sense of humor, his story telling, and his heart and what do you have ... ahhh ME LOL see he is not all that ... :-) |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: katlaughing Date: 11 May 11 - 10:25 AM Never heard it with a yodel as I first heard it from you, Art, and like it jest fine. Burl:-> He's our Fine Art, Fine Art, Fine Art!:-) |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: GUEST,C. Ham Date: 11 May 11 - 11:26 AM Ian Tyson also has a great version of "Night Rider's Lament." |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Big Mick Date: 11 May 11 - 12:45 PM There are many great versions of this wonderful piece, but in my mind it is Art's that stands head and shoulders above them all. The reason is the phrasing he uses. So many folks have just sung/recorded this song. But Art, he tells the story. That is why I count him as one of the major influences on my singing style. I wonder if some singers are listening to the words they sing (I think of those who sing Hard Times to uptempo, almost disco tempo. Once even heard a drum machine), or if they are just focused on showing off their vocal skills, or if they are trying to be unique for unique's sake? Not with Art. He understands the tale and how to use that unique voice and phrasing to render it perfectly. This is what distinguishes the OK from the great. By the way, Brother Art, I don't yodel either...... All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: GUEST Date: 12 Jul 11 - 05:37 PM Art, I have not heard your version as of yet, but knowing you, as a person of varied talent (and old , even corny puns) and as an individual with a fascinating personality; (I know! This sentence just goes on and on) I greatly anticipate treating my ears and psyche. I'm sure the pleasure will be all mine! Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Andrez Date: 12 Jul 11 - 08:04 PM Hi Old Dude, is there another link to Nght Riders Lament that can be made available? Regardless of which browser I use I get this error: Blocked (code 3)! Apparently wrong ID! and am then advised to "Please go back to www.soundclick.com". Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: olddude Date: 12 Jul 11 - 08:21 PM AndreZ try this link Art |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: open mike Date: 13 Jul 11 - 01:58 AM I often sing the last chorus as "We're losing our "hair" (instead of share) but I will have to remember the line "Why do you rope a shar pei?" for next time i sing this... |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: DonMeixner Date: 13 Jul 11 - 09:39 AM I have often said if I wasn't stuck with my own voice I wouldn't mind Art Thieme's. And I have always had a partiality to Art's instrumental style both on guitar and banjo. They fit singing a song better than just about anyone's. His version of "The Golden Vanity" is in my mind the definitive version. (Well, to me anyway.) Nice job on "Night Rider's Lament". Art does it just fine. Don |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Andrez Date: 13 Jul 11 - 08:19 PM It's a great version of a great song! Thanks for the new link Old Dude, this time it came through loud and clear all the way to Australia :-) Cheers, Andrez |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Waddon Pete Date: 27 Sep 13 - 05:39 AM While reading through this thread I was struck by the thought that Katlaughing was a great conduit for all things 'Art'. I wondered whether there was anyone else to take up the mantle. Art is a vital part of Mudcat and needs to be cherished. Just a thought. Peter |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme - Night Riders Lament From: Bettynh Date: 27 Sep 13 - 05:36 PM I found that link in this thread. There are more songs there for downloading. |
