At 11.00 am (UK time) today there's a programme on BBC Radio 4 about the cultural relationships between Britain and Ireland. It's presented by Joseph O'Connor. Should we worth a listen.

an unpleasant metaphor. Sounds like a post mortem report - so that's why the liver rejected it!

Hugh McDiarmid's poem The Weapon:

Scots steel tempered wi' Irish fire
Is the weapon that I desire.

'Scots steel tempered wi' Irish fire'

Even better if paid for with English subsidies?

Interseting stuff on the programme ' Coast ' last night on BBC2 about how neutral Ireland had secretly supported England and the USA during the Second world war.

English subsidies? Good on ye' Jim for picking that one up. Let's each run our own economies and we'll see who fares best.

I don't want to be too pedantic Dave, but Ireland helped the UK although I suppose this also helped England which is part of Great Britain. We should remember that England, like Scotland is a region of the UK and not an independent State ... yet.

Plenty of Irishmen fought and died and gave everything in World war 2. Admittedly fighting in divisions of the english army. Governments ...who bloody cares what they did. they just get us into the mess. Many Irish families gave the full measure when it came to combatting Hitler.

Morning Wood linked to this YouTube video of Morrissey's "Irish Blood, English Heart." It's a powerful song. Was this song used on the BBC 4 programme?
-Joe-

IRISH BLOOD, ENGLISH HEART
(Steven Morrissey, Alain Gordon Whyte)
(as sung by Morrissey)

Irish blood, English heart, This I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And no regime can buy or sell me

I've been dreaming of a time when
To be English is not to be baneful
To be standing by the flag not feeling shameful, Racist or partial

Irish blood, English heart, This I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And I will die with both of my hands untied

I've been dreaming of a time when
The English are sick to death of Labour, And Tories
And spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell
And denounce this royal line that still salute him,
And will salute him forever.

It's one of "those" lyrics sites, so I don't completely trust the transcription. Sounds pretty close to what I heard on the YouTube video.

Joe, The BBC2 program I watched was about the coast of Ireland and mentioned that Eire allowed the UK to use a short corridor from Northern Ireland through Irish territory to the Altlantic. There were no songs.
