Kitty of Coleraine
from County Derry, Northern Ireland

As beautiful Kitty one morning was tripping,
With a pitcher of milk from the fair of Coleraine,
When she saw him she stumbled, the pitcher it tumbled,
And all the sweet buttermilk watered the plain.
Oh! What shall I do now, 'twas looking at you now,
Sure, sure, such a pitcher I'll ne'er meet again.
'Twas the pride of my dairy, Oh, Barney McCleary,
You're sent as a plague on the girls of Coleraine.

He sat down beside her and gently did chide her,
That such a misfortune should give her such pain.
A kiss then he gave her, and before he did leave her,
She vowed for such pleasure, she'd break it again.
'Twas haymaking season, I can't tell the reason,
Misfortune will never come single 'tis plain,
For very soon after poor Kitty's disaster,
The divil a pitcher was whole in Coleraine.

could be classed as either being from County Antrim or County Londonderry / Derry....... Coleraine is in both, (the River Bann being the border between the two).....

I'm sure I may have posted this before... but maybe not... so here's the tune

I'm sure you did, Alison, because I remember mentioning that it reminded me of Kipling's Stalky & Co. Good thing I'm not mentioning it again--that would be repetitive.

Thanks, alison. I searched both the forum and the DT before adding this thread, and nothing came up for Kitty of Coleraine. Thanks for submitting it again under this heading.

In a copy in a songbook of 1828 it's 'I' rather than 'he' in the 2nd verse. Thomas Moore used the tune for "Ill Omens" in the 3rd issue of 'A Selection of Irish Melodies' (1810) giving also an alternatve (and older) tune 'Paddy's Resource".
