Does anyone have the chords for the version sung by Pete Seeger on "The Essential Pete Seeger?" I don't think it's the standard set of C and G chords because the song sounds distinctly minor.

Paul, I know the one you mean. The tune goes something like this.

I think it's in Lomax's "Folk Song U.S.A."

BTW, Woody sang this tune also with a different set of chords but the last line was ended in major like the tune he used for "Tom Joad."

My favorite version of JOHN HARDY is sung by SARAH CARTER recorded at the Carter Family's first re- cording session in Bristol Virginia in about 1929. It was includud in Harry Smith's Anthology which has been reissued. Smith's recordings opened up a whole new world for me and thousands of others in the early 1950's. Sarah Carter's version is so genuine "old timey" PARISH

The one I prefer, was played by an acoustic blues trio in Peterborough, ON, called Jackson Delta. It was very minor-ish. I'm sure that clears up nothing, right?

The version I'm most familiar with, the one Woody Guthrie borrowed for The Ballad of Tom Joad, was a pick and strum bass line in C like this:

John Hardy is a folk song. There are many different variants. I don't know which one Dick used in DT but Lomax has a version in one of his books (I think it's Folksong USA) and there are many. Woody Guthrie also had a version of it. I recorded a minor version many years ago. Which version?
