On a visit to Muncaster castle on the Cumbrian coast, I bought a cassette of the background music used on their audio guide. The cassette was called "Music of the Jacobean Age" and about half the tracks were taken from the first edition of Playford. That was my first introduction to that wonderful collection of tunes.

It was the Coppers singing "Thousands or More" in the "Coppersongs" programme on BBC 4 that turned my boat around; I remember watching it on tape on a clear autumn evening with the curtains open, with the moon climbing through the tree outside as the sky grew dark

That, and John Kelly singing "Spencer the Rover" on his first visit to Chorlton FC. And, most of all, Les (in Chorlton) leading "Ranzo" at the Beech singaround, on my second or third visit (I'd never heard the song before). I've been a full-on traddie ever since.

I `ad that Mick Jagger in my cab one day. I just picked `im up at Lords. `e was looking well pleased with `imself because we `ad just beaten the Aussies in the First Test.
I said," `ere Mick, `ave you seen that Mudcat? They`re asking are there any tunes that made you change direction. `ave you got any?"
`e said , "Yeah, a few of `em, Jim. First was "I LEFT my `eart in San Francisco", then that Bing Crosby one, "STRAIGHT down the middle" and finally, "All RIGHT now"!!

Around 1964 or 5 I went out on payday to by a Bob Dylan Record. They had no left so I bought a Clancy Bros & T Makem record instead. Later headed via the Dubliners and Watersons to E MaColl & AL Lloyd then the High Level Ranters. All important steps

derek brimstone used to tell a tale about Cosmotheka in the back of a taxi in Hong Kong singing a song called Ginger! This confused the taxi driver no end cos in the local lingo Ginger! meant, Turn left!

It wasn't a song that changed things for me, it was a book of music. Namely, 'Elizabethan & Shaekspearean Musicke by the Recorder,' selected and arranged by Claude Simpson.

It got me interested in early music. That, and the pink album.

Alan there are fourteen steps up to my house. We finally bought a harp for friends to play when they come.

Hallo Mo,I remember you being there, sadly we broke up as a band about 15 -20 years ago Keith moved with his job to Holland, Pete started up his woodworking business, Helen went off to do her own thing and I joined GIGCB .( Now with Will Fly )
It was strange being the first, or one of the first French Traditional bands in the UK., we had a job getting the music and the dances accepted.As you know it is very common now. I think we would have been much more popular now than we were then, but that's life.It was good while it lasted and I am still proud of the two records we produced.
I can still remember walking up those steps to our cottage at Whitby halfway up the hillside, counting each one as we walked up them with all the gear. Reminded me of Laurel and Hardy with the Piano.

Inish Oirr, which I first heard in Concarneau. I naturally thought it was french, until I later found out otherwise. It made me change from being song-orientated to working with real musicians!

There are some tunes that rarely come along but can make you change direction.This tune "The Fubu Waltz" I heard at the "Ris Oranges" Folk Festival nr Paris many years ago at about 3 AM and I so loved it, as did other members of our band and not long afterwards we formed the group "Rosbif" and we started playing Traditional French Dance Music.
It was then played by two Hurdy Gurdy's, here it is played on a Jeffries Anglo Concertina.
