The local council would like to revive the Walton festival! Any ideas out there?

Do you have any real ale / camra pubs suitable for sessions?

Would it be best slightly off the peak season, as less likely to clash with the candyfloss and lager tourists?

Some kind of complimentary focus both on 'new' and 'old' Walton might be good:
Presently, do you have any folk-friendly bands within the local area?
Looking back, what 'folk traditions' are associated to Walton? (eg: would a chanty session / workshop be fitting?)

Contact and get local traders on board to help fund?

A display of photographs, or images from local artists, celebrating Walton's 'folk art' in the town hall? Bound to be a shed load of it there.

'Fish and chips' plus music somewhere. I don't quite know what I'm aiming at here..

Two local folk based bands you could talk to:
http://www.onionband.com/
http://www.waltonwebs.co.uk/dna/

This pub which offers real ale and live music might be worth talking to:

Something of an out-there tangent this, but would it be worth considering a session or display of some kind exploring traditional type music from the various immigrant communities too?

I'm aware that there is quite a lot of sympathy for the BNP in Walton, as such a folk festival might possibly represent an opportunity for some valuable cultural & community exchange?

If you thought it worthwhile to explore the idea - without 'politicising' the event - you could consider seeking further advice from the team at Folk Against Facism:

alternatively the festival could have a theme, walton on the naze maritime , or walton the naze free reed[accordion concertinas harmonicas] festival, walton on the naze banjo festival, which could include old timey, bluegrass, irish tenor banjo, classical banjo.
walton on the naze folk and roots, or walton international folk song and dance.

"walton international folk song and dance."

Hate to suggest it (as I might attract rebuttals), but you might even be more likely to get some kind of grant to assist in the funding for such an idea.

I do not know where your facts come from "lively" and completely irrelevant to the subject under discussion. I would have thought that with Maggie Thatcher being born about a mile away at Frinton it would be more of a Conservative area.

Frinton is a somewhat different place to Walton, I know them both quite well.

My "facts" for what they are (or are not) worth, came from a news article some months ago, in which the BNP did very nicely in drumming up interest there.

It is irrelevant, if the OP considers it to be so - as indeed is their perogative. I intended no offence, and I have no inclination to continue this tangent further.

Sounds like your wife's parents 'upgraded', as did my own family. Frinton is quite a classic old Tory area, though the beach is lovely. You certainly won't find groups of skins wandering about there as in Walton: diligent citizens would be contacting the neighbourhood watch sharpish if so! In Frinton, the baldness is not by choice rather than a consequence of the age of the demographic ;-)

Lovely to hear from you John, that was the response I was hoping for, The Mayor came to see me to see if Bill and I would consider a revival, we ran for 17 very sucessful years.
I am hoping that all the old faithful will be in touch and maybe from small beginings????
(off subject, Maggie always visited Frinton to buy her shoes as her sister had a fruit farm a few miles away, and Frinton is actually quite a nice place, lots of young people too, but we like to keep our old grumpy image as we like to keep the place secret so we can enjoy it!! ;-).
Back to the festival, I think the old format would work, a very friendly festival of dance and song,in a very pretty seaside town.

re "walton international folk song and dance"

I work for Essex County Council Heritage and Arts who works in tandem with ECC Cultural Diversity. I can put you in contact someone who can hook you up with Polish, Asian and African dance and music groups. He worked with Colchester last year on a Cultural Diversity festival held in Colchester Castle Gardens. It was very successful. They had bhangra dance lessons, drumming, tai chi, Morris, and song performances from local choral groups and individuals and some poetry reading.

Arts Development Team might suggest some recently formed community choirs and dance troupes. They certainly may be able to help direct you toward funding.

As for myself, I really like Morris and trad English song, but I am defo not a supporter of BNP. It is just my taste and that from a Southern Yank (what a contradiction in terms).

If not an international festival, perhaps one with a historical theme.

http://www.walton-on-the-naze.com/History/history.htm#Walton's Victorian Heyday

Could play on the whole seaside resort in Victorian times. Work with local schools to provide, artwork and performances. There are Victorian Societies who dress in period clothes and visit places as they do the Dickens festivals in Rochester. I am certain Essex Record Office has a wealth of material to feed into this and might do an exhibition of documents and photographs at the record office to help promote your festival. There may also be funding for going the heritage angle.

Once all is sussed I can add festival info to Essex Explore Culture website. Free promotion of the event. Wahey!

We were on with the Onion Band last year, a bit chalk and cheese, I couldn't see anyone turning up to see us liking Onion Band stuff and vica versa, awesome PA though (we didn't use amplification!) It happened twice last year, we preceeded a band called Happy Cats who were very good but not an ideal mixture. This year we haven't had anything like it. In Malton and York we preceeded a girl duo "Two" who are very very good and although do contempory self penned stuff not a million miles from our audience and sat quite well in the schedule. I suppose its about bums on seats again!

He has said maybe he could put a folk weekend on there at the same time as Walton, then the artists could swop over rather like the V Festival does.
Meanwhile hope to see you all on September 25th this year, I hope Christopher will join us so we can have some real brainstorming as well as singing and eating and drinking?

We're never going to find a date that is both appropriate for, and beneficial to the Town (it is the council who have suggested running it) and which doesn't clash with some other event. There are folk events every single weekend. Oh, hang on, I think I've spotted a vacant slot. Around the fourth weekend in December!

It used to be the weekend after the schools go back to add an extra weekend onto the summer for the local traders, also after the holiday makers have gone leaving the town free and ready for the folkies. Also the Festival started in 1986 and there were not any clashes that we knew of!
Looking forward to our get together on Sept 25th ( marquee goes up on the Friday evening....any helpers?)

There are folk events every single weekend.

That may be true nationally or internationally - but not in this particular corner of the world. And folk music is perhaps at its best when it is locally made and locally supported.

Thanks Banjoman, I will put that on the list of "to do" tomorrow, that is why we are getting together to swop ideas, I am getting all the old programmes out of the attic, and old photos , to stir the memories of who was there!!

Thanks to everyone who came to the concert on Sunday, we certainly saw some faces that we had not seen for years! And some good ground work for next year was forthcoming.
Special thanks to Terry, hope the evening was worth the horrendous drive from London, A huge thank you to My Sweet Patootie who were fantastic, if you can catch them before they go back to Canada next week go see them!

Hi! We are involved in organising a festival in Walton-on-the-Naze in September 2024. It’s called Between the Tides Walton Art Festival. This is the link to our website waltonartsfestival.com . It’s not only a folk festival but follows in the footsteps of the past festivals held in Walton. We are planning an exhibition about the Walton folk festival and there will be local folk bands, shanty workshops and singers from local choirs during the weekend. This is our pilot year for the festival and we are just testing out ideas. We have been reading through all of these comments and are taking them all on board! If you have any more ideas please feel free to email us at info@waltonartsfestival.com?From Eleanor and Phoebe at The Nose Bookshop
