Subject: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Fred McCormick Date: 12 Jun 11 - 05:51 AM Rumour has reached my ears that the Whitetop Mountaineers, part of the Whitetop Mountain Band are touring the UK in the Autumn. Unfortunately, there's nothing about it on their website. Does anyone have any information? Many anticipatory thanks. |

Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: BanjoRay Date: 12 Jun 11 - 06:45 AM The link I used was www.sweetsunnysouth.co.uk , which the mudcat link maker then proceeded to ruin by adding a www.mudcat.org in front of it. This happens frequently. grumble whinge complain..... Ray |

Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Maryrrf Date: 12 Jun 11 - 09:28 AM I'm sure they'll put the schedule up soon. We've had them at our concert series in Richmond, Virginia and not only are they fabulous musicians - they're unquestionably "the real thing". They come from Grayson County, Virginia, and Martha's family has been musical royalty in that area for generations. She's related to a reknown fiddle maker, Albert Hash, and her dad also makes instruments. Jackson, her partner, has learned the craft from Martha's dad. They are as warm and genuine as you can get - you'll love them and their music! Be sure and make it a point to see them. Oh and Martha is sure to demonstrate some old time Appalachian clogging. |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Leadfingers Date: 12 Jun 11 - 10:34 AM I saw The Band in Willamsburg (With Maryrrf) a couple of years back - Fine musicians and damn nice people ! Hopefully I will catch them on this tour ! |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Fred McCormick Date: 12 Jun 11 - 11:38 AM Shucks. From the dates posted above, it looks as if the tour is going to be confined to the south of England. Rats. Shucks. What about us folk up north. Well, I am off to see Sara grey, Kieran Means and Ben Paley, and then Jeff Warner tomorrow. So I'd better not complain too loudly. |

Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Fred McCormick Date: 13 Jun 11 - 09:54 AM Don't forget they're Americans, so long distance travel probably wouldn't be much of a problem to them. As I feared, it's all down south and nothing up north. Does anyone now where the Chapel, Wales, referred to above, is. |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: nickp Date: 13 Jun 11 - 10:32 AM Fred, it's at the far end of Pembroke so no help to you. |

Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: nickp Date: 13 Jun 11 - 10:53 AM Sept. 15- Islington Folk Club London - venue details as per The Horseshoe (which is it's 'home'. Square and Compass is - I assume - at Worth Matravers, near Swanage Melting Pot... could be several... possibly Southampton... or Redruth. Is that St Ives, Cornwall or Cambridge? Kentfolk appears to ge a general website not necessarily a venue. Any more ideas folks? |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: GUEST Date: 13 Jun 11 - 02:51 PM Yeah come on over to Virginia and see them on their home turf! |

Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Fred McCormick Date: 14 Jun 11 - 05:42 AM Nickp. I guess you're right. But anyone who can get down that way should clock what else is coming up there. Friday 14th October 2011 - Beverly Smith and Alice Gerrard - Alice Gerrard is a legendary performer, having appeared with many of the great names in bluegrass music. She is joined by guitarist and fiddle player Beverly Smith. £7.50 Thursday 27th October 2011 - Catfish Keith - Deep delta blues and American roots music from one of the top acoustic bluesmen in America. £7.50 Thursday 17th November 2011 - Appalachian Roots - Old time music and dance variety show featuring fiddle, banjo, flatfooting, buckdancing and a dose of mountain preaching from Riley Baugus and Ira Bernstein. £10.00. Guess I'll just have to move to South Wales |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: nickp Date: 14 Jun 11 - 06:22 AM Fred, from your comments I have a suspicion you are generally in a Liverpool direction, so these dates may be of interest (if not too far away): Beverly & Alice - October 23, Bothy Folk Club, Southport Debby McClatchy - Oct 2, Ring O Bells Folk Club, Warrington And Ira and Riley will be at the Gainsborough Old Time Festival next February (subject to contract). Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Fred McCormick Date: 14 Jun 11 - 08:01 AM Nickp. You got it bang in one. Thanks for the tip off. |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: Maryrrf Date: 14 Jun 11 - 10:08 AM If you like the Whitetop Mountaineers, you may also like Jeni and Billy . Jeni was raised in a coal mining community in Appalachia, and her songs reflect this. They're doing a summer tour of the UK too. |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 14 Jun 11 - 04:59 PM Thanks Maryrrf, I took a listen but find that their style is completely different to that of the White Top Mountaineers. Musical ok but far less interesting, they come across more like 1960's folkies. Fine if you like that approach but it ain't for me. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Whitetop Mountaineers UK tour From: nickp Date: 22 Jun 11 - 04:19 AM Sept. 23- Dorset Community Center mentioned above... is the Dorchester Arts Centre and will also feature Stompin' Dave Allen |
