Just received an email from Rosemary Tawney and thought it was worth posting on here for people who haven't seen it.

I have good news for those who have been hoping for Cyril's Argo LPs to
become available on CD. Talking Elephant have just issued one of them.
It's available from all the usual online sources, specialist folk music
suppliers and at many festivals, as well as direct from Talking Elephant
http://www.talkingelephant.co.uk/ and from me via Cyril's website. Click
http://www.cyriltawney.co.uk/record.htm HERE for full track listing.

Happy listening and best wishes to you all

Rosemary Tawney

CYRIL TAWNEY

"A Mayflower Garland" available again after 30 years

"A collection of folk songs from Devon and Cornwall offered as a tribute on
the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower".

Cyril Tawney's 1970 album A Mayflower Garland is now on sale as a CD
(Talking Elephant TSCD 176), having been unavailable for copyright reasons
for over 30 years, as have many other gems from the Argo folk catalogue.
The LP was produced to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the sailing of
the Pilgrim Fathers from Plymouth to America and consists of a selection of
12 Devon and Cornwall songs including three of Cyril's own (most notably a
superb version of The Oggie Man), three-quarters of which have never before
been issued on a Tawney CD. Other standout tracks are his definitive
rendering of The Bell-ringing, Outward Bound, Sir Francis Drake and Rounding
the Horn. There are five short extracts from contemporary historical
documents read by Gary Watson, and Cyril is accompanied by Reg Hall
(melodeon) and Tom Paley (banjo and plectrum guitar).

delighted to hear this - too many of our inspirational writers and singers have their work bound up in copyright issues.

I got my copy directly from Talking Elephant about a week ago, together with Peter Bellamy's Merlin's Isle of Gramarye. But it's also available from the usual stores like Amazon.

Now if only they'd release "In Port". I've been trying to get hold of that for years. Although the individual songs are all available on other albums (as Rosemary Tawney points out on the website), it is these particular versions that are important to me (for sentimental reasons as much as anything). I even bought a copy of the vinyl L.P. through eBay, but as I no longer have a turntable.....

There are CDs available from of live recordings of gigs and a CD of one of his LPs, and a book about him too.
Some of the 'new' CDs are rearranged, more into type of subject, but look on the C.T. website to see what I mean.
Cyril was a collector, transmitter, and writer, and I wonder if any 'traditional' type of singer of today doesn't include at least one of C.T's. songs in his repertoire.

This is nothing to do with me, unless some fragments that I once recorded have been spiced in. I just happen to be on Rosemary Tawney's mailing list. Do go to the website for a look.
    Threads combined. -Joe Offer-

I have to 2-CD compilation that was out a couple years ago. Emily Friedman, of Chicago, gave it to me as a gift---and it is wonderful.

Don Stevens---How the hell are you?? I know it's been a tough go. Give me a note at folkart@ivnet.com I hope you and Barbara are as good as we can be at our age.

All the best,
Art

Amazon UK lists a Talking Elephant CD reissue of "Cyril Tawney Sings Children's Songs from Devon and Cornwall" (originally Argo ZFB 4, 1970) with a release date of August 22. There is no information on the Talking Elephant website yet.

The link listed here for Cyril's website now connects to a kitchen designer in London.

Does anyone know if Rosemary Tawney is still with us?

This message implies that she had email as of 2011. Does she still get email?
I would like to contact her to pay her royalties and for permission to record one of Cyril's songs.
