Subject: What news on the Getaway?
From: Dani

What's the good word? Will there be room for those of us on the waiting list for the Getaway? We'll be daytrippers if we have to, but the suspense is killing me! How is the planning going and how much bread and peanut butter do I need to bring?

I've checked with the registrar. Everyone who is on the waiting list is in. The deadline for preference for FSGW members has expired. There is even still room for another couple of dozen. (Though applications are still coming in, so don't procrastinate if you want to come and haven't sent in your application.)

Nobody needs to bring peanut butter and bread (unless you LIKE peanut butter and bread so much you feel you need your own private stash--but there's usually peanut butter and bread AND jelly out on the food table at almost all times.)

If anyone is not on the meal plan because they have a special diet they don't think can be accommodated, well and good. But anyone who has subscribed to Debby McClatchy's catering will not be disappointed. There is food for all.

Climate update: storms Dennis and Floyd have filled our streams but not to the point of serious flooding. The drought is over (or at least stayed). We've had the first few nippy nights of Fall (lows into the 40s). As time gets closer, I'll try to post an update on weather.

ummm...important notice...the peanut butter which Debbie puts outis almost ALWAYS smooth only...*sigh*..(kids, you know..)..so those crunchy fans, like me, may well decide to bring your own...(though, as Charlie says, you wont be hungry)

Hi Charlie,

I just sent out, via snail mail, my application along with a check. I hope I can get in. We requested to be at a cabin for one night only (Saturday). We would come early Sat. morning and stay till as late as possible on Sunday.

I wasn't procrastinating, just low on funds for awhile. I hope we make it, if not, we'll do a day trip.

Love, annap

Note to anyone else in annap's "low-on-funds" situation: If you go to the site and download the registration form (www.fsgw.org/getreg.htm), you'll discover that you need to send in a deposit, but that full payment isn't due until October 1st. While October 1st isn't all that far off; it's still a week away. But get your registration forms sent in pronto!

Getaway question.

Friday night's supper is "covered dish". Are there facilities for re-heating a dish? I don't have far to come, but I probably will prepare a dish that is chilled, but could be reheated. I won't be able to keep a dish warm during my travels.

If there is no reheating available, then I guess I'll fix a cold dish.

RIB ... thanks for bringing up the reheating question. Will we be able to reheat a dish? Since I'm traveling from Tallahassee, don't exactly what I'll bring, obviously something that will travel well, but "reheating" might be important. Times getting short (especially since I have a business trip to Massachusetts this week and won't be home until next Sunday and will take off for the Getaway 4 days later) and I'm getting excited ... moonchild

The kitchen off the dining hall will be accessible--it's got one big oven and lots of stovetop burners. No microwave (as of May '99). But lots of folks bring cold things--in fact, at the place where we were for the past 17 years, there WEREN'T facility for reheating.

Some folks stop off at Kentucky Fried Chicken and buy a bucket'o'chicken, (or some other carryout place). Other folks make real food, but be aware of the shortcuts, especailly if you're an out-of-towner.

Anyone who hasn't received an e-mail confirmation in the past week--our registrar has been out of town for the past week and just returned home Sunday night. She'll need at least a couple of days to catch up with life. I'll check for you, Big Mick.

Does the Getaway have any policy about the use of personal taperecorders? Is it ok? Or do most people object. I'm referring to just taping for personal use only.

Thanks, karen k

Anyone who contributes food is welcome to the pot-luck on Friday night. It's an unusual pot-luck in that people arrive sometime over the course of 5 or 6 hours, and as they do, their contributions go onto the table--so what's available to eat changes over the course of the evening. Folks arriving late-ish might want to think in terms of desserts.

I should mention that since the kitchen at the old place (Camp Letts) wasn't opened until fairly late on Friday, folks at the FSGW are in the habit of not bringing things that need warming up on-site. The idea of warming food is so novel that only people who read this thread will know of it.

Karen K - lots of people bring tape recorders to the Getaway to collect new songs, as the weekend is a glorified song swap in the woods. Just a couple etiquette rules to be observed:

1. Be unobtrusive. Since the weekend is a "Live" experience, remember that your recordings will be picking up a lot of background noise, people singing along, etc. Don't expect folks to keep quiet for someone taping in the background. If there's a song you REALLY want to get a clean copy of, singers are usually happy to sing it again for you one on one later in a quieter setting.

2. If it's folk doing a mini-concert (as opposed to a song-swap or workshop), ask them in advance if they mind you taping their concert. Most will be happy to say yes; asking prevents any awkwardness with the few people who DO mind...

I've learned a lot of fun new songs from the Getaway over the years, and have scads of tapes that I've honestly never gone back to listen to - but, of course, will never throw out because I MIGHT want to find something on them, someday...

hmmm...reheating food...since there is this stove, there are 'usually' a few pots of something that are re-heated or finished cooking on Friday night..(since I live close, I often bring something that is still warm, wrapped in layers of towels..but it IS a genuine 'pot luck'...and regulars have learned not to pig out on early stuff, 'cause something new and wonderful may arrive in 30 minutes. I have seen 5 or 6 'hot' dishes set out at once..and there are some truly creative cold dishes! There has been smoked salmon, wonderful bread & cheese combos, amazing salads, etc. I am a picky eater, and I have always found something tempting...The 'serious' time is between 6-8, of course, but those who arrive and are hungry at 9 will find something too...As Charlie says, plan your food by when you expect to arrive...and DO remember to clean up whut you brung before going to bed so it ain't a total mess when Debbie starts breakfast.

Thanks for the reply about taping. Your answer is what I expected. Your suggestions/reminders are 2nd nature to me after 35 (at least) years of going to coffeehouses/festivals, etc. Never hurts to be reminded though and certainly helpful for 1st timers. Thanks again,

OK, I finally got myself squared away and I am definitely coming--but only as a daytripper on Saturday. Lots of you nice folks have offered to pick me up at the Metro or somewhere in the morning, and I will be taking somebody up on that for sure.

BUT I need to get back to the Metro at night. One of you who has been there before, is there a phone at the camp that I could use to call a Virginia cab to get me back to the Metro or is it too remote? I think that would be easiest, because I don't want to drag anybody away from the festivities to take me back in the evening, especially since I'm already going to be bugging someone in the morning.

BTW, is there an agenda posted anywhere with time frames? Or if not, what time should I plan on showing up, and is the Celtic music workshop on Saturday or Sunday?

Thanks!

Coffee mugs: It is a tradition at the Getaways to bring your own coffee mug, which saves some of the trash by not taking several paper cups each day. Mugs also work better and hold more. It is not mandatory - there will be cups, but you might want to consider it.

'detailed' agenda with time slots is in final stages...we'll see what we can do the next few days...you'll have time to think about it.

(and yep...a plastic mug of your own that you can identify sure helps..especially for kids... and if it has a lid..and you can carry it to other buildings easier){I'm afraid I'm guilty of overkill, but I love having exactly the right cup/mug/thermos etc...)

Wah Wah Wah!!! stamp feet Wah Wah Wah!!!

Here I actually live in D.C. and am a member of FSGW and I can't go.

I've been directed to give a talk at the American Public Transit Association in Orlando on the 10th. Have to leave on the 9th! Can't get out of it.

This was THE Year that I was going to go to a Getaway too!

The forces conspire against me! ARGHH!

Seriously: I hope everyone has a wonderful time and tells us all about it here. If you can tape some of the sessions, or record them using one of those minidisk thingies I'm sure we would all love to listen to them via Mudcat Radio! (Especially the shanty sings) Hint, hint hint.

Dick Greenhaus was recording sessions on one of those minidisk thingies at the Champlain Valley Festival, so chances are good he'll have it at the Getaway too. Chances are there'll be lots of pix taken as well -- maybe we'll arrange a group picture of all 'Catters in attendance like we did when Rick Fielding came to D.C. for a concert. (It's posted under lamarca's name in bbc's photo gallery.) Now all we have to do is pray for the kind of crystal-clear fall weather that's possible around here at this time of year. Last few days have been gray, muggy, and rainy, so maybe the weather gods/goddesses will get it out of their system and bestow some sparkling fall days to set the stage. Kathy

Did you give a fig?
Or breathe the smog?
Did you play a gig?
Or was it "a gog"?

The problem with these things is that once I get started, I can't stop...

so here's what came to mind after I hit the submit button.

Did you grease the pig
And slop the hog?
Did you dance the jig
And drink the grog?
O Mick the Big
Get off your log
Put on your wig
And go for a jog
Your fingers, I dig,
Are lost in a fog:
Instead of "a gig"
They typed "a gog"

There are a few more one-syllable rhymes, but to use them would have distorted the content. (hmmm--is that some kind of "creep?") anybody else is welcome to them...vig, rig, bog, and cog.

Seriously though, what about those tee shirts? Or will we have mudcat sweatshirts by then??? And what ever happened to the hat idea?

We Virginians have kicked a little extra cash into the coffers, done special ceremonial dances, made burnt offerings and done countless other things to insure that good weather will prevail for the Getaway weekend.

The nights are forecast to be in the high thirties and/or low forties so come prepared to bundle up come nightfall. But the days should be pleasant. PLEASANT??!! Hell, they are going to be terrific!! What?...Oh. Were we still talking about the weather?

Do remember to pack warm clothes--

The cabins are unheated and uninsulated.
The lodges are heated only by the fireplaces and collective body heat.
The dining hall is heated only by the kitchen ovens and collective bodies.
While daytimes will be pleasant--no, perfect!--the nights will send you looking for warm sweaters or coats, and warm sleeping bags.

GENERAL INFORMATION : Jamming and Singing: The dining hall (outside of mealtimes), and most of the unscheduled lodges, are available for jamming and open sings. Ad Hoc Sessions: To lead a session that's not on the schedule, find a blank spot on the Master Schedule (in Dining Hall), write in your workshop, then have it announced at mealtime.
......Sign-up For Vocal Clinic: A sign-up sheet will be posted in the dining hall.

Evening Concerts: Sign-up sheet posted at lunchtime. No more than one song for each individual. If additional space is available, an announcement will be made. People who will be leaving before Sunday concert have priority for Saturday concert.

Quiet Areas: "A" Lodge, for families with kids under 12, and "E" Lodge, for folks who want quiet at night, should not be used for singing after 10 pm. CHECK WITH JENNIFER!!!!! ON A

Crafts table for kids: One table in the dining hall will be set aside for kids' crafts but MUST BE CLEANED OFF at mealtimes. Parents willing to lead an hour of kids' crafts can post the time & craft by the crafts table. Or, just bring materials for the crafts table. Walking and hiking: There is a small lake and stream with waterfall behind the B and C cabin areas.

------ I sent the grid to Dennis and Judy Cook to be put on the FSGW web site. Be patient, though, they're awfully busy and may not be home today. - Rita
