Subject: RE: What is your favorite release of 2011 ? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Nov 11 - 07:59 PM "Steele the Show" - made to celebrate the songs written by the late Davy Steele, with a great line-up of illustrious artists singing the songs. It was released in time for a concert of the same name at January 2011's Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow. To my mind, it was the best show in the whole 3-week-long festival. Highlight of the show was Davy's young son, Jamie taking centre stage in the Fruitmarket - a very large venue, and the whole thing was put together by Davy's wife, Patsy Seddon, an inspirational idea. Thanks to Ian Green of Greentrax for the recording. The album is one of the four nominated for best album of the year in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Awards, which take place in Perth on Dec 3rd, and I sincerely hope it wins. |

Subject: RE: What is your favorite release of 2011 ? From: kendall Date: 18 Nov 11 - 07:38 PM I don't know when it was released but Priscilla Herdman's CD Water Lilly just came into our hands and I just love it. Every song on it is a keeper, and that has never happened to me before. Usually I get one or two on a recording that I like, but this is rare treat to love all of them. |

Subject: RE: What is your favorite release of 2011 ? From: Will Fly Date: 18 Jul 11 - 03:14 PM Just out - "New Midsummer's Day" by (Chris) Bartram, (Neil) Brookes & (Tony) Weatherall. Tunes discovered mainly from Shropshire; songs from the repertoire of Chris Bartram; superb, sensitive singing and great percussion from Chris; equally superb fiddle playing from Neil Brookes; and excellent melodeon playing from Tony Weatherall. Lovely stuff. Worth buying for Chris's rendering of "Lavender Trousers" alone! |
Subject: RE: What is your favorite release of 2011 ? From: SteveMansfield Date: 18 Jul 11 - 03:01 PM For me it's a three way toss up so far between Patrick Bouffard En Trio's Force Mineur (heads down no nonsense Massif Central boogie) The Home Service Live 1986 concert tape (the current punch-up on another thread about recording quality only makes me think that I'd rather have the noticeable cassette wow and flutter on the Home Service recording, than not have the recording at all) and the grace and majesty of June Tabor's Ashore. Probably the Home Service by a short head, just purely because it's less of an unexpected delight to have new stuff from Patrick Bouffard and June Tabor to treasure. |
