I would like to hear from anyone who owns a DegerPipes electronic bagpipe chanter (made in Germany). Am considering buying one but would appreciate some first-hand information before I commit my cash.

Hello Gaz

If you can hold on for a day or so, I'll get the e-mail address to Bill Carr, a piper in the Caledonian Pipe Band here in Oslo. He's a complete nutcase when it comes to gadgets like that. According to another piper friend of mine, he's heard of two different sets of electronic chanters, and has tried one. He says that they're ok for practicing, but that you'll be better off sticking to the accoustic ones for performances.

Meanwhile, keep droning.

Go to Deja News and try a search on chanter or DegerPipes. Also post your inquiry to the newsgroup rec.musicmakers.bagpipe, as this topic has been covered there a number of times.

Another option to consider (as a learning tool) is Rob McNeil's new Bagpipe Music Writer Gold. Aside from its spiffy music notation capabilities the new version also does a great job of playback. With some tweaking (e.g., double dotting notes) you can get the phrasing darn close to the way we pipers play. The program also plays through the sound card, so you can play (your chanter) along with the "pipes" or "shuttle pipes" or "practice chanter"... depending on the desired voice and sound patch.

I make learning tapes of our band tunes in this way... great for playing along with or for listening on a Walkman for memorizing.

I hope you haven't lost faith completely, though O know it's been a while. There's a web site for pipers that you can look into, you'll find it at: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~emachpher/pipes.html (whew!)

Or you can drop me an e-mail and I'll give you the address I mentioned. (I don't know if he wants his address made all that public)

My address is: chrkam@online.no
