Seems I'm going to have to break down and make a site or page or something for promotional purposes or I'll never be a rock star. I'm wondering what people think is the best service to use, e.g., myspace, facebook. I'm not into "networking", and I don't want everyone I've ever exchanged e-mails with to receive a bogus invitation to my site, but I apparently need some place to direct booking agents, pub managers, etc., to hear samples of music and to see cheesecake pikchers. Any recommendations or warnings?

So, actually, I don't know if "Social Networking Site" is what I mean - maybe "Best Promotional Site ... "? (Any mudelves feel like changing the title?)

there was some talk here recently about band camp...a site called bandcamp...i think myspace is a bit out dated...facebook seems good,
also many use reverbnation....good luck and let us know what you find.

Spacebook is dead... They've "improved" it to the point where it's almost unusable.

Go for Facebook.

Last time I checked facebook, which was 4 or 5 months ago IIRC, I found it impossible to read their entire privacy policy without joining. The primary info page was available but links to "full details here" required I sign in. Withholding fundamental information makes for a bad start to any relationship. On the other hand, if you trust them...

I don't trust them in the least - that's why I'm soliciting advice and warnings ...!

Thanks for the comments so far - keep'm coming!

By far the best one I know has to be Facebook, my space is dying. Pretty much every fellow musician I know have a good face book page, venues and promoters too. If you want to get seen then that's the place

Try Reverbnation

More of a musician's promotion site than social networking, but it seems that's what you want...

Gawd - it's so long since I used "Myspace" that I called it "Spacebook" in my previous post - sorry if there was any confusion. On the other hand, there's a business idea for someone clever enough to start it up. :)

Everyone's right about Myspace being dead, unfortunately. It's very ideal to set up a 'Musician' Facebook page as Facebook is what everyone uses to contact each-other. Another good idea, and bear with me on this, is to you have your own website! Free sites like Wordpress, etc. will let you build your own website, which you can make relatively personalised. Or if you've got a bit of money you can have your own website, provided you know someone who can build one or are prepared to learn a bit about web design (My Site This is mine for instance, which I built a few months ago and costs £70 a year to host).

.. The reason it's good to have a website is you can link to everything in one place. So it acts as this central hub for me (for Facebook, Youtube, Album Sales, Email, etc)

Bandcamp is also brilliant. If you want a very easy way for people to hear your music, or buy your albums. You can also tweak your Bandcamp page a lot and make it look personalised.

I'm using Reverbnation and like it. Plus, when I was having log-in problems, a staff person gave me personal assistance, untangling a mildly complicated glitch. No searching through help forums and such. Really very nice.
