Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: GUEST,BBP at work Date: 10 Aug 11 - 07:40 AM True, but the other threads are about the competitions and your appearance there, GSS. So, on a more general note, I'll be there on the Saturday doing my usual stalking of the Duncan McFarlane Band who are appearing at the Marine, CIU Club and the Spa Hotel. Looking forward to a cracking day and a very late night! |

Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: nutty Date: 18 Aug 11 - 12:28 AM I loved this years festival - the best for many years in my opinion. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: The Sandman Date: 18 Aug 11 - 12:51 PM yes nutty, I had a good session with other musicians in the conservative club, where i took the opportunity, to sing a couple of social comment songs. I am sure Damien Barber would not have approved, but i take the line that it is an opportunity to sing political songs on[imo] enemy territory, whilst taking advantage of their cheap beer. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: Wheatman Date: 18 Aug 11 - 04:30 PM Good to sing without having to undertake a dialect lecture. We found every one friendly and welcoming, I was like stepping back in time 30 years. We managed to hit a balance of concert and song session. Well done to those who put it together. Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: The Sandman Date: 18 Aug 11 - 01:36 PM no, he seems to think that performers should not play in the cons club, I suspect he is a liberal voter., but i do not know for definite i am not a tory or a liberal voter but i see no point in not playing in the cons club. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:20 PM Saltburn seemed busier than last year. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: Tootler Date: 18 Aug 11 - 02:25 PM The Cons club are a good supporter of the festival and there is usually a good session going on in there, so while I may not approve of their politics, I am quite happy to go along and enjoy myself. |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: Joe Nicholson Date: 18 Aug 11 - 06:36 PM I speak as a lifelong labour voter but I have to say that while I have been involved in Folk Music I have always been well recieved in Consertive clubs, particularly at Saltburn and Saddleworth. Sadly I cannot say this for labour clubs which I have always found to be too conservative (small C ). Joe Nicholson |
Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: GUEST,Fantum Date: 18 Aug 11 - 07:11 PM as Pete said above there was a piece in the local paper and there was mention of 380 performers and 1000 visitors. I did wonder about 380 performers perhaps he included every one who sang at the singarounds. I got into a cracking singaround Fri night with the Darlington Mummers and equally enjoyable singarounds on Sat.As for the Conservative Club it was regularly packed out perhaps that shows musics more important to us than political principle. On Sun I ended up in the arts bank for a while and got mugged to do something a real ego boost for me though I did sympathise with the audience who had to endure the performance. still a great weekend for friends and music. Subject: RE: Saltburn-by-the Sea Folk Festival. From: Brian Peters Date: 19 Aug 11 - 11:02 AM I've been going in Glossop Labour club for nearly 30 years now, but many of the local Labour Party members always went to the Con Club because it had snooker tables. The Labour club is the place to go for music, however. Roy Bailey, Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy and Yer 'Umble Servant have all trodden their boards, and there are regular folk sessions. |
