The monthly shanty, forebitier and ballad session will be Saturday, 20 August at The Press Room in Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

While I usually request the attendance of regulars, I'm beginning to look forward to the surprise singers and guests who've been coming by to enliven the sessions.

Looking forward to seeing all of whoever on Saturday - Tom

I missed July, and expect to be there on Saturday. I wonder if I should make sure I still know some songs!

I'll be missing this one unfortunately. Roll & Go has a concert this evening at the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society.

Thanks to Jeri and Charley for bringing this back to the surface, and to Mary for helping to keep it there.

Jeri, you know lots of songs, but like me, you forget what they're caller; make a list.

Charley, have a grand time. If I recall correctly, the W-O Hist. Soc. was where we first saw Roll & Go in concert.

Mary, you have been sorely missed; we really need to see you again.

Fair Winds to all - Tom

Note to JCs- this previous message was posted less than five minutes ago, but purports to be a day old, and did not rise to the top.

I'll be in Cooperstown, NY the rest of this weekend, to see my friends & family, who are in that area for a rare get-together.

Ditto to Charley's message!

See you in September,

Marty Stock

Hope you got a reasonable turnout. Our audience was incredibly thin but they got a quality show.

Our next Roll & Go concert is even closer to Portsmouth, in Ogunquit at the Barn Gallery, Sunday, September 18, 8 pm: see www.rollandgoseasongs.com for more details.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

We had a small but dedicated crew, myself, Linn, Mark Ryer, Chris Madden, Jeri, Justine, and Don Hale. This smaller gathering allowed for greater discussion of songs, telling of jokes, and talking about those of you who weren't there.

The next session will be on Saturday, 17 Sept., the day before Roll & Go is in Ogunquit, and on that same weekend there will be a "Pirate Festival" in Kittery Point at Fort McClary with "The Dogwatch" performing at 1:00.

And by the following weekend we should all be primed and ready for    The Portsmouth Maririme Folk Festival.
The list of performers is cmplete and the new schedule should be up by Labor Day - Tom

Small but lovely session -- several people commented on how nice it was to be able to discuss the songs and their histories, etc. during the session.

Participants -- singers as well as listeners -- included Tom Hall (Curmudgeon), Linn Schulz (Bat Goddess), Chris Maden, Mark Ryer and Keven Seufert (listener), Jeri, Don Hale, Dave & Ellen Hamil (listening), Steve Smith (listening), Justine Donovan, and Bob Frost.

I'll post the song list after I get home from work tonight.

Linn

Here's the playlist --

1. The Girl I Left Behind Me (instrumental) – led by Tom Hall, concertina
2. The Dutchman – Mark Ryer
3. Sailor's Prayer – Linn Schulz
4. Farewell to Tarwathe – Don Hale
5. Hourra les filles – Chris Maden
6. Fire Marengo – Jeri
7. Home, Dearie, Home – Linn
8. Ambletown – Chris
9. Once I Had a Sweetheart – Mark Ryer

(medley of first verses ranging from "I'm Being Eaten By a Boa Constrictor" and Shel Silverstein songs, to "Ain't Gonna Buy No Exxon Gas" by a mother-daughter duo from Chicago.)

10. Henry Martin – Chris
11. Haul, Boys, Haul – Don
12. Shanty In Old Shanty Town (Jerry Bryant) – Linn
13. Mollymauk – Jeri
14. Race of Long Ago – Linn
15. The Mermaid (different tune) – Mark
16. Haul Away, Joe – Chris
17. Oh, Reilly, Oh, Man – Justine Donovan
18. Rolling Down to Old Maui – Mark
19. Farewell and Adieu – Don (the British version but not the minor tune)
20. Three Score and Ten – Linn
21. Clear Away the Morning – Mark
22. Weldon – Chris
23. Chording On An Anglo (parody) – Jeri
24. Hard Times In Old Virginia – Justine
25. Bonnie Barque the Bergen – Mark
26. Grey Funnel Line – Linn & Jeri (with help from the wrong words)
27. Fiddler's Green – Chris

At this point, Bob Frost said he'd join in on the rum verses…

28. Gin Was Mother's Ruin – Linn (yes, there's a rum verse)
29. The Nurse Pinched the Baby – Jeri (and Linn) – (close, but no rum)
30. S-A-V-E-D – Linn ("but he voted R-U-M")
31. Pearls In Her Pants – Mark (I forgot to notice if there was rum in this…)
32. Jamie Louston – Justine (Yeah, I think rum was mentioned…)
33. Sloop John A (parody) – Linn (sorry, no rum)
34. Jamestown Homeward Bound – Don
35. The Jeannie C. – Mark
36. Johnny Come Down to Hilo – Justine
37. Cannery Shed – Linn
38. Noah Built the Ark (Sitting On the River On the Levee) – Chris
39. Peggin' Awl – Justine

Sudden invasion of The Press Room by NH Young Republicans and Ron Paul supporters after lobster bake and straw poll at Rye Harbor State Park...very strange. This is not a hotbed of political conservatism.

40. The Man Who Waters the Workers' Beer – Linn
41. Put It On the Ground – Linn
42. By and By – guy wearing a Ron Paul t-shirt
43. Farewell to Whisky – Tom on concertina; Mark, guitar; Chris, concertina
44. Hanging Johnny – Chris
45. Tommy's Gone to Hilo – Mark (including Tom walking Linn to the car verse)
46. Heave Away, Me Johnny – Don
47. Nelson's Prayer - Mark

dotzit...

Linn-

Wow! Thanks.

I think you had much more fun than we did.

"Pearls In Her Pants"

I'll request that Mark sing that one again.

"Peggin' Awl" is "Peg and Awl"

"Jamie Louston" is "Davy Lowston" (I believe)
...That's the one I think I remember. The "Jamie" one goes
"My name is Jamie Lawson I did seal, I did seal
My name is Jamie Lawson I did seal
I installed a sink last week
And so it wouldn't leak,
I did seal, I did seal, I did seal

While this isn't a hotbed of political conservatism, it IS a hotbed of lobster.

from Ice Bergman's "Severnth Seal"

The 21st century version

....Oh, my name is Davy Lowston, I did seal
I'd club babies while they'd squeal
Never mind the GreenPeace spiel
No big deal
No big deal
Hey, get real!

The 1950's version

Day-veeeee,, Davy Lowston
Killin' the wild Fur Seal

Hope my seals meet your approval.....

Sorry about "Peg and Awl"...I knew that. Unfortunately my twisted and distracted brain temporarily confused it (for no good reason other than the similarity of titles) with A.L. Lloyd's "Long Pegging Awl" which is an ENTIRELY different song...

Alas, the naughty part of my mind often drifts into lyrica erotica...

Linn, under the heading of many versions, many titles, I learned #46 on the playlist as "All Bound To Go", from a Danny Spooner recording. Apparently either title is used for this version. Another variation I heard (Clancy Bros. & Tommy Makem, as well @ the Press Room), was called "Heave Away My Johnny. My education continues......

"My education continues...... "

Especially in this group!

One of the joys of a smaller session (as well as the quieter times before sessions) is that the songs can be discussed in detail -- verse and tune variations, sources, etcet etcet. Always enjoy it.
