It's an Uncle Dave Recording that I think you are looking for. The title I know it as is "Hold the Woodpile Down".

The chorus of the one I am thinking of goes:

Travelin', travelin'
As long as the world goes round
Making backyard 'shine on the Georgia line.
Hold the woodpile down.

Hi Harpgirl, if it's the sea shanty "Roll The Woodpile Down" Johnny Collins does a real nice job of it on his "Shanties & Songs Of The Seas" CD. Another real nice job on it is on "American Sea Chanteys" CD from Mystic Seaport, this CD, for American shanties, is IMHO, is gotta be the best out in quite a number of years. Barry

I may be able to find the lyrics when I get back to work. Can't remember which of Uncle Dave's recordings has the song. The Copernic search engine has been useful to me in locating recordings of songs by title.

And Helen Schneyer sings a dy-no-mite version of the sea chanty on a Folk Legacy recording. I sing it, not as well. I may have to go back and reinstall Mediaring. I took it off because it 1. took a long time to install at boot up, and 2. it took over some of my wav files and made them sound at random times.
Blessings
Barbara

The Uncle Dave version of 'Hold the Woodpile Down' is on Uncle Dave Macon 'Go Long Mule' County CD 3505 - a glorious CD that should be in the possession of any lover of American folk. When will a box set of the output of this American icon be made available to lovers of his muscic - box sets of so many of the less deserving clog the record racks.

If you get a V-mail from an anonymous person, or somebody listed as "djiryl" who has a fairly icky voice, that was me.

The Helen Schneyer acapella version is available at Folk Legacy as a custom cassete "Ballads, Broadsides and Hymns," but I'd check with Sandy first.

Interestingly, (30 years ago)this tune was also done by Jerry Garcia of Greatful Dead fame. (He was a very accomplished banjo player that turned his talents to the more lucrative guitar.)

I will try to work it out for you.

Barry, do you have some verses?

Garg, you owe me a version of this song from Jerry Garcia. Get with it, man!

...charming, Mark! I didn't realize you had written it! Nathan especially likes it. He's in a bowling tournament today. Maybe I'll embarass him by singing it to his doubles partner!

...I've been singing this song and thinking about it as I sing and I definitely believe it originated as I know it, as a riverboat shanty sung by blackmen stoking steamboat fires....

i don't think a sea shanty like this needs a guitar?

ROLL THE WOODPILE DOWN

Way down south where the cocks do crow
'Way down in Florida
The gals all dance to the old banjo
And we'll roll the woodpile down!

Rollin'! Rollin'! Rollin' the whole world 'round
That brown girl o' mine's down the Georgia Line
And we'll roll the woodpile down!

When I was a young man in me prime
I'd take them yaller gals two at a time.

We'll roll him high and we'll roll him low
We'll heave him up and away we'll go.

Oh rouse and bust 'er is the cry
A black man's wage is never high.

O Curly goes on the old ran-tan
O Curly's just a down-east man.

O one more heave and that will do
We're the bullies for to kick 'er through.

I agree Abuwood. I am using banjo because it IS a banjo kind of tune...

Thanks, Mark, for including my folk-processing of your parody of Roll the Woodpile Down. That's a high complement from a master songsmith!

I agree with Alison - if it's a shanty (and although I think Hugill has it I'm not convinced) then it certainly would have been unaccompanied originally.

How anyone sings it is their business however! (and whether I like it is mine!!) :-)
