I don't know about Macs, but on a general point - if you can use a 'print to pdf' or 'export to pdf' function from the application, use that. The quality and size of pdf created from scans are related - large files for good quality - and almost all create pdfs of images.

I have a presentation certificate which gives a print pdf of 170KB and a scanned pdf of 1.3MB

OK, thanks for both those tips, much appreciated. I'll certainly check out the scanner - maybe if I used it more I'd have known! I know there is a "save as pdf" option for Word docs, under print. I guess most of the pdf convertors are for pdf back to an amendable format.

If you're using a modern Mac - OS X 10...., then most applications will allow you to print - and the print options automatically include a PDF save. I do this with my Harmony Assistant scores. Select "Print" and then, when the Print menu appears, select PDF.

Could anyone recommend a good piece of software (pref free or shareware) that enables you to create PDF files? If I scan / download music scores I'd like to turn them into PDF to enable me to read them on a Kindle.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
