Subject: Review: Phien O'Phien - Hum Hum
From: GUEST,Autonomy
Date: 04 Oct 11 - 12:24 PM

The track Hum Hum Hum is the first track to be released for public hearing by Phien O'Phien, a singer of the Irish traveller community. His songs are heartfelt and real portraits of the experience of being an Irish traveller in modern society, along with others which cover more traditional times. Persecution has always been the lot of Irish travellers, and just so it was for the Celts destroyed as they were by the Roman empire - many folk songs indeed deal with this issue such as 'Only Our Rivers Run Free' and so on, older ones as well but my memory's bad.

Check out the track Hum Hum Hum, about the Dale Farm eviction situation, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIIptoRzQaw

It has always been a source of wonder to me that a group of people who call themselves travellers wish to stay in one place.

Ivan, there comes a time when people just want to settle down.

I imagine that given their druthers and adequate roads and fewer obstacles that many would prefer to keep traveling. I think it is in some of our DNA to want to travel and move..mg

I agree with MG, for once. The major obstacle to travellers travelling is the absence of legal stopping places.

I'm thinking this is a music thread.
If it's not a music thread an should be moved, I'm thinking it doesn't need to exist.
I'm also thinking people should use one consistent identity or risk having all their stuff deleted.

It's a brilliant song. We really need people who express the feelings of this beleaguered community, and to delete the thread would be like deleting Civil Rights songs back in 1962.

As Travellers we dont have many computers and so one will be used by many or their non trav friends to send messages. i think that is what has happened here and hasn't been understood by the mods...Can i ask that the review of Phien O'Phien be revised as it has been deleted because of no fault of his. We didn't know you couldn't use the same email address or use the same person (non trav) to send the messages.

It is a good song in a good cause, and I'd like to hear more from Phien O'Phien. If people want to make political points about Dale Farm, rather than comment on the song, then please would they use the BS section below.

The other thread was NOT deleted. It was combined with this one.

I was reading both threads and no review was deleted.

I am just a guy, not an elf.

It seems that a troll got a few posts in and those posts were deleted.

The music section is not a place for political dog fights. It's a place to discuss music.

If four of you are using the same computer and you're all guests the best way to participate in a conversation (so we all know who we're talking to) is for each of you to adopt and consistently use your own monikers, such as your name "Red John."

I don't remember seeing the post you mentioned, I may not have gotten to it if threads moved around. Here is a cut and paste of the review in question from the site linked above:

Phien O'Phien is a long time activist on behalf of the Irish traveller community. He has for some time been writing folk songs about the experience of Irish travellers, Hum Hum Hum being one of them.

Often the 'traditional' is ignored in activism, even dismissed as 'nationalist' or whatever. However it is important for people to preserve their culture from the attacks of the imperialism which makes everything homogenous like the TV. This sort of folk music has not exactly died out in the UK, but much of it has become stale imitation - what makes Phien O'Phien so unique is that he is writing original lyrics about his people and their survival. He has been at Dale Farm since the beginning of Camp Constant, and is working together with the other activists to resist eviction by Constance and Co.

The context (provenance) of the song is an important part of the discussion. But the mud slinging that happens with political discourse isn't needed when recording information about the song.

Thank you Stilly River Sage, That was the review we were talking about, it seemed to have gone awol and wasn't attached to this thread as suggested, never mind, we apologise for any misunderstand re the names.
As Phien has been on here much longer than us (we came on this site after googling Phien lately) we have decided not to post anymore and again apologise for any disruption...Thank you.

I like the song far better than forty foot trailer - But I guess that is all subjective. It seems more 'real' somehow.

How do we pronounce 'an munia tober'? Is it as written? Anyone?

As it is written

Thank you for the compliment...30ft/40ft trailer is a good song but me thinks it spoke to soon...we, the Pavee, are still here...just...no more than 80/100,000 Pavee left in the world.
