Subject: Utah Phillips tribute CD and songbook release tour From: GUEST,Duncan Phillips Date: 09 Oct 11 - 06:51 PM Hello everyone, On Tuesday, November 29th accompanied by a small band of friends I will be driving back East for a five show tour beginning at the Folk Factory in Philadelphia. Why drive? Well for me it's a bit of a pilgrimage but that's long story. We need to be in Philadelphia on Saturday, December the 3rd. There will be four of us and I am hoping to find some folks to host us along the way. If it works out we would be honored to do a house concert or two along the way as well. Here are our show dates; 12/4/2011 - The Folk Factory in Philadelphia, PA. 12/7/2011 - Studio A in Burlington, VT. With Rik Palieri 12/8/2011 - Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. 12/9/2011 - Cafe Lena - Saratoga Springs, NY. 12/10/2011 - The peoples' Voice Cafe in New York, NY. On 12/11 we will head for home so we could use some help with lodging or house concerts on the way back as well. Our route is up in the air, it depends on what we can line up. Traveling with me will be Doug Wintch, Anke Summerhill and Paul Rasmussen. All of which perform on the tribute CD. Paul took guitar lessons from my father in the mid sixties here in Salt lake City at Southeast Music. Dan Schatz will be joining us in Philadelphia. Well I guess that's it for now, any help or suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks, Duncan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour From: Dan Schatz Date: 09 Oct 11 - 07:38 PM It's a real honor to join Duncan and Co. for this tour. (I'll be sorry to miss the pre-Philly house concerts, but such is life.) And Duncan didn't even mention the half of it - we're also celebrating the release of the new Utah Phillips songbook this Fall! Dan |

Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour From: Dan Schatz Date: 09 Oct 11 - 08:08 PM By the way - I don't think I mentioned above - if you don't have a copy of "Long Gone" yet, you don't know half of what you're missing. It has a very different feel from Singing Through the Hard Times, with most of the songs played on Utah's old Guild guitar, and everyone on the CD local to Utah. It all makes for a sense of warmth and community, the sort of CD you'd be comfortable listening to by the wood stove on a cool Autumn evening. Dan |

Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: kendall Date: 14 Oct 11 - 09:30 AM Actually, I plan to be in NC on the 8th. |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 14 Oct 11 - 12:53 PM Sorry to hear it Kendall. If your plans change, let Duncan or me know. Any chance you'll be en route through Philly on the 4th? That Passim gig will be a special one for me - I saw Bruce perform there in 96 or 97. He did two shows that night and I came to the second one. Si Kahn had just done a gig in town earlier that day and we sat together toward the front. It was one of the more memorable concerts I ever attended. What an honor to play there with Duncan and Co. in his memory. Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: kendall Date: 14 Oct 11 - 01:11 PM I'm not driving, I'm flying. Damn, I wish he was coming closer and in a different time frame. I'd love to hear him doing my old friend's stuff. |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Midchuck Date: 14 Oct 11 - 04:22 PM Hmmm. Burlington or Saratoga? Each one's about an hour and a half from me... P. |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: GUEST,kendall Date: 15 Oct 11 - 04:23 PM And nearly 5 hours from us. Winter in this part of the jungle is always iffy. |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 15 Oct 11 - 06:17 PM I know. I'm hoping that the winter stuff stays away while we're cris-crossing New England. The place in Burlington is brand new - a multi-use community space, and just the sort of thing Bruce would have loved. Caffe Lena is, of course, where Bruce got his start, so either way you can soak in the hobo dust.... Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 20 Oct 11 - 11:53 PM Midchuck, in Burlington we'll also be joined by Rik Palieri, a great guy and member of the Rose Tattoo. Dan |

Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 Oct 11 - 12:17 PM I wouldn't be able to join, but Pocatello is only 3 hours from Salt Lake, right? Just e-mail Duncan. Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 05 Nov 11 - 09:26 PM We're starting to do more planning for this tour - at least I am. I hope to see a few Mudcatters along the way! Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 06 Dec 11 - 12:29 AM We had our first show Sunday night at the Folk Factory in Philadelphia - what a treat and an honor to play with these folks. Bruce Phillips always called Utah his home, no matter where he lived in his life, and the Long Gone CD Duncan made does an amazing job of bringing the vibrant musical community of that area together to pay tribute to one of their own. Here's a video about the project. Also, the new 250+ page Starlight on the Rails songbook is now in print, and I've got one! WOW - it's an amazing collection, with transcriptions of some of Bruce's introductions to the songs from his live shows, lots of photos, and way more songs than in the original. It's worth coming to the shows just to get a hand on one of those. Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 06 Dec 11 - 12:32 AM Almost forgot to mention - the Passim show will be live streamed over the web. Not recorded, but live streamed. If you're within 4 hours of Cambridge, MA, come to the show. Otherwise, watch the live stream! (And tell us if you're planning to - kind of cool to know you're out there.) I'll get more detailed info as soon as Duncan gives it to me. Dan |

Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 08 Dec 11 - 01:28 AM Just had a great night in Burlington, VT, joined by Rik Palieri. Good crowd (who came through a snowstorm to hear us), good energy, great music. This is really a sweet project; I hope folks come to see one of the remaining three nights. Dan |
Subject: RE: Utah Phillips tribute CD release tour - 2011 From: Dan Schatz Date: 12 Dec 11 - 12:57 PM Well, the tour's all over and we're back to the real world. What a great time - each show was unique, and each was wonderful. We started in Pennsylvania, with a service at the BuxMont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, which I serve as Minister. I was very happy with the way that service turned out. Bruce Phillips was a UU for 45 years, and the service covered a lot of ground - not just the kind of material we usually hear or talk about. I'm very grateful to Paul and Duncan for donating their time and talent. It felt like a good grounding for everything that was to come. That evening, after picking up Doug and Anke, we performed at the Folk Factory in Philadelphia. It was a sweet performance, and the folks who run the Folk Factory are always a joy to work with. In Burlington, we got to play with Rik Palieri, and stay with him for two nights. There were many stories of the Rose Tattoo - that was a good crowd which came through a snowstorm to be there on a weeknight! At Club Passim we saw a lot of old friends, and Utah's daughter Morrigan came to see the show. That one was special to me because it's the last place I saw Utah perform. For me the hands down highlight of the week was Caffe Lena - you could feel the love from the audience and from the walls. Utah had such a deep connection to that place; it just seemed right for us to be there. We finished up at the People's Voice Cafe in New York, and got a nice turnout despite competing with the Santa pub crawl, which I'm sure pulls in a lot of folkies. The end of that show was especially fun, with ensemble performances of "Ship Gonna Sail" and "Hallelujah I'm a Bum." But for me the best part of this tour was getting to know Duncan better, and Paul Rasmussen, Doug Wintch, Mike Garcia and Anke Summerhill. They are all top notch musicians (Mike does spoken word, but you know what I mean) and wonderful people. We all exchanged CDs, so I get to listen to a lot more of them, too. Thanks to everyone who came out to any of the shows. If you haven't yet picked up a copy of the Long Gone tribute CD, I recommend you do it. It's truly excellent, and there's very little overlap with Singing Through the Hard Times. And if Duncan can ever make back what was spent making it, the proceeds will go to Hospitality House, the homeless shelter in Nevada City Utah helped found. Dan |
