Here's an email I just sent to [e-mail] which gives the arguments against cutting folk as I see it. I urge you to do the same:

I am appalled to hear that the BBC is planning to cut Genevieve Tudor's local folk programme as part of the DGF budget cuts. Much of the musical output that Radio Shropshire offers is no different to what one can hear on any popular national radio station. I was under the impression that the BBC wanted to especially retain in its local broadcasting what is truly local. In cutting Sunday Folk you will be cutting Genevieve's distinctive local guests, local topics of conversation and the local aspect of her play list. Her programme is, in other words, irreplaceable by anything national radio offers which, by any account, has the most paltry amount of folk music as it is. Please stay true to the brief of local radio and keep Genevieve Tudor's Sunday Folk.

And my Sounds of Folk programme is 10 years old next May, so we're planning a special birthday programme.
Our theme tune is Oysterband's Blackwaterside, and the group have agreed to do an interview for the programme. There'll be lots of guests there who've been interviewed over the years, including Strawhead and Stanley Accrington. Can't wait now!

Don't forget Radio Merseyside is intending to axe Geoff Speed's Folk Scene, too...

The buggers seem to think they don't need us folkies - which is probably okay as there are plenty of community radio stations around only too happy to accept our programmes...

Sod the Beeb, Community Radio does what it says on the tin!!

I've said it all before, I know, but Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm has been the home of Ali O'Brien's 'Sounds of Folk' since the Beeb dispensed with our services back in 2007.

We are available online with a 'Listen Again' service that goes back months, not just one measly week!!

BBC Local Radio, eat yer heart out! Oh... you already are doing...!

Don't overlook the fact that it isn't only folk they are ditching, but 'Specialist Music' in general... inverse discrimination against English-speaking members of the public, as they are leaving the 'ethnic minority' programming well alone... but perhaps we now qualify as an 'ethnic minority'??

It's Genevieve Tudor's programme that has been broadcast on the BBC local radio in the Shropshire/Hereford/Worcester etc. areas. It's a shame that there was little vociferous support on that programme when other folk programmes were being axed a few months ago.

This is the most valuable folk music program out there. If it is cut a huge market for music and performance will be lost as well as a great source of archival material and contemporary collection.
