Subject: RE: Lomax songbooks, comparison of content From: Lighter Date: 01 Nov 11 - 09:32 AM The first printing of the 1938 "Cowboy Songs" included "The Strawberry Roan." This was immediately deleted after composer Curley Fletcher asserted his copyright. |
Subject: RE: Lomax songbooks, comparison of content From: Crowhugger Date: 01 Nov 11 - 12:43 AM Joe, thank you for the link to the wonderful traditionalmusic.co.uk! Silly me, I just spent nearly an hour there when I should've been gearing up for NaNoWriMo. Well probably it'll still be there Dec 1st :-) |
Subject: RE: Lomax songbooks, comparison of content From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Oct 11 - 10:30 PM Hi, Jim- Please do post the index to the 1938 edition of "Cowboy Songs." I don't have a copy that recent (mine is 1916), and I thought what I had was missing something. Does yours have music notation? Mine doesn't. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lomax songbooks, comparasion of content From: GUEST Date: 31 Oct 11 - 03:53 AM The revised and enlarged 'Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads' (1938) includes at least four times the number of songs as the original - well worth having. The editors are given as John and Alan Lomax. Will provide an index should it be required Joe. In my opinion (though some are 'of their time') all the Lomax books are worth looking out for. Subject: RE: Lomax songbooks, comparasion of content From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Oct 11 - 01:22 AM Hi, Nartyker- I don't think there's a lot of duplication in the Lomax books. Let's see if I can come up with a Lomax bibliography (with the help of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville):
I suppose I could include Cowboy Songs (John A. Lomax, 1910, 1916) and Songs of the Cattle Trail and Cow Camp (John A. Lomax, 1919, 1947), but I can't find good indexes for them. Land Where the Blues Began could also be included. -Joe- Take a look at http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/ for online copies of some of the Lomax books. |
Subject: Lomax songbooks, comparasion of content From: GUEST,Nartker Date: 30 Oct 11 - 06:30 PM I have a copy of the Lomax's Folk Songs of North America. I have seen listings For Folk Song USA, volumes 1&2. Do the contents of North America very from those of USA enough to warrant the additional purchase? Thanks. Hey Art if your out there, I'm sure you can answer the question. Doug |
