At Sidmouth the other day I heard somebody sing a parody of Gaudete, full of dog latin phrases and with a chorus that started 'Away day....'. Anybody know it?

From: IanC
Date: 10 Aug 01 - 10:54 AM

This is the Kipper Family's "Away Day".

Away day (Gaude te)

We thought we do it cos we've seen that Alastair A Anderson around from that magazine thing. Cos they don't call it folk music any more, its Roots music, We've been very influenced by that, but we've got a bit of a problem, cos to get on really well with the roots music, you got to sing in a foreign language, really, and father & I are a bit stuck in that department, are we.

So we asked our vicar, the vicar of St Just, we asked him what foreign languages he knew, and he said, well there's always Latin. This is what they call a Latin Motel. I don't know why. That's right, a Latin Motel. Course, being in Latin, we don't understand a word of it, but if there are any Latin people in here tonight, and they'd like to tell us what its all about, we'd be pleased, wouldn't we father.

Oh yes

It's an old Latin motel, called Away day

Chorus: Away day, away day, loco in transit
Omnibus, St pancreas, away day
Away day, away day, loco in transit
Omnibus, St pancreas, away day

Cleopatra virginae, terra incognito
In loc parentis, caesar mutlio calcutta

Troyalus et Cressida, con Homo erectus
Strangulated hernia, coitus interruptus

Romulus et Remus, in flagrante delicto
Honi soit qui mal y pense, Harry Belafontee

Gina Lollobrigida, Osteo Arthritis
In vino veritas, Peter Dominicus

Non compos mentis, continuo ad nauseam
Ad lib, et cetera, quod erat demonstrandum

Leading into song: Awayday

SID: We’ll do one more just to finish you off with, then you’d better have a little lie down hadn’t you, father?

HENRY: I think I could do with a little lie down, yes

SID: I’ll see what I can arrange in that department for myself too I think!

SID: We thought we do it cos we’ve seen that Alastair A Anderson around from that magazine thing. Cos they don’t call it folk music any more, its Roots music,

SID: We’ve been very influenced by that, but we’ve got a bit of a problem, cos to get on really well with the roots music, you got to sing in a foreign language, really, and father & I are a bit stuck in that department, are we.

Song ends with Sid saying: Awayday theyer!

Sounds typically Les!

John Kirkpatrick included this between verses in his 'Carolling and Crumpets' from the album of the same name...

Cows eat hay, but today it's juiced tomatoes
Eggs for tea the turkey lay yesterday...

Not what you're looking for, but on the same theme!

I heard at Bedworth last weekend another parody with chorus something like

Gaudy tree, gaudy tree is part of Christmas
Bring us beer and put the rum in the tea

I don't know if it's derived from or separate from this local parody:

Yes, that particular Gaudy Tree was credited by one of the group who sang it at Bedworth (Thrup'nny Bits) as having been writ by Norman Wheatley of Warwick Folk Club.

Since we're coming towards the season, I feel I should point out a couple of things.

1) V1 "mutlio" - my Latin is non-existent, but does that mean anything? I've seen that transcription in several places. "Multio" I can believe...

2) This is absolutely not the version I know (see below). I suspect Sid (AKA Chris Sugden) updated the lyrics at some point to fit the times (more than 20 years ago, I might add; I believe the song goes back to 1985 at least)! The ending to V1 is different, the V4 above I've never heard, and I presume was dropped...

Chorus
Away day, away day, loco in transit
Omnibus, St pancreas, away day
Away day, away day, loco in transit
Omnibus, St pancreas, away day

Cleopatra virginae, terra incognito
in loco parentis Caesar multi Kama Sutra

Chorus

Strangulated hernia, coitus interruptus

Chorus

In dramatis personae My Little Pony

Chorus

Romulus et Remus in flagrante delictae
Honi soit qui mal y pense, Harry Belafonte

Chorus

Non compos mentis, continuo ad nauseam

Almost anything by the Archpoet will fit to Gaudete:

Meum est propositum in taberna mori,
ut sint vina proxima morientis ori.
tunc cantabunt letius angelorum chori:
"Sit Deus propitius huic potatori"

My free* translation, different metre:

My only ambition's to die in a pub,
Surrounded by women and liquor and grub.
You'll hear all the angels, "Saint Peter," they'll shout,
"Come and open the gates for this drunken old lout!"

Or try this:

Meum pectus sauciat puellarum decor,
Et quas tactu nequeo, Saltem corde mechor

Guest, PB:
My only ambition's to die in a pub,
Surrounded by women and liquor and grub.
You'll hear all the angels, "Saint Peter," they'll shout,
"Come and open the gates for this drunken old lout!"

First two lines:
Dying in a public house is my one ambition
Feast and drink as I carouse girls I proposition

I think the scansion's right, but I shouldn't end a sentence with a proposition!

Next two lines:
All the angels then will shout; "Open up! St Peter"
There's no reason to keep out this young lotus eater

Again, okay 'old' would scan just as well as 'young'

I note that (back in 2011) Moorley Man said "Gaudy Tree was credited by one of the group who sang it at Bedworth (Thrup'nny Bits) as having been writ by Norman Wheatley of Warwick Folk Club".

I found it on Mudcat many years ago, credited to no-one (just a note of "Translated from the Latin original") and have been singing it for years without crediting anyone.

Would it be difficult (or inappropriate) to add the author to the appropriate post?

Hi, Vikki - It's my understanding that the song was written by Sid Kipper, as we have above. I'm not fully convinced of that authorship or that we have accurate lyrics, so I'm hoping someone will come up with credible documentation.

No, Joe - as far as I know, the only Gaudete parody written by Sid Kipper is Awayday (which I sang at the 5th December singaround - duly credited and with extra verses of my own (again duly credited)). Kipper aficionionados will spot that Gaudy Tree isn't quite Sid's style, but I have nothing to go on other than a Trunch Hunch!

Somewhere I heard another Gaudete parody, "Crudités," but it may just be a spinoff from the Sid Kipper song. Anybody know it?

Crudités
Lyrics by Pat Goodacre, Jessica Abraham, Blanche Rowen, Mike Gulston.  Melody traditional, 15th century

Crudités, crudités with crisps as starters
Anchovies in virgin oil, crudités

Guacamole, caviare, basil and tomata
Aubergine and feta dip, taramasalata

Gorgonzola, Camembert, tapenade and nachos
Button mushrooms à la Greque, croutons in gazpacho

Tiramisu, creme brulée, chocolate that melts,  a
Cheesecake and profiterôles - pass the Alka Seltzer!

Setting the record straight now:
The YouTube video that Joe linked above (15 Dec 22 - 06:39 PM) is the authentic Sid Kipper one. Note the delightfully twisted melody, so subtly altered from Gaudete itself.
The second YouTube link, the performance by Sarah Collins, uses Sid's words but she sings the Gaudete melody instead.
