Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: fat B****rd Date: 30 Nov 11 - 03:11 PM I believe his band were actually on at Woodstock but never in the films. I met him briefly when he was with with The Artwoods, he seemed a nice enough man. RIP Keef. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: GUEST,Woodsie Date: 01 Dec 11 - 07:04 AM That's right Keef Hartley did play at Woodstock - I remember when my old schoolmate Mick Jones (later of The Clash) bought the first KH album, I think it was called halfbreed. It had a gate-fold sleeve with him dressed in a full indian chief feathered headdress, quite a striking image at the tme. I think it started with a recording of a phone call from John Mayall telling him he was sacked! This was all ground breaking stuff back in 69. RIP |
Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: alanabit Date: 01 Dec 11 - 09:28 AM He was a stalwart of the early British blues scene who played with most of the big names. By all accounts he was a bit of a character too. I read one story of how he was playing at a gig, at which one punter had the temerity to boo. He neatly parted the hair of the offender with a well aimed drumstick and then continued playing as if nothing had happened. I am sorry to hear of his passing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: GUEST,John James Date: 01 Dec 11 - 12:22 PM Keef Hartley died 27-11-11 aged 67. I met him thro playing with Dick Heckstall Smith, they were pals from John Mayall days. Keef was drummer also with Rory Storm & Hurricanes, with whom Ringo played before moving on to another group from Liverpool. And then one year Keef turned up at Norwich Folk Festival and played with Rick Kemp & Mike Chapman. Classic image sat behind a drum kit with the Wild West gear..buckskin fringes etc. R.I.P. Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: GUEST,lindeanlad Date: 06 Dec 11 - 03:20 PM I saw Keith play at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh with his Big Band back in my schooldays. He has always been a class act and leaves behind a great musical legacy. Sad loss. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: GUEST,George Frampton Date: 07 Dec 11 - 07:53 AM I'm really very sorry to hear of Keef's passing. I love the jazz blues fusion of his early albums which were only embryonic in his days with John Mayall. Miller Anderson's vocals were key to this and Keef's band never deserved the accolades other bands received. I wish I had more of his stuff on CD, but will always treasure my vinyl copies of 'Halfbreed' and 'Little Big Band'. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Keef Hartley RIP November 2011 From: GUEST,Paul H Date: 05 Mar 12 - 03:20 PM He was the first drummer I watched. Some of his fills still appear when I play. He and Gary Thain ( also deceased) were a great rhythm section. I am glad I heard him and his bands so many times. |
