A local resale shop has a Martin backpacker guitar. They want $165 for it. How can I tell, without restringing, if it's playable. Neck is not bowed; no visible damage.

If I foolishly buy a portable guitar, I will have officially come down w/ Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. Especially since I wracked up my wrist and can't play at present.

Can't answer the playable question without trying it.
They are, however, little more than a largish dulcimer for tone, volume, and playable fun. I speak as a previous owner of one ( yes, GAS get's me too).
I sold mine, and it's the only Martin out of four that I have disposed of.
Hope this helps,
Roger

ask yourself - am I a backpacker? Would such an item grace my life? Would it involve any members of the family going hungry?

If in spite of this, you still want it. Go for it. We go this way but once.

may all your earthly desires be so easily satisfied!

If you didn't know that you use strings on guitars, not threads, then I would recommend you take up something else!

Preparing for 'incoming' but I've always thought the Backpacker' to be the most sorry excuse for a guitar - let alone a Martin.

I found it completely unbalanced and the best possible reason to carry an iPod.

Now taking cover - I'd rather carry a beater Yamaha, far better solution

Brian May tells it correctly. I stand by his opinion. Gotta a repaired Tanglewood for campsites etc.
