Every year my customers and friends tell me that they really miss me in the Blackmore Gardens at Sidmouth Folk Week. So just as a matter of interest can you let me know on this thread if I should apply for a pitch again for 2012.

Sal

It would be nice to see you back there Sal. However, don't let them rip you off, for the pitch.
Shan't be there myself unfortunately. It's too far for my budget these days.

I wonder if this thread is the best way to make the approach.

I'd have thought there would be an application form somewhere on the folk week website.

If this is a genuine question, and if the pitch costs are too high for you to make a decent profit, then no, I wouldn't bother applying.

However given the tone of previous threads on the subject, someone far more cynical than me might suspect that this looks rather like an attempt to get just one more good Sidmouth-bashing thread in before the end of the year.

So have fun y'awl ...

I rather think Sally is trying to gauge the demand from Mudcatters for her lovely lemonade. I don't see her OP as political, more commercial.

Steve: in answer to your comment;
Does anyone want to see The Lemomade Lady at Sidmouth, is all I want to know.
It's bloody typical that someone reads more into something than is intended.

John: you are right

I would love it if you were back on the blackmore gardens. Thirsty (dusty) work selling CDs! :)

I wasn't going to look at this thread - I thought it would be another Sidmouth whinge. I was very surprised to find it was Sal wanting to know about demand - perghaps re-titling (is that possible) or a new thread titled 'Who wants to buy lemonade from Sal at Sidmouth this year?' might get more response?

I'm unlikely to be there this year.

Me too - but don't let the buggers screw you with stupidly high fees.

You're a sole trader and you're there to make money primarily for you. The festival has to cover expenses, but not to profit so much that you end up financing them.

I hope you can make it work for you and that we'll see you there.

M

Yes PM Joe Offer and tell him what you want to change it from/to.

I would love to see you back but with the fees they charge and the previous wet summers the fees have got to be reasonable for it to be worth your while. Maybe a pitch somewhere other than the Blackmoor?

Quite simply, apply if you wish, set your own budget, if they ask too much for the pitch fee, negotiate or walk away. It is 99% irrelevant what a few people on here think - your customers are the other 99% of attendees.

There are some uncertainties this year (Olympics and it's the year when the credit crunch is supposed to start to hurt). Not seen much sign of that around Sidmouth yet!

There was supposed to be a presentation by your friend Mr Braithwaite at the Sidmouth Town Council meeting a few days ago - guess what? I turned up to listen and the agenda item was swiftly put into Part B of the meeting (from which mere taxpayers are excluded). So whatever was said will be filtered before it is deemed fit for mere human consumption.

I've sent an email asking about stewarding - I guess I have about as much chance of being accepted as you do!!

On a positive note the official website has been (is being) redesigned and parts are much better. Lots looks to be in draft form with too many words. It is to be hoped it gets polished soon.

I'm called a "pain in the a**e" if I try to negotiate. I think you are aware of that already,

Well, after what was said to you and about you last year, Sal, I think they should give you a pitch for nothing!

Sidmouth isn't Sidmouth without The Lemonade Lady, period!

Sally:

I don't see that negotiating is anything other than normal business practice. Organisations may set a flat fee but you are entitled to ask if there is any leeway. Bands negotiate all the time. It is not as though they are selling 15 identical pitches all with an identical amount of passing trade, similar proximity to entrances etc.

If a man who thinks of himself as having some significant social standing in the folk world retains a grudge against a woman after a year, then this tells you far more about him than it does about who was marginally in the right or wrong last year - even assuming there was a right or wrong side to it all.

negotiating as far as i am concerned is vital to supporting any business you know your profit margins and turnover. If you can not afford the ground rent and make a reasonable profit then you negotiate to try and make your product available. If you cannot you walk away you are not in the business of making a loss.
If the people you are dealing with don.t understand simple business there is nothing you can do about that but feel sorry for the loss of enrichment in their lives
