Subject: How do you find this swedish song? From: GUEST,victcent Date: 01 Jan 12 - 06:46 PM Many swedes would say that this song captures the swedish volksgeist, the "vemod" (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vemod) as we call it. It's a ballad called "Blue virgin isles" or in swedish "the heaven is innocently blue" written by Ted Gärdestad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZwXHNnt-co |
Subject: RE: How do you find this swedish song? From: Gibb Sahib Date: 01 Jan 12 - 10:33 PM Interesting idea, but I'm not sure if I follow. I am not Swedish, so I don't suppose I "naturally" feel that. Maybe you could elaborate. Is this also a quality in older "folk" songs? Is this concept of "vemod" usually applied to more recent "pop" songs? As an native English speaker, hearing it in English, it seems nice but not at all profound or moving to me. I listened to a Swedish version, which I liked better simply because of the beauty of the sounds of that language. |

Subject: RE: How do you find this swedish song? From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 02 Jan 12 - 08:54 AM Hello, Victcent. I'm Lutheran, nad though I'm not Swedish, I have noticed various tunes in the hymnal which are Swedish folk tunes. I agree with you that Ted Gardestad's melody fits in with that tradition. Thanks for posting. |
