Subject: Kentucky Christmas From: Peter T. Date: 06 Jan 12 - 10:15 AM I spent a whole lot of time during the holidays looking for a nice Applachiany Christmas album that I could have in the background as I racked up VISA bills. I tried a variety (Mark O'Connor and others) but none were really authentic, not acoustic wallpaper, and worth it I wandered around on Mudcat (THE SOURCE OF TRUTH), and then it hit me by osmosis. Fool that I was, I had forgotten about "Kentucky Christmas" -- Jean Ritchie and friends and family. Ordered it, and been listening to it with delight, though Christmas is over. You could stash this recommendation for next Christmas, or don't wait..... |
Subject: RE: Kentucky Christmas From: 2581 Date: 06 Jan 12 - 11:51 AM Don't forget to listen to Phil Ochs' single "No Christmas in Kentucky"...! It has been covered on YouTube by Raymond Crooke. See links below. No Christmas in Kentucky - Phil Ochs Raymond Crooke's cover version |
Subject: RE: Kentucky Christmas From: GUEST Date: 06 Jan 12 - 03:22 PM I had a similar reaction to O'Connor's Appalachian Christmas -- beautiful music, but Appalachian? Some of my favorite Christmas Music from the Mountains: Down Came An Angel, the Cherry Tree Carol, I Wonder As I Wander, the fiddle tunes Breaking Up Christmas and Old Christmas. As you've discovered tho, you just can't beat Jean's Christmas album. FYI: Ochs' "No Christmas..." is drawn from a coal strike in Perry County, Ky., in 1963 or so, same event that inspired Paxton's High Sheriff of Hazard and Malvina Reynolds' "Clara Sullivan's Letter." |
