Jane suffered an extreme reaction to a chemo session yesterday. The infusion had to be stopped immediately after literally just a minute or two. Here is part of an email from Ann which sums up the situation:

My Darling Nigel
Latest news is that Jane has signed a paper to the effect that if she has a cardiac arrest ( a real
possibility ) she does not want to be resuscitated. Now that there is nothing that can be done
for her she has had enough, but still resisting hospice care.........

Lots of love
Ann xxxxxxxxx

Pete, you're absolutely right, that's precisely what she thinks. The sad truth is that that is almost certainly now what will happen. It is our fervent wish that Jane spends her final days & hours, free from pain, dignity preserved, surrounded by her Family, in a peaceful environment with caring professionals waiting in the wings for when they are needed. I spoke to Ann this morning & she intimated that Jane might be having a change of heart.
Wendy, I know St.Francis Hospice well. My Father spent his final days there.
All of your most recent posts are filled with so much Love & Tenderness. I am rendered speechless.
Gnu, "Some things..." Without knowing, I know & understand.

I suspect we shall be dropping anchor soon,
With Deepest Love to You All,
                                                                   Nigel & Ann.

Nigel, I wish Jane, Ann, and you continuing strength to face whatever lies ahead.

I have my blanket about my shoulders. I turned down the heat on this "warm" spring-like day and opened the windows to blow out the stale stink of winter. I am allowing the passive stored heat in the house to bring things back to "non-chatter".

Dearest Nigel... I feel comfort in your words. I shall not explain that. Some things, eh? Bless.

Oh, my friend, in my heart I am wrapping a blanket around you and Ann and especially Jane as she travels this journey and you with her. Let the warm memories of your father's care remind you that love never dies, and your love for Jane and hers for you will keep you wrapped in love for all time.

Oh my dear Nigel

my Godmother too refused to go to a hospice, but eventually did, her pain was controlled and she came home and returned to St. Francis Atte Bower a number of times, her pain was gone and she came and danced at my daughters wedding.
But I know you dont need to be told that , you know how wonderful the hospice movement is. May you and Ann,with your wisdom, guide Jane in the right direction.
Holding you all in our hearts, our dear friends, God bless you

With all our love and thoughts

Wendy and Billy xxxxx

Oh, Nigel.

Could it be that Jane is thinking privately that if she goes into the hospice she may not come out?

Stay strong. Pete.

I've read & re-read dozens of your posts...a veritable plethora of Love, Wisdom, Experience, Humour, Anecdotes, Advice, Compassion...the list is practically endless. As the saying goes: "All Human Life is here".
I love the blanket theme. A dearly loved Mudcat Friend made two blankets for Jane & Ann some time ago. Hand made treasures are so special. I am immediately reminded of my Father wrapping a large towel (stand-in blanket!) around me after he had washed me in the tin bath in front of the fire. This would be followed by a big hug, some energetic drying off & straight into my pyjamas & dressing gown...no central heating in our house, back in the 40s!
Jane is getting weaker by the day. She is in considerable pain, despite regular analgesia. She has been offered a few days at the local hospice to get the pain under control, but refuses to go. Her right as an adult to refuse, but Ann & I know through our experiences with our Parents, she would be so much more comfortable & her dignity protected.
I may be wrong, but I think this part of our Voyage may ending sooner than we had expected.
Thank you for your Love, Your Hugs, Your Blankets, the quotations from Frost & Hugo.
             Please keep within hailing distance,
                                                                   With Love to You All,
                                                                                                   Nigel & Ann.

I've taken out a hand knitted wool blanket knitted for me by a special person in my life from my bed chest (handmade chest by artisan gnu) and it's to be laid over and under sheets and a quilt until warm weather in lieu of my father's woolen army blanket which has kept me warm since he passed. I also have taken out of my chest the green and white woolen blanket knitted for me by another lover and it will cover my legs while I type until warm weather. Me knees is toasty as I type. Feels good... warm... safe. Wool seems to be all the rage these days. Seems there is strength in these woollies.

And a warm blanket wrapped around you and your's also, maeve.

Soft-belly...open heart. Love.

Nigel, I'm rendered silent in many ways because while I imagine your family's journey is similar to what we experienced during my family's journey with my beloved sister, I also know your experience must be different, because you are a different family, and your personal experience is even more different because you and Ann are the parents, and I was (am) a sister.

What I can do and will continue to do, is keep pulling at the oars with the rest of the crew.

Holding all of you in my heart with great tenderness.

Janie

the blanket tent is a wonderful image.

Years ago I attended a folk club in an unheated building on a cold Sydney winter night (much warmer than a snow-season winter night, but still cold!) so a member went to his car & brought in 2 ginormous toasty blankets & half the small audience snuggled under one, the others under the second! Cosy!

After posting on some other threads I started to open this one, I realized I'd lost my internet conncetion. I jiggled some cords and I'm back for now. Anyway, even if I'm not here (on Mudcat) for you, I am here with you in spirit and sending my love.

Can I just say "Ditto?" Seriously Nigel, your comment is wonderful but moreover I think it applies to and might have been written by all of us on this voyage.

I have personally been the recipient of so much from so many around here for such a long time....since 1999! And I too am saddened that most of us will never meet but I value these friendships as some of the best in my life. This group on this thread has crystalized all the best of what Mudcat can offer and the power to both give strength and draw it from each other at the same time is something I find quite singular.

For all of that and more, thanks to "all the good people" who enrichen my life.

Spaw

We have been voyaging together for nigh on fifteen months...almost impossible to believe it's been that long. That you have all chosen to stay the course & take precious moments out of your day to send Words & Music of Love, Comfort, Care & Compassion, says much about the type of People you are. That I will likely never meet any of you grieves me. That I have you in my life fills my heart with Joy & restores my faith in Humankind a thousand times over. Your capacity to do Good is boundless & as it's recipient I stand humbled, grateful & moved to the core of my being, a blanket hugged tight around my shoulders.

Subject: RE: BS: kat needs a little mojo, please
From: Megan L - PM

I remember once on a tour of our local croft museum the man was showing us carding and weaving, at one point he cut a length of the spun yarn and handed it round everyone pulled and picked at it in their curiosity till it fell apart. One person pointed out how fragile the strand of yarn was, how easily it was pulled apart and unravelled.

The auld lad guiding us round nodded acknowledgement of what had been said. He then pointed out that when that frail thread was woven together with all the other frail threads it made a fine blanket strong enough that we could toss someone up in the air and safely catch them. That is the wonder of Mudcat individually we may be weak but when we come together to become the Mudcat blanket the strength and warmth we generate spreads like sunshine round the world.
********************************************************************

We are here. We want to be a wool blanket.

Thanks again, Megan L. Those words will resonate thru my very soul for the rest of my life.

A brief check in...much goodness, love & compassion here to encourage & comfort. Ann is with Jane, I'm home in East London. Jane had her first chemo session since December this Monday past. Scans & consultations to follow with further chemo if deemed necessary or advisable. As Spaw says: "Waiting is the pits". Jane is unable to walk unaided now. It's hard to believe that just over eighteen months ago she was playing Netball, driving the girls to school, keeping house, socialising.....cancer is such a cruel, insidious disease.
Stay close, my Dear Friends, we really can't do this without you,

We did the drive yesterday and today and Karen goes to work again tonight.............Gawd I love her and I have no idea what I would do without her. Of course from the time I met her and on, I never did know what I'd do without her. While in Columbus we also got the weekly Aronesp shot so that's it for the week!

Wendy, with this renewal of energy I'll be keeping things crosssed and holding out good thoughts for some good news from the marrow biopsy and scan. Waiting is the pits.

And to Allison and Janie and gnu and pete and Nigel and the entire crew.....THANKS!!! This is a great crew and a fine boat to sail on.
