Good news/bad news.

There are two types of ductile carcinoma in situ involved and neither looks invasive (that is, spread to other areas). Surgery, a mastectomy, is suggested and which we thought was best. It should take care of the problem, always the proviso that "you can't really tell until the pathologist reports." In the last case immunotherapy and possibly radiation would also be used.

A two step process: removal and then reconstruction. It's easier that way if there is a spread.

So...the uncertainty of treatment is over. Now comes the long slog.

Every ship can stand a swashbuckling someone either on deck or off the bow. Imperious Rex may need new glasses as well as teeth, but it don't matter. Bridges all over the place - bridge deck, in the mouth, and between threads on Mudcat, eh?

Bridges of care, concern and connection - just gets expressed differently on separate blocks in the same neighborhood. Hope y'all come away tomorrow with some degree of clarity regarding treatment for Pat, Rapparee. Also that your own body gets glued back together in reasonable working order.

maeve hasn't posted in awhile. Thinking of you and tl, Dear One.

Stumbled across this Iris Dement song last night. Collective 'I'= 'We.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSjIkVIUmJ4

Temporary fix is in the teeth. Permanent will be on April 13. But I don't look like a 5 year old, either.

We see the oncologist and the surgeon on Thursday afternoon. A port might be put in then, maybe.

Well, Rap, I've always heard that sugar rots the teeth, but you didn't have to go to that extreme to prove it! I hope when all is fixed, you'll find a lot to grin about.

I haven't mentioned it before, but I have had dental implants and one of them was to replace my front upper teeth -- knocked out when my brother managed to stop the bike I was riding and I hit the street teeth first.

Anyway, after many years I had implants put in. And they're great! Until we went to the last (and closing this year) sugar plantation in Hawai'i and I gently held a piece of raw sugarcane with my front teeth, gently tasting the juice.

To make it short, that front bridge broke clear through the metal the "teeth" are mounted upon. I go in Monday to have the damage cleared away and a temporary bridge installed. Two weeks later the new one should be in place.

How much is this going to cost, you ask? Well, the exam to discover it was USD 62.00. The new bridge, labor, materials and all, is under warranty and it won't cost my anything. The dentist was surprised, saying that in seventeen years this was only the third time he'd ever seen this happen.

But the replacement price is right. Maybe that's a sign things are looking up a bit.

See pm's Nigel. And I will be there, as I expect will most of the crew.

Thanks, Chantylass. I guess I am well past the days when there were sudden leaps and need to just keep my eye on the prize and notice that there is progress, though sometimes so slow it doesn't seem so. I wish, gnu. I'm too tired and too close to retirement to make waves on a worker comp case. It is complicated. the nature of my work is such that the injury no long impedes my ability to do my job. But doing my job does impede my physical recovery because I have to sit for hours on end during therapy and clinical assessments with no time between clients or getting the clinical notes finished to get up out of the chair and at least walk around the building for 5 minutes. Whine, whine, whine.

Pete, always holding Tommy in my thoughts.

Rap, I echo what Chantylass said. May you both be recovered from jet lag by the time you read this. And you know the crew is sailing along beside both you and Pat.

We swim, we sail, we sink, we rise. We lift each other up. Or toss a life preserver.   Sinks and Rises

Tomorrow, 23rd March is 'Jane's Day'. She sailed away, charting a course that none of us could follow. We watched in helpless disbelief, powerless to act. Three years have passed. The pain has become a yearning. We remain, keening softly for her memory. Join us tomorrow, just for a few, quiet moments. Bring with you your own memories too. You will be most welcome.

Good to see this thread again.

Janie, I hope you can get the help you need at work and thought the medical community to continue to improve. Sadly, the greatest progress happens early on, then it slows down. When insurance stopped paying for therapy, I joined the Y and made some gradual progress there, but I had retired and had time to go to the Y several days weekly. In the meantime, pass the tray up from the galley to me, then join me on the main deck.

Rap, let us know what the future holds. I hope it is better than it could be.

Pete, I'm glad Tommy is back in school. I'm sorry about your daughter and hope her situation improves soon.

Except for the occasional cold, I'm rarely ill, but I got hit by something overnight from Saturday to Sunday. It was a GI problem. I don't know if it was a 24-hour virus or caused by food, but it was nasty though thankfully short-lived. I slept most of Sunday and began rehydrating in the late afternoon. I have slept a lot today and have begun eating soft foods. I hope to be back to normal tomorrow, when I have a routine doctor's appointment already on my calendar.

Hoping you are making progress with the the bronchitis rapperee, and the most helpful medical path is taken for pat.likewise hoping , janie ,that you begin to discern some progress to allay the frustration.   Tommy has been off school with a supposedly infectious skin complaint , but they ...hospital... were unable to take bloods and did,nt take a swab. We sent him back to school today. We also have a domestic crisis with one of our daughters and she is in bad mental health as a result. Seems to be getting a bit choppy for the voyage at present , let's hope for calmer seas.   Blessings.         Pete.

I'm feeling discouraged, frustrated, a bit angry, and also a little scared regarding my lack of progress re rehab of the leg. Very little progress in strength or balance over the past 6 weeks. Frustrated with my PT guy and also my surgeon, and also aware of the impact of going back to work full time, seeing clients all day with little opportunity to even get up and walk around the building for a few minutes at a time.

I'm starting to worry that I may never fully recover.

Having said that, I am aware that walking with a cane or with a weird, hitching gait is a pretty mild thing to deal with in terms of what so many others face, or have faced. So just a minor whine in the scheme of things, and I can still haul myself up and down the galley ladder to offer the warm or cold beverage of your choosing, and a lovely scone baked by others on the crew. Just can't climb up the masts to set the sails.

How be all my mates?

Donuel... ditto CL.

Maui? Waui! Now, there's also Maui Waui. I might have smoked it back in the 70s but I can't recall. It might have been when I was working in Churchill Falls, Labrador and went fishing on Simms Lake. If I did, I did not inhale as I would have only been pretending to partake so as to bow to peer pressure, so to speak... to be polite and not offend my hosts. Man, that was a great fishing trip. Really man, what a trip, man. I caught one Lake Trout (out of many) that was huge! When I got back to the hotel, I gave it to the barmaid and she threw a party, the highlight of which was stuffed baked trout. Talk about a MUNCHOUT! >;-)

The vog (volcanic smog) has blown away, at least for now, on the trade winds. I hope it stays away as we think it's been part of the problem.

Yes, the idea is to see what will help the most with the least invasive therapy. Surgery will almost certainly happen, but it may be less radical than first thought, or so we hope.

Tomorrow we visit Oahu and Honolulu, and then a week in a condo on Maui before we return to the hullabaloo.

Hope that bronchitis is less acute now, Rap. When you robbed the plane passengers you were supposed to leave the germs behind, not press them into the handle of your rapier, then wipe your mouth! May you and Pat still soak up lots of sunshine, breezes and wonderous sights at wonderous sites, and arrive home ready for whatever life brings next.

Wendy, hugs.

Especially holding the children, Tommy and Tiny Tim in my thoughts.

Doing sufficiently fair to middling myself that I am up for setting out chairs on deck and in the galley, as it may suit you. Baking the last of winter's apples to pass around to those who favor something a little sweet, plus some mulled wine, a soothing herb tea for them what need some sleep, and a stimulating herbal/black tea blend, not to mention some excellent coffee brewed from beans that were locally roasted at our last port-of-call and still quite vivid tasting.

I know we are also tired of cabbage but I've livened it up with some early spring greens Chantylass found when she rowed briefly ashore. Still early but in a sheltered, sunny lee she found a bit of chickweed, young dandelion leaves, woods sorrel and pepper grass.

I was out foraging a bit also before I came back on board, and have some fresh-dug sassafras root. I believe we have the makings for several spring tonic treats, even aboard this ship sailing the seven seas.

Any fresh eggs yet, maeve?

Warm places below and on deck in sheltered areas facing the sun, brisk breezes on the forecastle, and a few gently swaying hammocks above and below decks for those what need gentle rocking. And at all quarters and on every deck, love abounds.

Change the "I" to "We" etc. Boats to Build

Dear Wendy,
Such a moving account of your dear Mother's funeral. In a sense, I'm not surprised to hear of your subsequent illness. You invested every ounce of your love & energy caring for your Mother, leaving precious little for yourself. I'm as certain as I can be that the 'bug' is your body's way of making you take to your bed & rest. BB sounds like he's doing a great job.
A closing thought...fill your 'empty' house with as many memories that you can recall of your dear Mother & Father. You may find you need to upsize!
                   With Love,

good morning from a very sunny East coast of England!

I have been away too long, early January! Have just been catching up, so sending love to everyone, hoping sadness is eased and health is improved, so just sending hugs!

The past few weeks have been very difficult with highs and lows. We held mothers funeral on January 20th, at 92 I thought her friends had all passed on, but the church was packed, with people standing. My son read a beautiful eulogy and my daughter read a poem that mum had written to dad in her letters to him in 1943. The RAF sent standard bearers( a surprise that was so touching) There must have been 200 plus people. 60 family and close friends came back to the house and joined us for supper and sharing happy stories of a wonderful lady.A beautiful bitter sweet day.

The following week I went down with a virus and have spent the last 5 weeks in bed, no energy, not wanting to eat sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. Billy has been wonderful looking after me!! The Dr says it will take time to recover, so I am taking things very slowly. The house seems so empty, not just missing mum but for years we have had carers almost 24 hours a day, so it does seem very quiet.

Onwards and upwards, things can only get better. sailing on..............

much love

Wendy xxxxxx

Quickly! We are in Kona and I have an early case of acute bronchitis, for which I have seen a doctor who put me on antibiotics, etc. Pats surgery on the 29th is cancelled for now; they will be doing some MRIing and tumor-directed drugs and do any cutting in a couple of months. I'll probably have hand surgery when we get back.
