Losing your mother is never easy no matter what age you are. Mine died when I was 18 and she 43. My Dad told me that night I that I would never have a day I didn't think of her.......and he was right.......and that is good......

{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}} to you and your family, Pete.

I can imagine what it meant to your mom and to her grandchild for her to get hold that great grandbaby. My lovely neice by marriage was 7 months pregnant when Daddy died. They had sent him and Mom an ultrasound photo that clearly showed Roxie's facial features. Dad took such joy in looking at that picture, and handed it around to visitors proudly. "See my new great grand-daughter? Isn't she beautiful?" My parents raised my nephews after my sister died, and it also brought great solace to Matt that Daddy so delighted in Roxie in utero.

I have come to admire Nigel very much on this voyage. He has opened his heart (and his thread) to others who are going through difficult times, and that speaks for his spirit. You are in my thoughts each day, and I expect that will continue. You too, Pete and Dean and Dan. It's always good to know you're not alone when stuff happens.

Lovely, Janie.

My dad got to hold my grandson when he was born. My dad was literally shaking because he never thought he would see a great-grandchild. (Mom didn't live long enough to see me married, let alone a mother.) We made sure my dad was sitting down in an armchair when he held him. Even then my dad was reluctant, but we assured him all would be well. I will never forget the look of wonder on my dad's face.

It's been six days since I last posted, but it feels twice as long as that. I've spent three of those six days with my GP & two Diabetic Nurse Specialists. We weren't cohabiting, but it did seem as if I was spending a disproportionate amount of my time at the clinic! The initial diagnosis has been revised 'up' & it has been suggested that I start getting used to the fact that Type 2 could become Type 1 sooner rather than later. That news took a bit of digesting...went through a range of emotions, ranging from anxious & scared to bloody angry! It's now Saturday & acceptance is knocking on my door. It is only a gentle knock at present, but acceptance is the only way to go.
I've missed your company, your wise, comforting words, your humour...Bruce, ChanteyLass, Wendy, Spaw, kat, gnu, Pete, Janie, Dean, Dan & everyone else who voyages with us. Singling out individuals is a perilous task, but Bruce's post of 22nd June has touched me very deeply. Several of us have exchanged emails, where we have been able to share intimacies that can only be shared one to one. Intensely personal aspects & moments from our lives...so precious.
Lest we forget, the lady for whom this thread was started, our Darling Jane, remains stable, no further spreading of the cancer & the lung tumours appear to be shrinking. We really don't know whether 'cure' is a word we dare think of, let alone utter, but she has energy & a sense of purpose & is living her life much as she always has done. In January, when she received her diagnosis, everything about her changed. Jane was still called Jane, but the Jane we knew & loved was in a dark & frightening place. Now, the sun shines from her face once again...still taking things a day at a time, but with a hint of 'lightness' that was not apparent before.
Time, I think, to conclude this Saturday Digest. Ann & I send our Love to You all, hoping that Life is treating you kindly & that you will continue to voyage with us,
                            With Love,
                                           Nigel & Ann

I'm sorry to read about the change in your diagnosis. I can only think that the stress you have been under has caused your own condition to accelerate.

In addition to the professional advice you are getting about meds, nutrition, and exercise, I hope somebody has mentioned meditation. That could mean a traditional form of meditation, but for you it might also mean music and Mudcat! At least I hope we are easing your level of stress.

I'm glad to read that Jane is doing well, and I am full of hope for her continuing to do so.

Nigel: For 28 years I've walked a few hundred miles, tent camped in rustic settings, crawled through mud in a cave, hot air ballooned, skinny dipped, done small construction jobs, listened to her singing in a big choir group and occasional solo settings, and made love like rabbits, with a lady who had already been totally insulin dependent for about 27 years before I met her. She retired a year and a half ago from a career as an occupational therapist. The damn diabetes has been a pesky nuisance the whole time, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody; but on the grand scale of things...

One of my diabetic friends who is over 70 carries his needle in a toothbrush holder & has been known to remove it from his pocket while talking to friends & jab himself without people really noticing!

The only thing that holds him back a bit is a childhood bike accident that left one leg shorter & stiff. There have been times in the recent past that his leg has caused him big trouble & further operations, but the diabetes - never.

Diabetes support organisations have lots of info. Other 'Catters have diabetes too & can offer tips & info.

Yes, good news in several different guises, undeniably so. The Diabetes diagnosis has forced me to look closely at my diet (not necessarily a bad thing) & my M.O. in general. Because my 'situation' is only one week old, everything is still a bit raw & 'unprocessed' & there is a fair amount of info. to digest. I'm getting there, ChanteyLass, Dean (best four lines I've read in a long time!), sandra & gnu. I don't handle 'change' very well, particularly when it involves the workings of my own 'bod', but get there I will.

I hear ya, Nigel. My diet, such as it has been, is to remove sugars from my diet, most starches and fats. WTF is left? Wanna take me out for supper? Line up some lettuce, slightly underdone with a hint of carrot and garlic to bring forth the flavour of the green leaves. Sounds a treat, huh?

I have many diabetic friends, and please believe me when I tell you handling it's a do-able thing. Just need the right frame of mind.

Best wishes to you, Ann and of course Jane.

If you can access it, I recommend watching the docu "Forks Over Knives." My doctor told me about it. Some astonishing findings re' diet and ailments. Now, when you are looking at changing your diet anyway, would be a good time to watch it and/or get the companion book, imo. (I don't like change, either!:-)

gnu, you've reminded me of that ubiquitous 'T' shirt that did the rounds a while ago: "Same shit, different day". I guess for me it would have to read: "Different shit, different day!" Thanks, Bruce & kat...Bruce, you made me laugh...good, morning medicine.
I've touched on this next issue before, but I think it's time to raise it once again. In one sense, this thread has almost run it's natural course. It began as a plea for help & support when our daughter, Jane received her cancer diagnosis. The help & support, the wise & comforting words poured in in abundance. At times, almost overwhelming, but always sincere & profoundly meaningful. Over time, as Jane's condition has stabilised, our 'remit' has broadened considerably. Jane remains ever-present, but we have also been able to explore many of our own, frequently deeply personal issues. Sometimes for the first time 'en publique'. The fact of the matter is; Jane could live for several more years, maybe, even live out her 'allotted span'...we just don't know.
The flip-side is, that since January, we've established & nurtured a dialogue, one which I find invaluable. ChanteyLass wrote earlier about Meditation. She was absolutely right, Mudcat & Music are a form of Meditation for me. It has become a part of my life that I would be loath to lose, but do you feel the same way? Is it time to drop anchor for the last time, can we maintain the interest, energy & commitment that has kept the thread alive & so vibrant? Do write in with your views.
          Much Love to You All,
                                          Nigel & Ann

Nigel

Many years ago I was helping some people in a small Newfoundland town to move their furniture from one house to another. One of the fellows decided to drive with the then-empty truck to a place from which the bay could be seen. One of the brothers was pointing out the sights to me and he began to tell me what each of the craft in the bay was: that's a dory, that's a schooner, that's a punt, that's a dragger, that's a trawler . . . . I must have had a puzzled look on my face because the other brother came over, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Don't let him confuse you Bruce, them's boats!"

I don't recall ever being in an organization that had more than one leader. In keeping with the extended metaphor of this thread and its possible closure, that's your decision, captain, and I'll abide by your call.

I'll add just this: I like coming here because it's peaceful. The thread's a kinda harbour filled with boats, each one from other seas and each one with different needs and and abilities to express those needs. It's one of few threads wherein people have a common purpose and with few digressions keep to that purpose. In brief, I'd like to see it stay open.

Devil's advocate has never been a role I've played with any ease, so it is with the greatest of pleasure (this should be hollered from the masthead), I announce with the utmost alacrity:"Onwards we voyage!"
It was never my intention to close the thread, but because it's emphasis has changed, I felt some clarification was needed so we can set a new course...although I think we've already done that & nobody really noticed!
The last words today come from Rumanci: "We all need a safe haven sometimes (and even in dry dock tha needs tha barnacles scraped tha knows?)"
And Bruce: "It's one of few threads wherein people have a common purpose and with few digressions keep to that purpose".
So, the wind is set fair & the barometer is rising. If we get a move on, we should just catch the tide,

Ebbie needed relief from Kendall's bagpipe thread which I have been trashing lately. She is right of course.......and how many others are there lurking and enjoying?

As opposed to a few months ago, mostly things are going better for a lot of 'Catters and this thread sort of stands for all the bad times turning better........I'm no Pollyanna and I know of lfe's cycles so all will not always be well.......But when they are on the upswing we can enjoy them all the more by seeing how far things have come. When it gets tougher we can look back and see the support and love that will always be here.

I'm glad and I thank you for keeping this thread open and also for that moving PM.....I was pleased beyond words......and I still am. Now if you need diversion you can do a "Reverse Ebbie in the Pike Position" and go mess with Kendall who is always fun to mess with!!!

Depends on the size of the pike, Ebbie. Some of them can bite real nasty. I once was trying to get the lure out of one's mouth and lowered the line and my Newfie buddy hollered "STOP!" He took the rod and said "Watch this sonnyboy, cityboy, mainlander." He took a stick about an inch in diameter, held it in front of the pike's face and lowered the the fish to the ground. It's tail hit the ground and it propelled itself to the stick and bit it in two. Me buddy says, "Yer welcome fer yer fingers Sport." "Sport" is what they calls them fellahs from down south in the big city.

Maybe I shouldn't but, WTH... he threw the pike into the woods and said, "Reel in faster and ya won't be wastin our time, eh?" I asked why he didn't throw it back in. He said, "You'll just catch the boney fucker again and we wants is TROUT, ROIGHT? Besides, it'll bring bears." I asked if it was bear season and he said, "No. But it's self-defense season." Always thinkin, eh?

Like the Newf in Texas... The Texan asks the Newfie where he's from and the Newfie says, "You know where New York is?" the Texan says, "Yeh, yeh, I know where that is" The Newfie says, " Well b'y, you just drive north of there about 6 hours, turn right for 3 hours and catch a 6 hour ferry and you're there in Newfoundland."

The Texan says "That's got to be close to China!"

The Newfie thinks about this and then says, "I think you might be right. I work with a Chinese guy and he goes home for lunch every day!"

That is typical Newfie humour.

Well, okay, Jane! I'm already looking forward to the time when monthly check-ups become quarterly.

Dear Pete, it's a much over-used expression, but Time IS a great healer. You never forget, but the grief & pain gradually ebbs away. The experience is as individual as we are; there are no 'rules' about how long it should take, whether they be the expectations of others or those we impose on ourselves. Life goes on & your Life is there for the living...didn't know you played & sang, so get up on that mic & show 'em what a REAL singer sounds like!
Holding you in our thoughts with Love,
                                                                     Nigel & Ann.

Jane returns to Dubai today, but this time it really will be her final visit as an 'expat' resident. She returns to the UK with her Family towards the end of July. We spent Saturday with her...a very happy time (her sister was still over from NC) & she had enough energy to go fruit picking: strawberries, raspberries & gooseberries. No prizes for guessing what was on the dessert menu that evening, accompanied by generous helpings of clotted cream!
Jane talks openly & freely about her cancer, the fact that it's still there but apparently inactive for the moment. We suppose that the drug's trial has had a positive impact on her condition, but the research assistants & oncologists are remaining pretty tight-lipped, which I'm sure they have to for all sorts of professional reasons.
On Sunday, Ann & I visited Buckingham Palace. The State Rooms are opened to the public for a short time each year. A large palace, yes, but it really did feel like a lived-in home, not a museum to the Monarchy. Tea, Coffee & expensive profiteroles (for Ann), taken in the gardens 'out back', rounded off the day beautifully & not a Corgi in sight!
       Onwards we sail,
                               With Love,
                                              Nigel & Ann.

Bruce, will pass along your hi just as soon as. Better still, send her one of your CDs & broaden her Music education. The acoustics in the Music Room seemed very favourable!
                         Love to You & M.
                                                    Nigel.
