Can I just say "Ditto?" Seriously Nigel, your comment is wonderful but moreover I think it applies to and might have been written by all of us on this voyage.

I have personally been the recipient of so much from so many around here for such a long time....since 1999! And I too am saddened that most of us will never meet but I value these friendships as some of the best in my life. This group on this thread has crystalized all the best of what Mudcat can offer and the power to both give strength and draw it from each other at the same time is something I find quite singular.

For all of that and more, thanks to "all the good people" who enrichen my life.

the blanket tent is a wonderful image.

Years ago I attended a folk club in an unheated building on a cold Sydney winter night (much warmer than a snow-season winter night, but still cold!) so a member went to his car & brought in 2 ginormous toasty blankets & half the small audience snuggled under one, the others under the second! Cosy!

Nigel, I'm rendered silent in many ways because while I imagine your family's journey is similar to what we experienced during my family's journey with my beloved sister, I also know your experience must be different, because you are a different family, and your personal experience is even more different because you and Ann are the parents, and I was (am) a sister.

I've taken out a hand knitted wool blanket knitted for me by a special person in my life from my bed chest (handmade chest by artisan gnu) and it's to be laid over and under sheets and a quilt until warm weather in lieu of my father's woolen army blanket which has kept me warm since he passed. I also have taken out of my chest the green and white woolen blanket knitted for me by another lover and it will cover my legs while I type until warm weather. Me knees is toasty as I type. Feels good... warm... safe. Wool seems to be all the rage these days. Seems there is strength in these woollies.

I've read & re-read dozens of your posts...a veritable plethora of Love, Wisdom, Experience, Humour, Anecdotes, Advice, Compassion...the list is practically endless. As the saying goes: "All Human Life is here".
      I love the blanket theme. A dearly loved Mudcat Friend made two blankets for Jane & Ann some time ago. Hand made treasures are so special. I am immediately reminded of my Father wrapping a large towel (stand-in blanket!) around me after he had washed me in the tin bath in front of the fire. This would be followed by a big hug, some energetic drying off & straight into my pyjamas & dressing gown...no central heating in our house, back in the 40s!
    Jane is getting weaker by the day. She is in considerable pain, despite regular analgesia. She has been offered a few days at the local hospice to get the pain under control, but refuses to go. Her right as an adult to refuse, but Ann & I know through our experiences with our Parents, she would be so much more comfortable & her dignity protected.
    I may be wrong, but I think this part of our Voyage may ending sooner than we had expected.

my Godmother too refused to go to a hospice, but eventually did, her pain was controlled and she came home and returned to St. Francis Atte Bower a number of times, her pain was gone and she came and danced at my daughters wedding.
But I know you dont need to be told that , you know how wonderful the hospice movement is. May you and Ann,with your wisdom,guide Jane in the right direction.

I have my blanket about my shoulders. I turned down the heat on this "warm" spring-like day and opened the windows to blow out the stale stink of winter. I am allowing the passive stored heat in the house to bring things back to "non-chatter".

Jane suffered an extreme reaction to a chemo session yesterday. The infusion had to be stopped immediately after literally just a minute or two. Here is part of an email from Ann which sums up the situation:


My Darling Nigel
Latest news is that Jane has signed a paper to the effect that if she has a cardiac arrest ( a real
possibility ) she does not want to be resuscitated. Now that there is nothing that can be done
for her she has had enough,but still resisting hospice care.........

Pete, you're absolutely right, that's precisely what she thinks. The sad truth is that that is almost certainly now what will happen. It is our fervent wish that Jane spends her final days & hours, free from pain, dignity preserved, surrounded by her Family, in a peaceful environment with caring professionals waiting in the wings for when they are needed. I spoke to Ann this morning & she intimated that Jane might be having a change of heart.
         Wendy, I know St.Francis Hospice well. My Father spent his final days there.
         All of your most recent posts are filled with so much Love & Tenderness. I am rendered speechless.

Fine idea maeve.....There are so many songs and words on this thread that at this point I think it ranks as one of the best Mudcat has ever had while at the same time being one of the most unusual. What sets it apart is what created it and sustains it. The amount of love and care embodied here is beyond what has ever happened before. It was all about Jane but soon became about so many.

As these coming days pass, our love and support are all we can offer even as we know that nothing else is within our power. This will be a legacy Jane has created through wonderful, loving, parents, that has given more than she would ever believe possible and has meant more to me and so many others that words escape me to describe it.

We hold each other as we hold Jane, Nigel, and Ann.......Wrapped in a blanket of comfort and love. And right now we pull the blanket tight. I love you all.

Maeve, thank you for highlighting my Music. All the titles that Maeve has listed were written when I needed the Sanctuary of Music the most. I need that Sanctuary more than ever now.

Spaw, my namesake (I can forgive the double 'T'!). My Father was always addressed as Pat, despite the fact that his first name was Laurence. I have dim, childhood memories of one relative calling him Laurie. He was Pat to everyone, including my Mother.
The latest news on Jane is what we have been expecting for some time. Her Oncologist has given her three weeks maximum, but with a warning that Jane could die at any time. Three weeks could suddenly become three days, three hours, three minutes. Jane's Husband, Ann & Jane's children are at the hospital as I type this. Physically, I'm ok, but mentally very fragile. I carry with me your Love, your Blankets, your Care & Compassion; everything a man could ever need to see him through this maelstrom.
