k... thank you. Nuff said. As for the men with shovels, that used to be a pastime in my youth. Get a box of beer and load the lads in my Bug with the studded 6.5s on the rear and shovel out and/or push peoples' stuck cars out of the snow. Great fun. Got a cop car unstuck one night. Buddy asked if we had been drinking. I said, "Yeah. See ya later." We jumped in my Bug and roared off. He put the lights and siren on and came after us. I did a 180 with the hand break and floored it. He tried to do a 180 in his big-ass Chevy and ended up in the snowbank. Stupid move. We didn't go back to help him. >;-)

Well we had a good Samaritan. We were going to look after the grandchildren for 4 days while mummy and daddy flew to Berlin with 8 friends for a 50th Birthday celebration. The roads were blocked with drifts and we couldn't get to them and they couldn't get to us.

Then one of their friends came and picked us up in a 4 by 4 and avoiding the blocked roads they got us here in time for the parents to drive to London this evening. They fly out of London city airport in the morning ,fingers crossed.And Billy and I can have a 4 day holiday in a lovely cottage with the two little girls.

I don't remember weather like this in the UK before, Billy of course, New Jersey boy that he is, finds the country grinding to a standstill hilarious!!

I know a priest, a Dominican-order friar, who was born and raised in Minnesota not far from the state line with North Dakota. You can imagine what the snow THERE is like.

When he was a young and able-bodied teen, and a storm hit, his father, a decent working-class man, would order his son to bundle up and grab the shovels. The two of them would get into the family auto, and they would carefully venture out onto streets and roads. They would look for drivers and cars that were stranded or stuck, and make it their mission to dig them out and push the cars out of whatever ditch and get them rolling again.

That was his father's idea of being neighborly. The mother was similarly neighbor-oriented. You can imagine what a good pastor this friar is -- the world could use a score more of him.

When I lived in bad snow country along the edges of the Great Lakes (one place had an average of 120 inches [305 cm] and all winters were above average) I often wished I had the power to chain those who shouldn't be out to the walls of their homes. AND do something to remind people who HAD to go out to turn on their headlights even if snow wasn't falling, stop speeding, clean off their cars and not just the windshield(screen), and mostly to act like rational, thinking human beings!

Morning all.
Snowed in down on the Essex coast, unbelievable snow drifts , roads closed, schools shut, people are complaining that their roads haven't been gritted . One of the wonderful girls who cared for my lovely mum sent me a video of her being dug out by 2 snow plough on the road to Harwich, she has been out since 6 am trying to get to elderly people living on their own in rural places. Amazing people have been out all night ploughing the country roads and the police and ambulance crews are doing a wonderful job, and others are moaning about lack of grit!!!Put on your boots, leave the car in the garage and pop next door or down the road to see if the elderly neighbours need a bit of shopping or a cup of tea and a chat!

I won't start saying when I was young .............
But hey folks it is WINTER ??and we don't often get proper weather, if you don't have to go out to feed the farm animals, work in a hospital,or do something essential, then light a log fire, read a book, cook a stew, listen to music. Stay warm and feel lucky .

After much personal debate, I've decided to finally come out publicly here as transgender. Those of you who know me on Facebook, please don't mention it publicly there, because J-boy's family doesn't know and I'd like them not to learn of it from Facebook.

Those people in my real life that I've told have mostly been extremely supportive (Mum just saying "It's about time, I've known since you were a toddler" was a huge relief). My co-workers at the market have all been fantastic, too. I realize not everyone on Mudcat will be supportive, based on the most recent thread about gender-neutral language, but whatever. It's a huge relief to finally be me publicly.

I did everything Rap mentioned last summer. It works.

If doing the same thing over and over doesn't work , its insane to do it again. So Dean is off to boarding school with Psych help on staff.

Go to the funeral, if it happens. Stay in a motel, not with family. Be courteous and polite, but not intimate -- you left long ago. When asked why you're in a motel, reply "Because I didn't want to trouble anyone" (which is completely true). If someone brings up the past, pass it off with a kind word and keep your thoughts to yourself. Don't involve yourself with hate and despair.

Don't point out that whoever "he" was/is was three years old. Feign polite interest in a story you've heard a thousand times and quietly leave as soon as you can. Don't take sides -- they're all probably in the wrong.

As a daughter you might be in line for some inheritance. Pay for a decent lawyer and let the lawyer handle things, and you refer everything to the lawyer (that's why you're paying a lawyer). If asked why you politely say "I wanted to be certain everyone and everything was done right." Don't fight the will (if any) but don't fold up like a cheap chair, either. The lawyer's fees will be worth the lack of hassle you'll have, and I know about that.

What has happened is past. Don't let it carry into the future. If they never speak to you again, so be it, but they are probably aware of situation and may be trying to "make the most" of it in whatever way best suits them.

Sticking my neck out and asking for support feels, gosh,
humiliating somehow, but here goes.

Estrangement from my family of origin
has been a necessary compromise
after an upbringing complicated by abuse and trauma.

Last year one parent died.
This year the remaining parent is suicidal: at least making the threats.

There's a lot that I don't know because I am keeping my distance.
However this year turns out,
pressure is being brought to bear, and that will continue.
One reason for this is that there are legalities and estate planning
all mixed up in the oldest generation passing away.
A more obvious reason is that nobody lets go in this family of origin.
One grandparent of mine died thirty-five years ago
with lasting legal and financial consequences,
and thirty-five years later
some people have their minds firmly closed to the notion
that things might be different now.
You get the idea?

I seriously can't predict what's coming,
but I dread the worst. Thanks for listening.

I went to my massage therapist today and she asked what the red dots on my arms were.

An hour after the massage therapy I had an appointment with my dermatologist. He said, "Strep psoriasis" and ordered a corticosteroid cream, twice a day for fourteen days and call then if it's not any better.

Well, it's annoying. Still, it could be a lot worse. No, no itching or anything. Just dry skin and red dots.

Had good news yesterday when we saw Billy' s consultant he said his blood counts were excellent and he will see us again in 4 months, still on the trial so regular appointments continue. He also told us that the research into the chemotherapy that has been done in the USA shows that the results for patients like Billy can be very positive and they can be in remission for a long time, year 5 now so fingers crossed.I have said before that the NHS treatment in our local hospital has been incredible and I am so sad when they get a bad press, just takes one bad Apple!

Went into Colchester town for shopping and celebration lunch, it was pouring down with rain and as we went into one shop the marble floor was wet and I went flying and today I am in bed with a very painfull knee and stiff back and hip!! Lucky I didnt need to return to the hospital, nothing broken except my dignity??

I should be tackling the mountain of ironing but enjoying a lie down,cup of tea and good book.

I had a long conversation with Dean that bowled me over with his knowledge of receptors, dopamine and addiction. Mainly his insight rivals some of the most insightful folks here. Real gritty and tangible progress is being made without the blame games that plague our infantile Congress.

Internet Addiction is in most cases simply abuse (6.5 hours a day) but in cases where it alters sleep cycles it is a moderate addiction. It become a serious health hazard when withdraw from real life and depression occurs. As with any behavioral addiction there is little research and a large skeptical suspicion of its existence. The creators of the games or platforms are not going to take responsibility.

What is being thrown at the problem are anti-depressants. You can look at the increase in prescriptions in the UK but that is only anecdotal. The number of kids worldwide who are seriously depressed from an addiction to digital heroin may be as high as 30 million.

The emergent problem is a deliberate attempt to addict for profit and is only 9 years old. What will it be like in 15 or 20 years?

Physically the problem coincides with up to a 8% loss in connective white fiber tissue. It can be restored. Time can not.

The symptoms present in different ways in certain cultures, some hideous and some just sad.

The mystery in plain sight is solved. Dean has what 50 million other kids get in the world but recovery is possible. He has IGA specifically. I have been complicit in causing his depression and withdrawal from life. I have been giving him heroin for 10 years,
digital heroin.

Neurological resets take up to two months but to recover the 8% of lost white fiber connections beneath his brain's grey matter will take much longer, perhaps a lifetime.
