It's good to read your update, Nigel. Worlds of change for you, yes indeed!

As for "Lyrics & Poems, whilst sharing many similarities, are not the same thing at all"; I agree, yet I also suspect that some of your poems might well be "convertible" to excellent lyrics in the hands of a trusted fellow songwriter. Worth some thought, perhaps. It can be daunting to hand off your poem-child (over which you've lovingly labored/laboured.) It's also a delight when you find someone with whom you can collaborate to make a song.

Sail on!

it certainly is the sort of update that encourages.

i was a poet before being a songwriter.the snippet i posted awhiles back became a song-my first,i think.i just set it to a medium fast 12 bar.i was a complete non singer at the time.i must admit some surprise that you have,nt done something set to song.be that as it may;you certainly compensate by some impressive instrumental music.

The one person with whom I could've collaborated, writing songs, died from a brain tumour eight years ago.Almost certainly, one of the most talented & successful composers of film & TV Music of whom you've never heard. His name was Ian Hughes. I played guitar for him on many recording sessions, from simple demos for aspiring 'stars' to full-blown orchestral scores destined for the silver screen or TV. We did write one song together (I'm sure I've mentioned this in an earlier post). It was for the Eurovision Song Contest, but didn't make the cut. I still have our original, 'work in progress' cassette, but nothing on which to play it!
Pete, it surprises me too! But I think I probably work better when I keep Poetry & Instrumental Music as separate entities. In truth, they both satisfy different needs within me.
Maeve, you're so right. Handing over my 'poem-child' to the safe keeping of a, another would be something like taking a young son or daughter to their first day at school & letting them go in at the gates.
It's beautifully warm & sunny here in London & the forecast is set fair for Sunday too, which is the best possible news because it's Jane's Birthday. It will be lovely if we can eat, drink & mingle, 'alfresco'.
So good to read your comments...so good to feel you near.
Wishing you all a sunny weekend too,
      With Love,
                     Nigel & Ann.

Jane's birthday could not have been a happier day. The sun shone; we DID get to eat & drink alfresco. Cakes were cut, candles were blown out, brief speeches of thanks attempted, slightly hampered by tears. Fortunately, she has a large garden, because the number of people dropping by to wish her well must have topped sixty at least. A truly wonderful day for so many reasons. I would have loved for all of you to have been there.
Thank you for your Good Wishes,
                      With Love,

So glad Jane had a very Happy Birthday, the sun shone and it was a beautiful day here too, so belated Birthday greetings from Billy and me xxx
Its our grandaughter Bunny's 6th birthday this weekend, and I am making cupcakes for the 30 children in her class who are invited to her party this weekend! Goodness how times have changed, a childrens entertainer has been booked( a young man aged 5 has said he has seen him before and he is rubbish!!)The Church hall booked, balloons and streamers, party plates and goody bags purchased! The stress of it all for the mummy and daddy! My memories of my seventh Birthday, a table of six little friends in grandma's garden, jam sandwiches, victoria sandwich cake and home made lemonade, lovely!!

love to you and Ann ,Nigel

Such good news......I hate to bring a downer but I wonder if you all might hold a thought for another Mudcatter that many of you know. Mrrzy has been around the 'Cat for a long time, a Village regular. Some of you maight be aware that she lost her Mom recently, a holocaust survivor. What you might not know is that Mrrzy lost her father in the Lebanon embassy bombing in 1979.

On top of her Mom's death we now have the middle east exploding with the deaths of embassy personnel. Its hard to go through the anniversay of her Dad's death for her I know but to have this happening has got to bring back unwanted memories.

Hold a good thought for her. I sent her a note and you may or may not wish to do the same. She hasn't posted since the 8th.

Many thanks all you good people!

Thanks, Rum & Sandra. The spelling of 'Olde Pharte' is particularly appropriate when you take into account the historical side of my early days in Folk Music. And 'One-off Admirable Personalities'...well, I feel I hardly deserve such grandeur, but will, nevertheless, accept it most graciously.
Ann & I are off out this evening to sample the delights of a very good, local, Chinese Restaurant. Got to keep my eye on the carbs & added sugar, but I'm not expecting that to spoil my evening one jot!

Hope your Birthday was a Happy and contented day Nigel,
It has taken me a week to get over the shock of the Birthday party for Bunny our Grandaughter!Goodness my respect for teachers has gone up 100%!!Do all little boys just "run"? Maybe the disco was the wrong move to start the afternoon, also the balloons loose on the floor, well it started everything with a bang!!As for the tea, what a mixture , everything on one plate savoury, cupcakes, sausages, chiocolate! Oh well I guess it all goes down the same way.
Magic Marvo lived up to his name, Magic and marvolous, he had control of the children from the start, Bunny made a wonderful assistant and was very shocked that she has magic "blow" and could mend the rope that was cut in half just by closing her eyes and blowing on it.
Maybe giving the boys balloon swords was a mistake but the party was over by then and Magic Marvo probably thought the mothers would go home and not say yes to the millionth cup of tea that i was making for the helpers!!
A good time was had by all the children, but mummy and I needed a Gin and Tonic before bedtime!Happoy days
Wendy xx

need some healing thoughts for Billy tonight,he is in Colchester Hospital with a fever, chest infection due to being neutropenic ( sorry if spelling is wrong) three weeks since his chemo and we were feeling quite positive. But he came home this afternoon feeling really umwell.
We also look after my mother who is 89 and has dementia, she came to live with us when my father died eighteen months ago,so I had to leave her with a neighbour while I drove Billy to the hospital.
Spent five hours at the hospital and have just got home, need to clone myself so I can be in both places at once!!
rant over,so glad the concert went well at The House Nigel, will look forward to seeing you on the Beeb.
love to all

Nigel, we have not heard from you all week, I do hope this means you have been resting and are feeling better ,it sounda like the concert went very well, but as you were unwell during the week before it must have been very stressful! It is a beautiful sunny morning here at the coast so I am sending sunny thoughts to London :-)

Billy is still in hospital, unlikely to be home before Monday, he is very weak and feels faint if he gets out of bed,but the staff at Colchester General are wonderful, I cannot praise them enough! They get so many people finding fault, all I can say is even after a twelve hour shift(and often longer) the nurses are still smiling and incredibly kind. Sounds selfish but I feel less worried when he is being so well looked after, I feel useless when he is unwell at home!

One good thing coming out of this is Mother seems to have switched on! Not saying the dementia is improoved but she seems to be aware that I am having a bad time and is less withdrawn and asks if she can help in any way!! Every cloud has a silver lining!!

Sailing on

much love Wendy xx

Apologies to everyone for my silence. After last weekend's gig, Ann & I travelled down to a remote part of South-West England for a few days R&R...no internet...no mobile phone service, that type of remote! Much to read since I last posted & clearly it is Wendy & Billy who are most in need of our Love & Support.
One of the great strengths of this thread is the shared ownership. It doesn't matter if me or anyone else can't post for a few days, there are always plenty of other crew members on deck, ready, willing & able to keep us on course. I'm very grateful for Wendy's thanks, but as I've said before, I view the thread as 'ours', rather than 'mine', so I want to thank Wendy too.
And to all of you aboard The Rainbow, my heartfelt thanks for your loyalty; for your love & care; your selflessness when you too have had more than enough with which to contend. You are a rare & precious group with whom to sail through Life's stormy waters.
    With Love to you All,

Thank you to all the crew who have been so kind and helped me get through a horrid week. So now I am ready to be here for all of you!

much love
Wendy xx
