What could we say, indeed.

Those of us who have first-hand experience with both trauma and grief, will remember occasions when trauma blended with grief, and the blend was so intense as to make the whole more than the sum of its parts. It really defies description, the feeling is a devastation.

Our simply being present for the bereaved survivor, is, already, something that will make itself felt. Our presence cannot change what brought the person to this pass. And projecting a future outcome does only so much, and no more. Being present with the grieving survivor, respecting the mourning that must be experienced now -- this we can do, and our actions of being and doing must speak for us.

I don't have anything novel and original to say, but I mean sincerely what I say. Hope our Mudcat member/colleague knows that he is not alone at this time.

He (and I can guess who) is in my thoughts and aura of positive energy.

The party went well, the honoree was indeed surprised. His grandson, the officer, was there as was his 89 year old brother in law from DC and his wife. Carlos said that there WILL be a 90th birthday party in Maryland next year to honor is BIL and he will be there.

One of the things on display was the presentation case (about 20 x 20 inches) of Carlos' bronze star medal (with V for valor) and the documents that go with it. "How," said someone, "did they get that here without you noticing it was missing?" "They stole it," replied Carlos. Actually, they got him out of the house and on the way to the party and then someone went back for it.

The day after tomorrow I fly to Illinois and will be gone most of November. Yes, Pat is coming out about eight days later.

Oh, yes. Driving to and from Reno. Pat insisted on "doing her share" both ways. So much for eye surgery. She has a post-op appointment tomorrow.

Good thoughts tonight, please, for a good friend and mudcatter who hasn't posted in a long time. He found his lovely and troubled daughter dead in her room tonight. Lost his wife just a few years ago to a long term illness. Without his permission, I won't name him, but I know this crew doesn't need names to hold people close on tempest tossed seas.

Keberoxu, Sev's friend Phil passed away a year ago. We remembered him at this year's Getaway - all our ID badges had Phil's photo on them and songs were sung in his memory. Lonesome EJ wrote a song after Phil passed called Any Friend of Hank's in Phil's honor and he played it at the Saturday night concert.

Rap, minutes ago public television showed a promo for American Experience. On Nov. 1 the episode will be about the Battle of Chosin! That's the date for it in Boston, anyway. Check your local listings because Providence usually airs programs after they've been viewed in Boston. In my part of RI, I can watch broadcasts from both cities. If I hadn't read your recent post, I wouldn't have known of your family connection to that battle.

Today my wife had the cataract removed from her right eye and that was the last one. Tomorrow, immediately after the post op appointment, we drive to Reno for the 90th birthday party for her uncle.

Did I say "we"? Well, after 43 years of marriage "I" and "we" mean pretty much the same thing.

(Her uncle joined the US Coast Guard at 14(!) and then the Marines. He made the long walk back from the Chosin Reservoir.)

Nigel, that was supposed to be MGA for Music Guardian Angel! Auto-correct must have changed it! I use MA often as the abbreviation for my neighboring state of Massachusetts, so I may have "taught" that to auto-correct. I'm glad you got a chuckle out of it, anyway.

Thank you very much, CL. Unfortunately the Tidido link is also not UK friendly, but I found a performance of 'Toward' on YouTube...not by Gordon Bok, but an iffy cover. The lyrics link DID work...HOORAH! & compensated for the lack-lustre cover. It is a beautiful song, perfectly judged by Janie. I posted above about "...regional rights", that should be "...territorial rights", something about which I have personal experience. Only about one third of my published guitar arrangements appear on my website, the remainder languish in a 'territorial rights black hole'. Very frustrating, but something about which I can do nothing.
                                                                   Musically,
                                                                                  Nigel.

Dean, pound to a penny, copyright & particularly regional rights are the reason for the song's omission. I just knew it had to be 'right song, right time'...Janie's choices are always impeccable.

Awww, who would block access to that song; I would make a substantial bet that none of the trio were behind it. That song is so beautiful musically that it would be hard to resist even if the lyric were an ode to Donald Trump instead of the actual gentle words of encouragement. I've been hooked on it for years.

Janie, unfortunately 'Turning Toward the Morning' is unavailable on UK YouTube. I'm betting we're missing out on something special.

Mysha, thank you for underscoring gnu's post. You signed off with: BFN, which took me straight back to my childhood when TTFN (ta- ta for now) was in common usage.

Dear Donuel, state schools in the UK are not without their faults & inconsistencies, but based on my own experience, a 180 page folder of 'concerns' would have almost certainly been included in an application for 'Statementing'...a process, once triggered, that provides extra, specialised help & support for the student in question. There are cost implications, so Statementing is a rigorous & often protracted process, but once in place, it can transform that student's life. I was profoundly angered to read that Dean was punished in such an insidious way, rather than receiving the help & understanding he needed. To use your words, dignity & respect were conspicuous by their absence.
Frustrated by my inability to help in any concrete way, I nevertheless offer my experience & training unreservedly,
                                                         Nigel.

Talked to the doctor and there should not so much as a bump in the road. I probably would have preferred a conspiracy theory to rail against but life is full of random events and authority often has an unfriendly minority.

The school has a 180 page folder in small font describing Dean's unwillingness to participate. Not in the folder is the passive aggressive punishment he received for not participating. If the same care and effort had been given dean in the form of a friend who could treat him with respect and dignity we would be in a different place now.

Still here, but recently on Jane's Rainbow, I've been taking the PM route.
Wendy, very pleased to read about BB's progress. Well done everyone at Colchester!
I echo other folk's comments about Donuel & Dean's situation...some of us should get our heads together & write a guide as to how to deal with unhelpful medical professionals (& vice principals who make derogatory comments).
We have some good news to share. Ann has finally been discharged from the breast cancer clinic...a ten year haul, but to hear the words: "We don't need to see you again", ten years seemed to evaporate in a trice.
                                                 Much love to you all,

To my knowledge a compounding Pharmacy can be entirely closed for failing an inspection but to have only one specific medicine banned while remaining open is very odd.(?) I should mention a Vice principal also made a derogatory comment regarding Dean's treatment.
My wife was oblivious to these machinations so coincidence or my fertile imagination may still be in play.

After the second treatment we are once again in limbo and a low information zone. Just today we learned the compounding pharmacy stopped filling prescriptions the very day we called to have it filled. I suspect the nurse Cratchet type attendance officer who called social services, SS then called and insisted she also be present at a hastily called school meeting both had something to do with the cessation of treatment. that is only an unsubstantiated guess. This is the same woman who openly criticized us for not seeking more aggressive therapy. Now she believes Dean's treatment is akin to chemical shock therapy. But that is the problem with suspicion. Adversaries by intention or accident do not tell you what they are thinking and I am more sensitive to behavioral dynamics than my wife who relies only upon what is actually said. So Dean has opened up quite a bit more but now is in limbo until we hear what our alternatives are from the doctor.

My opinion of busy body do gooders with power in my past probably colors my suspicions but I will keep an open mind and press on.
The best cure for worry is always more information.

Push back from the powers that be to new ideas, has always been my bailiwick. Dean will persevere I am sure.

Only a few days ago, Mudcatter Keith A from Hertford refreshed his own "chemotherapy" thread, having finally come up for air, so to speak, after his September treatments. His thread is inactive now, however this thread is certainly inclusive enough for all of us thinking of him.

And he had good news, that his better half's treatment had resulted in a cancer-free situation today. Keith's is rather worse, but his treatment continues and we can continue keeping him in our thoughts and prayers.
