Wendy. Thanks. As we all know, laughter is the best medicine. So, from a Facebook post... I was excited all to pieces when Dad said we were going to visit Yogi Berra (famous Yankee baseball catcher) at his cottage on Lake Ontario. I was 5 years old. I was introduced and said, "You're not Yogi Bear!" I was even more upset when everyone started laughing.

Most fortunate of men am I that I should have your love & friendship. I'm overwhelmed, lost for words, but deeply grateful.
Pete's right, the sight loss is normally a very gradual deterioration, often taking several years before one has to face up to things like quitting driving. My hearing loss seems determined to push ahead, regardless. The most recent audiogram showed moderate to severe loss over a wide range of frequencies, taking account of my music activities. Ageing plays it's part, but most of the damage has been caused by steroids. Three years of taking steroids (Prednisolone) for Polymyalgia Rheumatica has caused Type 2 Diabetes, Osteopenia & Fatty Liver Disease. For the sake of completeness,I may as well throw Dystonia & an Anxiety Disorder into the mix too, although I can't blame Prednisolone for them.

I've been avoiding this sort of 'medical rant' for ages, but I'm mad as hell at the irreversible damage caused by the steroids. I can't hold it in any longer.
With Love to you all, my Dear, Loyal Friends,
                                                                         Nigel.

Nigel, you certainly have my long-distance support & mojo!

You're always here for others, and when you give so freely, it feels bad to ask for anything. You have the right to do that, and everybody who reads this thread will, I'm sure, agree. Asking is just fine. You're a good man, and I hope your health (and everything else) goes as well as it possibly can.

Wendy, I'm sorry you had to go through that with your brother before you got the results you were seeking. I hope the bungalow sells quickly to the interested person or someone else.
Good news about BB's job!

Nigel, I am sorry you are facing these challenges. Eye and ear mojo of course from me!

My Dear Wendy, your courage & fortitude in the face of adversity never ceases to amaze me. From where did you find the strength to remain calm in such a stressful, distressing situation? You truly are a wonder! The news about BB's job is something good & positive amongst a sea of troubles.

Janie, two voices in harmony, one guitar & a beautiful song. Might the pearls be our 'pearls of wisdom' to which we frequently turn?

Need some support myself. My Diabetes, even though well controlled, is beginning to affect my eyesight & hearing. Early days yet, but the conditions are irreversible & progressive. I've met with the Doctors concerned & they are monitoring my situation closely. Am I worried? Yes. Am I desperate? No, not yet, there is much I can do myself by paying even closer attention to my GL diet in combination with medication. Some ear & eye mojo would be greatly appreciated,
                              With Love,
                                             Nigel.

Well,......

Had THE most dreadful hour with the brother Monday evening, very upsetting, he was vile, some of the things he said I cannot repeat, however I kept calm and just repeated " we have to sell mums bungalow"

result........... getting valuation today and giving the tenant notice, the estate agent even "might" have a buyer in mind, fingers crossed.

Very sad that he has said things that can never be forgotten, I am always quick to forgive however Billy is very angry that I have been hurt.

Good news BB has started a new job, fund raising for a hospice, I think three months of retirement was too much and it is good for him to get away from the house at the moment.

Sailing on

much love to all

I'm very relieved to hear that 'Arthur', whilst being a nuisance, doesn't seem to have left a trail of devastation in his wake. Quite what King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table would have made of it, I really can't imagine! (Plenty of opportunities here for 'Arthurian jokes', but I can't string anything together...need some inSPAWation).

Rumanci, great to hear from you. Just knowing that you're there, thinking, reading, keeping us close in your thoughts...that means a lot to me personally & to everyone else, I'm sure.

Hurricanes? We don't need no stinking hurricanes.

Can't recall the movie that 'line' is from. ?

I use the Canadian Hurricane Centre and the US National Hurricane Center. The Canuck one is better, IMO, but the US one is good though more 'complicated'.

Okay, one hurricane down. Let's hope it's the only one this season.

Rain? I had to clean the covers on two catch basins out front that were clogged with (ignorant) peoples lawn clippings and also with leaves and small branches. I had two huge snow shovelfulls* to dump in the compost pile. I shall have (polite) words with the fellow across the way and ask him to send his clippings lawn side or sweep them up.

I enjoyed it. When I saw on the radar that the rain was over, I flung open the windows and Mum Nature serenaded me to sleep with the wind in the trees. B**** woke me up a few times too but 'bad/good' eh?

Common usage here but it's the first time I ever saw it in print. Shovel fulls. Nope. Shovelfuls? Aha! Thanks spell checker.

Our NC coast handled it pretty well. I was hoping for some rain from it, but it was so small in diameter the rain bands didn't reach here. Earliest date for a hurricane to come ashore on the NC coast since they started keeping records official records, in the mid 1800's. However, there are unofficial records that indicate such storms have occasionally hit the NC coast as early as June.

All good in Moncton. Some trees down. But, not far to the NW, about 100 km, many without power... 50,000 in Fredericton alone.

This is not an unusual summer (or winter storm) for here. 90 kph NE is seldom a problem in my city.

Storm 'Arthur' seems to have been largely ignored by the UK media. Is everyone out there ok? Several of you appear to have been in it's path, or close by. Is this kind of storm a rarity for July? We've had some heavy rain & lightening, but short-lived & not destructive, unless, of course, you're unlucky enough to get struck!

We're glad your mum weathered (!) the stormlet, gnu. We only had four inches of rain and a lot of gusty wind here. All of the Meyers lemons and most of the lemon flowers stayed attached though. The snail population is the highest we've seen in 16 years or so...our little bantams have tried hard to gobble them all up.

Some of our robin families are raising their third, possibly fourth broods of the season. I've planted four varieties of tatties/spuds/potatoes layered in half whiskey/whisky barrels due to the high rainfall this spring, and the blight-resistant Yukon Gems will at last go into the larger veg garden hoping most of the heavy rain is behind us.

So sorry to be more absent than active on duty here, folks. Life is challenging- has been for some time. I am always interested in what's going on with all of you but find it hard to post even when I'm home.

As gnu often says, Thoughts and Prayers are ongoing for all.

Maeve

Well, that's good to hear! My friend is all right too, so far - if the storm heads north up the Bay of Fundy it will impact on them, but so far it's just rain.

I use a 432g box of cake mix with two eggs and 75 ml of oil. For the people way behind, the Imperial measures are One Betty Crocker, 2 eggs, 1/3 cup oil.

I have a carrot cake mix (spice cake preferred) so I need to add ginger. I now have it on good authority that one should try a 1/4 tsp in the first batch. (Doesn't seem to me it will be enough but I would hate to serve up ginger-ginger carrot cake cookies to Mum.

Also, Belgium and the Nether Regions will win today. I assume this is because the are counties Mum visited (and loved) while my old man was stationed in Germany with the RCAF.

Thanks... The bloody hurricane has kinda stalled. Looking at the various radar sites, I find Arthur to be the oddest storm I have ever seen on radar. Northern half of Maine and all of NB but NOwhere else??? Not bad here but I see one helluva lotta rain in Maine. It's pretty windy but the wind is forecast for this evening. 60 with gusts to 90 kph so it ain't bad.

Even though it's not going to be bad, Mum is upset that it could get worse than it is. I try to calm her down with calls and updates but she is still on edge. It gets to the point that if I don't call enough or call too often, she gets agitated so I try to find reasons for contact. Earlier, I paid some bills and brought them to her. I changed plans in the supper menu on a ruse of the burger still being too frozen. I shall call again in a while and ask her about a cookie recipe, ask her who she thinks will win in the World Cup today... etc.

I echo Nigel and add I Hope all on the Eastern Seaboard stay safe as Arthur is packing a punch. Supposed to be 'not bad' here with winds only up to 90km. Lots of rain, tho. Temps in the high teens so I'll be baking Swedish Meatballs and cookies for Mum (I don't do sweet stuff). Been over 40H (Humidex) here for several days so the break will be nice.

Bless all.

Being aware of the 'In Memoriam' thread & not wishing to tread on anyone's toes & with some hesitation:
"Please lay a place at the table for Ian H., composer, arranger, conductor, song-writing partner & dearest friend. Ian & I worked together on many music projects, large & small. He was a fine pianist, but often consulted me about guitar matters. Ian composed for Film & TV in Europe & the UK, but the big Hollywood break, tantalisingly close on several occasions, never actually came to fruition. I miss his friendship; I miss the endless discussions about the finer points of arranging & orchestration. I miss the unfailing encouragement he gave me when I was struggling with my own writing. His premature death, some nine years ago, leaves an unfillable void. I loved him very much".

All of us will have had one of those special people in our lives: Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Friend, Teacher, Work Colleague, someone we've never actually met but by whom we have been profoundly touched. It's a lengthy list of possibilities.

Please say if you think "Please lay a place" is a daft idea...unnecessary...not wanted on voyage etc., etc.. With Spaw, Kat & Jane very fresh in my mind, I remembered earlier times & felt a need to write a few words about other individuals who have played an important part in my life. A personal means of expression...your comments/contributions are valued & invited.
                               With Love,

it aint so much the taste of tea
your spirit is renewed
so if you give such friendship
and if your heart is true
then someone in an evil day
will thank the Lord for you.

Can guess how much you wish you did not have to go the route that it appears is becoming necessary, Wendy. Breathing deeply along side of you, for what that is worth. Here along with the rest of the crew to take orders from you to help you as you set the uncertain course through stormy seas.

And always, the Rainbow can find a bit of calm water and fair winds with warm sun to shelter in when respite is needed. You are sailing with a true heart, and the crew is aboard.

Families can be so dang complicated!

Holding you, billybob, your mother and your brother in my thoughts.

Wendy, I'm sending more love and hugs and moral support. Keep standing up for yourself and for your mum. It won't be easy; it already is hard, but it must be done and you are the one who must do it. I am glad your husband is with you on all of this.

Thanks Nigel and all,

We had the meeting with the Social worker yesterday, she had already made her mind up which boxes to tick, although she has never spent more than a minute with mum! However I have to admit mum is borderline for this extra funding so I wasn't surprised that she turned us down. Regarding my brother if he refuses to agree to the sale of the bungalow I will have to go to the Court of protection to have him removed as POA. Very unpleasant and very involved. But, and it is a huge BUT, we have exhausted all mums savings and the care bills are mounting up at a frightening rate. My brother thinks I should give up my business and look after mum 24/7. The salon is my sanctuary and I only do part time hours (as you know by the time I spend at the beach hut,) but I do need to work for financial reasons as well as my sanity! I have to say that my "rock" Billy has been wonderful as usual but our " golden times" that we shouted about a few weeks ago seem all too few and far between.

Will need all hands on deck this evening for the next confrontation with my brother, haul away lads and lasses I need calmer waters,

much love and thanks

Wendy xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
