Pete, I just did a little looking back in this thread, I didn't read all of your posts about Tommy, but I read a few more. It helped because I am a relative newcomer here, so did not know about Tommy's myotonic dystrophy.

Also did not know that Tommy has been with you for over ten years, and for all of his teenage years, or that he was not expected to live to see the teenage years.

It's all very eye-opening and humbling for me.

My background has been in a family of origin where people have great physical resilience but they share emotional and psychological dysfunctions which few, if any, admit to or offer up for healing. Said another way, my family has a long history of people playing at being victims and martyrs, the hypochondriac sort, and often as not they outlive everyone else. Up close and in contact with them often, as in my childhood, what you witness is people draining each other.

So it is really humbling and edifying to see people giving to each other instead of taking from each other.
Sorry for going on about myself and my history this much.

Much gratitude for this thread and the hard-working humanity of those who keep this thread going.

Thanks . In answer to your question Nigel ,I'm sure you won't be surprised that I would say ultimately I believe it is God and my Christian faith. I would add that I believe His strength in my weakness is displayed by family and friends too , that send kind thoughts and offer prayers , not the least of which being the crew of this fine ship.                         Tommy seems better today than yesterday , and though we've been told again not to expect him to live another year , we don't give up hope .            Blessings.          Pete.

Pete, the news about Tommy has given my Sunday morning the something it was lacking...hope. That he is well enough to return home is such an achievement. Where do you all get the strength from?

Tommy has got through it and is now home . However his left lung is still down , but he is looking pretty well , though still weak . The medics didn't expect him to survive and they have warned us that they don't expect the lung to heal , reminding us again that it's in the last stages. But we have heard that before ,and though we have increased care to give him , he is still with us . Thanks again for the prayers and well wishes offered            Blessings.    Pete

It's the little things that surprise us by how much they hurt, ranger1. Is there a child in your life, niece or nephew perhaps, for whom you can make a card and send with cinnamon red hots? If you gran's cards were elaborate, you can make a simple one. I've folded red card stock in half and cut the outline of one side of a heart so that when unfolded it is a whole heart. I'm glad you have Beau to hug when you feel sad.

Monday was a year from when my grandmother passed. It also hit me that there will be no hand-made Valentine's Day card and package of cinnamon red hots in the mail for me, either. It's always the little things, isn't it?

Oh Pete. Holding Tommy close in my heart.

Rap and Pat. Keep healing. Probably should not attempt sled riding just now.

Maeve, may it be cozy inside.

Went to PT for the ulnar nerve this morning. Not sure the PT or the splint is gonna help, but won't hurt, and as I do research, leaning away from surgery even if the PT doesn't help at all. It isn't clear at all that surgery has more than a 50% chance of being helpful, and is apparently very painful with a long recovery time, whether it helps or not.

Did some work in the yard today. Not a lot, but some. Got new hand clippers for Christmas, plus had done some oiling, cleaning, sharpening of larger clippers so they work better and require less hand strength. The right hand tools, and well-maintained tools make a difference. Plus it was a good leg day. The old gray mare ain't what she used to be, but still plugging along.

Rapparee, having watched the inauguration as a concerned bystander, I find myself wishing I had spent the time with a new cooktop on which I could've cooked a similar mouthwatering feast. A delicious meal vs. listening to DT...that's a no-brainer for me! I wish you many more culinary delights, courtesy of your new gas stove,

Since I have never watched or listened to an inauguration before, my record stands unbroken. Instead, I cooked dinner the new cooktop. Installation was completed yesterday and now I have to learn to cook on a gas stove again.

Dinner was carrots and parsnips in a butter/honey/mustard sauce, green beans, and very thin pork tenderloins seasoned with very little salt and a bit of pepper. Dessert was fresh strawberries with creme fraiche served on slices of toasted pound cake.

Donuel, ChanteyLass is spot on regarding T2 Diabetes. Mine is controlled by medication (Metformin) & diet. I have a six-monthly foot checkup & Hba1c blood test plus an annual eye test for Retinal Neuropathy. Despite being 'well controlled', T2D has caused capillary damage & nerve damage in my feet. I too indulged over the holidays & suffered as a result. To use your own words: "It's time to get...serious over diet". I can't emphasise the importance of those words enough. There will come a time when my tablets will have be replaced by Insulin. I want that moment to be as far away in the future as possible. Please PM me if you want to discuss T2D in more detail. I'm not a doctor, just a patient who was diagnosed a fair few years ago. I applaud your decision to get Dean's sugar tested.
               Wishing you both good health,
                                                                Nigel.

Nigel, I also refer to our new president as DT when I'm not calling him "that man." I'm trying to avoid actual name-calling, but it's hard! I have avoided the tv all day but I am enjoying the classical music radio station near me.

Donuel, T2 diabetes is a progressive disease, and it's inconsistent and unpredictable. Some days I think I've done everything--diet, exercise--right, but in the morning my fasting glucose is high. Other days I know I've overindulged in the wrong foods, but the next morning my glucose is fine. I know eventually I'll need meds and suspect that an A1c will soon indicate that. What I'm saying is, don't beat yourself up. (Though I probably will when it's my turn. It's much easier to give advice to others!)

With type 2 I was hoping diabetes drugs would forgive the indulgences of the holidays. The doctor called me today over my blood test and ordered me to come in for immediate insulin treatment.

Its time to get skinny and serious over diet. I still have cargo to throw overboard to stay afloat longer. So far so good.

Upon starting a 15 ft. painting called 'equinox' a remarkable thing happened. My eyes became as sharp clear and acute as when I was 20.
This can happen with Fuch syndrome but is always in variable flux.
That night I could see the silhouette of people in high rise windows 3/4 of a mile away.

I am getting Dean a sugar test.

Well, the day has arrived...is America & possibly a sizeable chunk of the rest of the planet on the verge of four years of the 'DTs'? (Intentional play on words) or could we be pleasantly surprised? Ann & I will be glued to our TV at 15.00 hrs (UK) to watch the inauguration. A final thought, 'Jane's Rainbow' has unlimited capacity, so do come aboard if it's all getting too much!
                                           Love & fingers crossed,

Well, you see, higher dosages of ibuprofen are prescription-only in the US. That is, 400 mg or higher. Of course, you can always take two 200 mg tablets, but (just theoretical, you understand) if someone was in Europe it might be possible to obtain higher doses per tablet and bring them into the US. One's husband might also have specifically asked a surgeon after a knee surgery to prescribe 800 mg ibuprofen instead of, say, Tylenol with codeine. Mind you, this is all supposition because you're not supposed to do those things.

An electrician is coming tomorrow to begin the installation of a new gas cooktop.   The electric one we have lived with for thirteen years is down to one heating unit that works pretty well, one that sometimes works as it should, and two that don't work at all. We are moving from electric to natural gas and the cooktop area is being redone. A new exhaust fan, surround, light, and all. This was all planned to happen before Christmas, of course.

Recovering? "A consummation devoutly to be wished!" I hope that she gets in to see a doctor soon about the aftereffects of the fall. I'm doing better, I think.
