In four hours, I will be saying goodbye to Bandit, my loyal canine buddy of the last nine and a half years. He wasn't a young dog when I adopted him, and now old age has caught up with my boy. I knew this day was coming, watched as it slip towards me at glacial speed for about the last year, telling myself I would do the right thing when his bad days started to outnumber the good ones. I kept that promise and made the dreaded phone call yesterday. I know it's the right thing to do, but it sure felt like I was plotting his execution.

We gave the condemned a last meal of raw hamburger, a can of dog food (he'd always been content with kibble and the occasional can of food that the cat would turn her nose up at), and a bowl of vanilla ice cream. As I set my purchases down on the counter at the grocery store I work at in the winter, the cashier (and my good friend) looked at what I had, looked at me and said "Please tell me this isn't what I think it is." She understood when I told her it was time, and offered to drive me today. I'd already called my mom, who will be going with me, but I appreciated the offer. My next-door neighbor made the same offer when I got home. I am surrounded by good people.

Bandit quite enjoyed all his goodies, by the way.

At 0545 MDT, the day after tomorrow, I am supposed to arrive at the hospital for a partial (or full, depends on what they find inside) replacement of my right knee.

That's ungodly early, but I think I can get some sleep after I get there.

I'll be in for two nights.

It is one thing to suffer, yourself, and to need support.
It is another, it seems to me, to watch the suffering of a loved one, and to feel powerless about it.
Thankfully there is room, and comfort, for both here.

Donuel, I was deeply moved by your intensely personal post. Addiction in all it's forms is difficult to treat, relying, as I'm sure you're aware on the individual acknowledging they have a problem & then engaging in a treatment program. I speak from the standpoint of my own addiction to alcohol & latterly, as a psychotherapist, working with addicted adolescents. 'Internet addiction' is a relatively new phenomenon, but just as destructive, nonetheless. In the UK, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is often the first choice from the 'talking therapies' & available on the NHS.
If you were able to get your youngest to see a CBT professional, both he & your Family might find the help & support you so desperately need. Addiction is not confined to the addict alone. Family & Friends also have their own related issues with which to deal. I send you every good wish in your quest for a solution.
                                                    With Love,
                                                                     Nigel.

I guess this thread wasn't here when Mudcat member "frug" posted about the medical life-and-death crisis in his family five years ago; now that member started a new thread to report back in this year.

It can be seen that even before this thread was started, this community was in place, in order to be something greater than the total sum of its parts. More power to the Rainbow thread and all that it stands for.

Turning my eyes outward I see the conundrum of waiting and worrying.
It has a tendency to spiral out of control sometimes. A trick to counter all that is to take all the things that exist in the universe and make it a denominator, then put the one or two bad things on top as the numerator. You've really cut that worry down to size.

I remember how scared I was of deep water as a kid. I had a dream of a Leprechaun figure sitting at the bottom of the pool, clay pipe and all.
He calmly watched me as I sank to he bottom desperate for air. He said in his Irish brogue "you know you used to breathe the water". I shook my head no. "Try it". I couldn't hold my breathe anymore so I took a slow breath of water. "see, it works". He said he had to go and vanished.
I never had a fear of water again.

Sure it was silly nonsense that I basically told myself but it worked.
Years later this what I did for a living as a hypnotist.

I helped my older son when he was targeted by Internet bullies to kill himself. We invoked a mental journey across a desert and he became immune to all bullies. But I have yet to reach my youngest in any way shape or form and he remains virtually bed ridden. If he had a dreaded disease he would probably have all sorts of support but instead he is an island without wind or trees. He supports one thing and that is his internet and gaming addiction.

I think a support group of internet addicts is needed. But will he help himself. So far he won't.

Still thinking of Ann and Nigel, positive healing thoughts.

Our little granddaughter , Bunny, had to have an MRI on Monday morning, she is nearly 10 but has had hearing loss since birth, she wears hearing aids and is doing remarkably at school, straight "A"s in her latest school reports. The MRI is to determine why she if deaf and if there is anything that can be done? She was very brave but wanted daddy to stay with her and hold her feet while she had the scan. Daddy held her feet but was very worried that, as he had to remove his belt, his trousers might fall down!
Bunny found this very funny.......ever cloud has a silver lining!!

much love

Nigel, here's a link to data on Grand Teton. But there are many other climbs there as well; here are those in Grand Teton National Park. Almost all (95%) of the climbs in Yellowstone are actually up-hill hiking. However, the Wind River Range and the Absaroka Range is rarely climbed. Or just visit here and get involved in the Pocatello Pump. Here's the latest PDF of the Massacre Rocks Climbing Guide. And there's always City of Rocks.

There's lots of climbing around here. Maybe after my knee operation on August 10 I can start doing some!

Rapparee, 'The Tetons' look mouthwateringly tempting. The highest peak in Snowdonia is 'Snowdon' at just over 3000' & in Scotland, 'Ben Nevis' rises to just over 4000', so 'The Tetons' would require a different approach. When I was climbing regularly, the highest difficulty grade I achieved was E2 (for a single pitch climb). Are 'The Tetons' considered technical or friendly? All of this is completely academic, because I climb only in my dreams! Nevertheless, I can't forget the satisfaction of safely gaining a summit...& then having to prepare for the inevitable decent!
Thanks for stirring up many exciting memories,
                                                                                           Nigel.

Thank you, everyone...it is so good to see your names, read your posts & feel your care & compassion. The procedure Ann had yesterday was investigative & proved inconclusive. An abdo CT scan is the next step. We had hoped for answers yesterday. Ann is remarkably chipper, considering the raft of tests, investigations & an op. she's had to endure since May.

I'm grateful to the 'Mudelf' who, unbidden, corrected a typo for me the other day. Great to know that our technical welfare is in good hands too (-:

Nigel, I haven't been able to get onto Mudcat since before your post on the 17th. When I tried yesterday, I got the message that Mudcat was offline, so Max must have been repairing the site. Now it seems I have only one day to refocus my prayers, so of course I will. I hope the test goes smoothly and you have the results soon so that Ann will know how to proceed, with your loving support, of course.

I have been away for too long, but for very happy reasons. Firstly I have sat and read all the posts I have been missing and sending my love to all who have been ill and in pain or troubled in many ways.It si good to know that the Rainbow is sailing on with this caring crew.So much love aboard and wonderful people.

Much has happened over this spring and summer. One of my dearest cousins and best friend died and BB and I went to her funeral in Bristol, she had a loving family of four daughters and a son and many grandchildren who I am now in touch with almost daily. Her greatest joy was her family and indeed, she was responsible in keeping our cousins in touch and organised big family parties a task that I seem to have been delegated to continue ! I had a big Birthday in June an "O" (never mind the number before the O , I still never feel like a proper grown up, always thought I would be silver haired and wise, the hair is red and no wisdom at all) But any excuse for a family gathering , so this Saturday we are having a party , the marquee goes up on Thursday, the freezer is full of lasagne, cake and pudding making on Friday! *0 were invited and so far everyone is coming. My lovely friends of 45 years Skinners Rats are coming to play the music and we are having a barn dance!

For my Birthday treat BB took me to Scotland, what a beautiful country, the mountains and lochs, the islands, Rum, Mull, Skye and the peaceful Iona, and the joy of just us two sharing an adventure. WE found a folky radio station and sang our way in the car through the highlands.I am such a lucky, lucky girl!

So I am back on board ready for duty in the galley and I am here to stay.
Sailing on

much love Wendy xxx
