Spaw, I don't know where to start. That you should have had to endure all (and more) of the above beggars belief. That you have retained a positive, optimistic outlook on life is nothing short of miraculous. Your 'Litany', as you describe it, is also testament to the human body's ability to go catastrophically wrong & yet, with appropriate interventions, it gathers itself & the next phase of one's life begins. What you've written is not a 'ramble', it's a vividly personal account of one Man's triumph over adversity, written with honesty & openness & a candour of rare quality. 'Inspirational' is a word I reserve for very special occasions. Your post is truly Inspirational. I am deeply moved that you have involved me so intimately with your fears, your struggle & pain & your cry from the rooftops: "Damn ain't I lucky to be alive".
Kat, Gnu, Bruce, Spaw, my life is enriched by the ways you have chosen to live your lives.
       With Love & Gratitude,
                                          Nigel.

so sorry that now its you who are unwell Nigel, but you have been so supportive and careing of all of us, now it is your turn to be cosseted and pampered!I am glad your new GP is a proper family Dr, do you remember the good old days when the Dr knew all about you, your parents and grand parents, the GP who helped me into the world also was there for the birth of my mother! They knew all the history of past illnesses and certainly looked you in the eye ( no computer to distract from the person)We have been very lucky as our GP is a family friend and noticed when Billy first was ill that he "wasnt his usual self".
If you feel the need of some bracing sea air we are not far from you at Frinton on Sea, would love to make you and Ann a cup of tea at the beach hut!
Healing thoughts and love

Thanks for your kind words Nigel........and if you can I would certainly take Wenndy up on the tea! I know I would if I were there. This thread has taken on a life sort of like the long running "Mother Of All Threads" but for a far different reason.   Meetings in 3D of people in this group would indeed be sort of extra special.

Spaw's post is inspiring point blank. And, something stood out for me... "There have been so many studies done and knowledge accumulated over the years that they now are able to see and tell us how interactions of conditions often fit together and how things that used to be unnoticed are now linked. Now while that makes it scary when you have these things, it also makes them more readily dealt with by the medicos. And since you know you have them you can also do "right" things to help yourself."

Why? Well, because I have had a bad few months and I saw a doc yesterday ("walk-in-clinic" doc as mine is on holiday) who told me some stuff about my "stuff". A few things she said (English lass as it were) triggered me and I went surfing. Well SOB! I put things together and I am gonna beat on my doc when he gets off holidays! It's bloody obvious that he should have been checking for certain things.

Right... back to reality. I can nudge my doc to consider some things as long as I don't tell him I diagnosed myself based on web surfing. BUT, the web has certainly opened my eyes. It is a great source of info and I suggest to any and all that they consult the internut. Of course, ya gotta take it all with a grain of sea salt... >;-)

This thread has been so supportive it just continues ti impress me. Gnu, I'd like another report and a little about what on with you. PLUS, I could use some updates from everyone else.

In the meantime, just a bit of humor. Do you all know Lonesome EJ? He's a great guy and we've been friends here since we both showed up back in '98. We used to do some "Mudcat Real Time Story Writing." There was a period where we had one going all the time and I always wrote well with Leej and I playing off each other. If you're bored sometime, read this thread, The Mudcat Juke Joint.

A few weeks ago he smashed his hand and I completely missed the thread. Lots of folks had posted but when I read it I saw I was "expected." Spaw also has this reputation he has to keep. So being Leej (Lonesome EJ) I couldn't just say get better, so I posted some scatalogical stuff that took the thread off "elsewhere" for awhile. Leej is also one of the funniest guys on the 'Cat and when he came back he posted this......cover your keyboard and don't drink anything......here ya' go:

shit. See? My left hand inadvertently hit the submit key before I could complete my sentence.
I wish some of you could see what a pathetic shadow of my former ambidextrous lifestyle I am currently bumbling through, and maybe I could get some fucking mudcat mojo up in this bitch instead of a load of comments about my ass and polishing turds. I don't know why everybody else starts a "mudcat mojo" thread and gets sincere well wishes and prayers and invocations to the Great Spirit and such goings on, and I get turd polishing jokes.

I laughed and laughed.....beautiful phrasing. So I decided he did need some healing Mojo so he got this:

*********************************************************************************************

You DO need some real Mojo Leej.......Let me take this laptop into the john and I will send the following chant which I shall repeat 7 times. This powerful prayer chant was transcribed by Lord Windesmear in 1921 after a prayer vigil with Joseph Pujol the French flatulist, aka Le Petomane.

They were about 45 minutes into this session with the god Creppita when Pujol began speaking in tongues repeating the chant I will post below. When it was over, both passed gas and lit matches in the great god's honor. They also noted that many aches and pains they had each been suffering were gone! Over the years they developed this healing technique and it is what I will now do for you.

More importantly, I will pass on the procedure so you can do it yourself. First you must be comfortably seated on the can. Then light a match and say, "I seek your favor Great Creppita." Repeat til the match burns out. I need to warn you here not to use one of those fireplace matches as I did once. By the time it burned out my left leg had gone to sleep and I fell off the crapper.

When the match is out, repeat this chant 7 times:

Booda loop, booda loop, poit-poit, fflllluuuubbb, BBBRRRAAAAWWWWMMMPPP
Booda loop, booda loop, poit-poit, fflllluuuubbb, BBBRRRAAAAWWWWMMMPPP
Booda loop, booda loop, poit-poit, fflllluuuubbb, BBBRRRAAAAWWWWMMMPPP
Booda loop, booda loop, poit-poit, fflllluuuubbb, BBBRRRAAAAWWWWMMMPPP
Booda loop, booda loop, poit-poit, fflllluuuubbb, BBBRRRAAAAWWWWMMMPPP
ZZZZIIIZZZZZ FLEEP

Now fart after the 7th time and if you can smell it over the burnt match, your prayer will be answered.

I will offer the prayer for your healing. You need to do this as well or it may not work as well. Good Luck Leej.

**************************************************************************************************

He says now he tried it but has no eyebrows.....................

Spaw, a veritable 'Tour de Force'! I wish I had your gift for humour...skilfully crafted, elegant scatological prose with flights of imagination that would have put the Monty Python team out of business!
As for updates, there's not much to tell from a very hot East London. I'm still waiting for the results of my first ECG. I'm slowly but surely getting this Diabetes thing whipped into shape. Learning a lot about the GL Diet (sometimes referred to as the GI Diet).
I haven't written anything new for weeks...my 'muse' has deserted me & I have part-composed pieces that really do need finishing.
Jane returns home later this week & goes straight back to hospital for her next scan. I'm hoping to be able to write something positive about that by the end of the week.
In conclusion, echoing Spaw's words, how are you all doing?
       With Love,
                      Nigel & Ann.

Yo, Nigel. This part of "you all" is doin' ok. Please give my regards to Jane. Anyone can be 'brave' for short periods of time. It's much more difficult to extend that over months (or years), but she's doin' it. And that's one place the rubber really hits the road

Nigel, the GI diet is a good way of living - it's not a "diet"

Yes, I agree Sandra. I don't view GI (GL) as a 'diet', it's what I now eat each day, so it constitutes my diet (if you see what I mean!) As you say: It's a good way of living.
Courage Bruce, yes it certainly is about courage. The changes Jane has gone through since January regarding courage have been nothing short of amazing. Sometimes, Ann & I find it hard to keep up! It's our courage that's brought more into question these days.
Maeve, if you're paddling alongside, throw us a line & come aboard...don't work harder, work smarter!
With Love (from a hot, humid London)

went paddling in the sea yesterday with the grandaughters, joyful! A lovely sea breeze is what you need Nigel, its hot and humid at night here but the warm breeze off the sea is wonderful! maybe I can try and send some inland to East London to cool you both down?
Billy is doing really well and no nasty side effects so looking positive towards treatment three at the start os September.
Healing thoughts to you and hope Jane has good results this week!

So good to hear from so many of you. I really needed that. There are days/weeks when everything overwhelms me & I can't see the wood for the trees...been a bit like that recently.
Wendy, I think Ann & I might like to take you up on your offer of a cuppa by the sea. I don't know Frinton all that well, but I spent many childhood holidays on the beautiful beaches of Walton on the Naze. I'll PM you & perhaps we can arrange something. It's also very good news that Billy is responding so well to his treatment.
      Thanks & Love to All.

Lovely, funny, friendly posts to read this morning. Awoke feeling melancholy, not depressed, but very reflective with the following words running around in my head:

"The first school I attended is not there anymore,
But I'm still here.
The shop my Father bought my first guitar from is not there anymore,
But I'm still here.
My Parents are not here anymore,
But I'm still here.
My Dearest Friend & Music Collaborator is not here anymore,
But I'm still here.
My first Wife is not here anymore,
But I'm still here.
My Teacher Training College is not there anymore,
But I'm still here.
Many Friends & Colleagues are not here anymore,
But I'm still here.
My greatest Musical Influences are not here anymore,
But I'm still here.
I'm still here to live my life with Ann, my loving, caring Wife.
A life enriched by Friends afar who steer a ship by yonder star.
I know not when my life will end, but when it does, my Love I'll send
To all of You who've cared for me, true Friends for all eternity."

             With Love to You All,

I've just got off the phone after talking to Jane. Her test results confirm that nothing has changed...her condition remains stable, 'in stasis'. The cancer has not spread & where it had spread to is now referred to as 'minimal'. She also had a complete health check: bloods, BP, cardio etc, etc...all good & normal. Her Oncologist is very pleased with her progress. She continues with the drugs trial...the Doctors monitor & Jane lives her life with a renewed vigour. The best news we could have hoped for.
Good News, second edition; we also heard from our eldest Granddaughter this morning that she has passed her GCSE exams with a stunning set of results...10 passes at 'A*' plus one 'A'. VPG: Very Proud Grandparents! All in all, 23rd August has turned out to be quite a day, (actually, just the morning...what does the afternoon hold?)
               With Love to You All,

Thank you all, once again. Yesterday certainly was a good news day.

Dean, the GCSE examinations are taken at age 16. Our Granddaughter will now go on to study for her 'A' (Advanced) Levels for the next two years, after which she will leave school & go on to University. School Students in England may leave school at age 16 if they choose, but most elect to stay on for a further two years. There are an increasing number of vocational courses in addition to the traditional, academic pathways.

The only 'fly in the ointment' yesterday were my ECG results. There are 'anomalies' which require further investigation. So, Echocardiogram on 3rd. Sept, followed by a referral to a Cardiologist. My GP assures me there doesn't appear to be a major problem, she just wants to dot all the 'is' & cross all the 'tees'. I find her reassurance reassuring!
       With Love to You All,

Wonderful news about Jane Nigel, and congratulations on your clever grandaughters results!
There always has to be a fly in the ointment I s'pose, but your GP sounds very up to date and its better to check these things out before they become a problem. Will be thinking of you on September the 3rd and sending positive thoughts!
The Clacton Airshow is on here so may pop down to the beach and watch the Red Arrows and the fantastic Battle of Britain Flight! Picnic time I think

The afternoon of 23rd turned out to be one of those unexpected, serendipity moments. Here it is in a specially edited format: Bought Ann a 'good' (i.e. v. expensive!) watch several years ago...it needs repairing...visit jeweller who quotes £400.00...visit second jeweller who quotes £120.00...revisit first jeweller full of righteous indignation, but see the manager who just happens to be a watch specialist...manager inspects watch carefully & announces: "I can repair that myself now"...he disappears into their workshop at the back of the shop & reappears five minutes later with one, lookingasgoodasnew, watch...total cost: £0.00!
Rounded off the day rather nicely! Mind you, there is probably one member of staff at the original jewellers whose next appraisal is not going to go too well!
         With Love to You All,
                                        Nigel & Ann.

Smiles indeed.

For the record and for those it may aid in future:

I recently took two "talking watches" which I purchased from CNIB to a master watch and jeweller's shop. After a LOT of messing around by THREE people, including "the master" who was called to the shop by cell phone in this emergency, it was too much. I left but gave my phone number at leaving as they were "researching." I recorded the telephone message... "...your watches have only one battery each and if the watch isn't working properly it cannot be fixed and must be replaced."

Now, anyone with even a small brian would... nevermind... I went to another shop and they replaced both batteries in each watch in ten minutes and charged me about what would have been the same. I have two talking watches and three spare "in a pinch" batteries... and the address of a good watch guy.

So, talking watches got two batteries, no matter what someone who wants to sell you a watch says. >;-)

we been in devon for a week at a picture post card cottage that was'nt what it was cracked up to be, and in fact should have had a warning that it is unsafe for kids and disabled.so if anyone is tempted to book bear shola at upper ottery be warned.it is in a lovely part of the country however and we had a good time out and about.
at a petrol stn almost home i broke my ignition key.thankfully car still started and yesterday i went to vauxhall garage who were unable to fix it without the code[and would have charged a lot and took days if they did]but did suggest the locksmith across the road.sure enough he patiently extracted the end of the key and furnished me with a new one for £25.smiles and relief here too!
blessings everyone   pete.

Good smiles indeed. Nothing new to report from the bridge.
Yesterday, Ann & I spent the day at the Paralympics, a wonderful & unforgettable experience. I felt compelled to write some lines in an attempt to pull together some very mixed emotions. I published this on FB yesterday, but hopefully it will get a wider audience here.

'Talk' by Nigel Paterson © 2012

DonÕt talk to me of transfer fees, injured knees, teams that squeeze
The most from ÔdivingÕ to the ground, advantage seeking sometimes found.
DonÕt talk to me of sky-high wages, sordid pages, petty rages.
Managers whose jobs change weekly, sometimes leaving not so meekly.
DonÕt talk to me of bulging egos, where the tax goes, who the hell knows.
Referees whoÕre not impartial, should there be a new Ôfield marshallÕ?
DonÕt talk to me of lifestyle choices, angry voices, flash Rolls-Royces.
Players rolling on the ground, ÔmiraculouslyÕ, no injuryÕs found.
          ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀
Talk to me of years spent training, when itÕs raining, bodyÕs paining.
Sacrificing loved ones, home life, husband, girl-friend, partner, new wife.
Talk to me of body defects, illness infects, teams that expect
Everyone to pull their weight for Country, Family & Mate.
Talk to me of limbless swimmers, palsied winners, young beginners.
Athletes whoÕve inspired a Nation, disregarding birthÕs creation.
Talk to me of Super Human, super Man & super Woman
Talk to me, your eyes aÕglisten,
Eventually the World will listen.

It is a thoughtful and positive piece, Nigel. On my computer all of the single quotation marks read as an odd gobbledegook, so here it is transformed to what you thought you posted!

Nigel
that is so beautiful, wonderful words. How amazing to have been there, I wondered if I could get last minute tickets ,they are releasing them every morning. Billy and I have been watching every evening and think these games have been more meaningful than the Olympics! Truly inspirational people!

Billy had treatment three this week, halfway there! So far a little weary but apart from that no adverse effects! I trust Jane is still feeling well and that you and Ann are doing well! That cup of tea is on its way, I will pm you about the dates you gave me,(maybe the 30th?) just seeing how Billy gets on this week!

With love to the crew
Wendy xx

Please feel free to share 'Talk' with anyone you choose. Just respect my copyright & include my name.
Ann & I have watched most of the Paralympics on TV, but it's only when you actually go that it really hits you. One of the most joyous & moving experiences of our lives.

I'm so pleased that my poem, 'Talk', struck a chord (no pun intended!) I've written short poems ever since I learned how to write. Usually just for Family, something to put inside a birthday or anniversary card, certainly not for public consumption. As an adult, I've discovered that poetry helps me express some of my deeper thoughts & feelings in ways that prose just can't match. Finding the courage to share some of the poems publicly was something I agonised over for months! I don't consider myself to be a 'Poet', I just enjoy (and sometimes need to), write poetry. What puzzles me is that I can't write a decent song lyric to save my life! What I have learned is that Lyrics & Poems, whilst sharing many similarities, are not the same thing at all. Thank you all for your generous praise. That you liked 'Talk' or it moved you, or you wanted to pass it on, leaves me feeling that writing it was time well-spent.
Wendy, very glad to hear that Billy's treatment is progressing well. Our 'cuppa date' on 30th is still looking good from our end.
Jane has had some of her drugs' treatment stopped, it being deemed unnecessary any more...that always feels like progress has been made. She remains on a closely monitored program, but the gaps between the tests & scans are gradually being extended...another sign of progress. In January of this year, we were practically planning her funeral. So much has changed in eight months.
      Hoist the Mainsail!
                                  With Love,
                                                 Nigel & Ann.
