My Dear Wendy, I've looked back to the early days of our thread & read your first, tentative postings. Now, your openness, honesty & disarmingly frank disclosures bear witness to your great strength of character. Despite all you have to endure, you always manage to find something positive or humourous to say. You are a credit to your Family & an inspiration to us all.
With Much Love & sincere admiration,
                                                             Nigel

sorry to hear that ,wendy. seems GP's are a mixed bunch. my mums had mis-diagnosed her condition, which maybe reduced her chances.
on the other hand becks doc is so dedicated he offered to come out over xmas last year as tommy was not too good.
hope something sorts out for you, so you can get some rest.

OH DEAR! I am so sorry to hear that, Wendy. I was about to post about how much your project has done and will continue to do and then read about the fall. I am, of course, happy to hear the ensuing care was good and that she's home.

Jeri... "Maybe that's how we achieve immortality in this world." Can't think of many other ways.

What is said about counting your chickens?? tempting fate saying I had some outings planned!

Mum fell getting out of bed yesterday, about 7.30. Our Dr eventually arrived at 4 in the afternoon, diagnosed a broken wrist and told me to take mum in the car to the local A and E. We pointed out she couldn't stand so the GP said she would phone for an ambulance, she was in the house for 4 minutes!!

The paramedic noticed at once mum had a fracture of the pelvis, the hospital at Colchester were wonderful. The consultant decided that mum would be best at home in familiar seroundings so we came home in a private ambulance at 2 in the morning. The care was amazing unlike the GP !!!

So I am trying to arrange 24 hour care at home, haven't slept for about 31 hours but mum is tucked up in bed with her arm in a cast and, more importantly, happy to be home.

love to all

Thanks for the hugs, friends. I, and I know Linn, will appreciate them.

We had such a good session yesterday, with musicians from near and far showing up. One thing I know for a fact continues on are the connections Tom made happen. Friends we wouldn't know without him, things that happened because he was here. All of these things that occurred because of Tom make his life remarkable. He virtually built a community here.

He lost his voice a few years ago, but when I think of him now, I can always call up that voice. I can see the impish glint in his eyes. I know Linn has many good friends, and she'll be OK. The love the two of them shared isn't the type that makes a person need it.

No one lives forever. Tom had a good life, and he certainly made many lives better. Maybe that's how we achieve immortality in this world.

Nigel and Pete,

The advantage of living by the sea, it is always here, and a warm welcome chez Wendy and Billy also, we have been known to have hot soup and bangers and mash at the beach hut in the winter, great after a brisk walk wearing many layers!! Sometimes is the best time as the summer trippers are gone and a deserted beach and winter sky can be spectacular. Short notice is often the best way to arrange a day out in this house so watch the weather forcast and pm me at any time! We have a few outings to look forward too, my son is 40 next week so we are off to a hotel on the 30th to celebrate. He has Giles Brandreth at the theatre on the 6th December so we are going for a jolly evening. Best of all I am going to the carol concert in aid of Children and the Arts in Sloane Square on the 9th with some wonderful readings by Brian Blessed and Penelope Wilton and others.

I too dislike these dark evenings, feel a bit trapped indoors if I am honest. Bless mum, she is deteriorating quite quickly now, much more confused and not as happy in herself. Last week she shouted at me and threw something at me . I know that it is totally the dementia and not my lovely mum but I had to take myself upstairs and have a good cry. However I read the letters that she wrote to my father during the war and reminded myself of the vibrant young woman she was then. I have finished her memory book it covers her life from 1923 when she was born until this autumn when she had her 90th birthday, full of memories from her letters, memories from my cousins, and many many photographs. The last page has a photo of Scarlet ( Bunny) Reuben and Prudence, my grandchildren with the message saying" nanny we love you this is your book of memories with love from all of us"

Mum spends many hours reading the book, she takes it everywhere, last week she took it to the day centre and the manager read it to all the people there, it stimulated memories and they had an animated morning remembering where they were when The Crystal Palace burnt down, what they did during the war, the fancy dress party when the Queen was crowned in 1953 and lots more!

I really enjoyed putting the book together and I am going to send a copy to all my cousins for Christmas, it is our story too.

sending love to all the crew
coffee pot is on help yourself

Allison, so good to hear from you. A really uplifting post that brings a ray of sunshine to some rather gloomy days.

Wendy, our day by the sea looks increasingly destined for 2014. We're determined to make it to Frinton (Many happy childhood memories of Frinton, Clacton & Walton-on-the Naze). Family commitments at present are complex & very fluid, meaning that putting something in the diary that's actually going to stay PUT is next to impossible!

Echoing Ranger1's post...Julia L & her Mum...sending Love & Healing Thoughts.

Gnu, the imagery invoked by your earlier post lingers in my mind. Your writing draws me in. I could be sitting in a chair opposite you, smelling & tasting the food (scoff, a word I haven't heard used for many a long year).

May the shorter days & longer nights pass quickly. I yearn for the Spring,
                                    With Love,

I've just listened to "Who will Sing For Me" again. An inspired choice that has filled my eyes with tears for Tom, for Jane, for all our Dear Departed.
We have a ship to maintain. A crew to cherish. Onwards we voyage into a largely unknown future, but safe in the knowledge that we have each other. How precious.

Beautiful Music, Maeve, thank you. Thinking of you & trying to share your distress,

Janie, according to the comment of the person who posted that file, the musicians were Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, and Ricky Skaggs. My favorite rendition was by Merritt Herring, but the tape he gave me burned.

Back here after another hiatus, just providing a bit of ballast and telling you all how much I love you! I am awash in humble gratitude, as finally I feel that I'm living a charmed life at the moment, with a beloved husband who tells me hourly how much I mean to him, a lovely home, a happy home-based business- so you are my family in need, and I send you my strength and my love. Wish I could do more.

Hoping a cheery Mudelf will erase the first, now corrected, 06:03 AM version of the poem...and thanks for so doing.

Gnu, you are such a gifted writer.

We're feeling the cold here, too, and the edge of desperation that is driven in with winter's leading edge of bitter cold. We are grateful to have an excellent and efficient woodstove to keep us warm, a winter's worth of firewood in the cellar, with water access down there as well. I'm especially grateful for a working washing machine, yet longing for working sinks and for a shower, at the same time.

Do read the latest, suddenly peaceful post from Linn/Bat Goddess regarding care for Tom/Curmudgeon. That is Love in action.
Curmudgeon In Hospital - Nov 2013 [update 7 Nov]

Sending encouragement and light to you all,

Maeve

A found poem by and for gnu:

Gnu Snow

Not long in, me, from the Northeast
Cold wet winds of the North Atlantic
Swirling, mixing, depositing wet snow on my nape,

And then stalling in combo with westerlies
From Lower Canada,
Southerlies from the US Seaboard

Such that ne'er a strip o' wind exists
And all is silent, yet making exposed skin
And clothed joints ache.

A young man would revel in such weather.
Tis a night to be in the DEEP woods
To feel FRESH and ALIVE!...

To have ale and venture forth in squinting darkness
To explore what is and where it is at night on such a night.
Been there, done that. I choose the warmth herein.

doing ok here at the moment, have got an extra day of care for mother, so on Mondays I can go out with my daughter. Yesterday we made a Christmas log and popped it in the freezer, had lunch at Beth Chatto ( beautiful gardens have a google!) then took the little girls for their swimming lesson.
back home at6, and felt like an evening in the kitchen, one huge casserole and two apple crumbles to freeze, then a large Gin and Tonic!1 So thanks for all your loving thoughts.

First, my thoughts go to Linn and Tom right now. The sure knowledge that time is finite is a very tough corner to turn. Many here have had to turn that corner and when it is between the you and the person you chose to share your life with............All my best and most heartfelt cares go to them now. We love you both Linn and Tom.

And now.............for something completely different........

The 'Cat is pissing me off no end lately. Slow, unreliable, and sometimes just non-existent, it wins the trifecta of crappy websites. I've had a cable modem for years and my current computer is very fast and powerful and yet this damn site which I have spent so many hours with for so many years is barely useable! I have lost posts recently and most times I just get tired of waiting for the damn thing. If I post to one thread it is probably the only one I can get because if it is the second post I make, well, just fuckit!

Well I feel better now! My best to all of you operating on the assumption this post takes and if it doesn't then ta' hell with it and I'll try again some other time. Of course you won't know that because this didn't load! If this site keeps giving it to me as it has can someone send some Vaseline?

Love y'all!!!

Spaw

VTam... Linn's (Bat Goddess) last update is far from batty. A snippet : "But mostly I'm thinking about what will make him happy and comfortable. I love him."

Says it all.

Golimumab...wasn't that the ugly little guy who wanted the ring of power so bad...

Whatever it is, here's hoping it brings some relief.
