Subject: Private Peaceful BBC R4 From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 01 Feb 12 - 03:29 AM Same author as Warhorse. Saturday, 14:30 on BBC Radio 4 Synopsis Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo dramatised by Simon Reade with music by Coope Boyes and Simpson. In the First World War over 300 British and Commonwealth soldiers were executed by firing squad, some for desertion and cowardice. Some for simply sleeping at their posts. Many of these men were traumatised by shell-shock. Not until some 90 years later did they receive posthumous pardons from the British Government, after a campaign helped in part by the publication of Michael Morpurgo's novel Private Peaceful . The radio dramatisation will bring this story of injustice to an even wider audience. Recorded on location in Iddesleigh - the Devon village where the book is set with Michael Morpurgo playing the Vicar and Nicholas Lyndhurst Sergeant Hanley More info here, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01bh91t |

I imagine few on this site will be unaware of the background, but for those few here is a link to an informative site. |
