There are several songs called The County Mayo. Could you lay down a few lyrics to give us a clue?

My day of (something) been at an end i fell into a sleep,
in the moment after i was on the ocean deep,
thoughts and pleasent memories into my mind did flow,
as i sailed away with my comrades gay from the county of Mayo.

This one maybe?
Jim Carroll

The County of Mayo
FROM THE IRISH OF THOMAS LAVELLE

On the deck of Patrick Lynch's boat I sat in woful plight,
Through my sighing all the weary day and weeping all the night;
Were it not that full of sorrow from my people forth I go,
By the blessèd sun! 'tis royally I'd sing thy praise, Mayo!

When I dwelt at home in plenty, and my gold did much abound,
In the company of fair young maids the Spanish ale went round—
'Tis a bitter change from those gay days that now I'm forced to go
And must leave my bones in Santa Cruz, far from my own Mayo.

They are alter'd girls in Irrul now; 'tis proud they're grown and high,
With their hair-bags and their top-knots, for I pass their buckles by—
But it 's little now I heed their airs, for God will have it so,
That I must depart for foreign lands and leave my sweet Mayo.

'Tis my grief that Patrick Loughlin is not Earl of Irrul still,
And that Brian Duff no longer rules as Lord upon the hill:
And that Colonel Hugh McGrady should be lying dead and low,
And I sailing, sailing swiftly from the county of Mayo.

It had some toor a loos in it. Hopefully some of the UK or Irish crowd will be able to help you.

Can't day I recognise it as being used elsewhere - though there's a whiff of several tunes about it - The Lakes of Ponchartrain and some versions of The Lily of the West , for openers!

I think I have the CD somewhere and will check for lyrics and notes.

Regards

Beautiful song. The only words difficult to work out from Sean Keane's lovely accent is the first line. If anyone could work them out, this will be great. The rest of the song is:

.......................and I fell into a sleep
In the moment after I was on the ocean deep.
Kind thoughts and pleasant memories into my mind did flow.
As I sailed away with my comrades gay, from the county of Mayo.

I left my peaceful residence I entered Queenstown quay
Although she never left my mind in exile far away
Her hills and valleys haunted me wherever I did go
And I prayed to God that I might rod in the county of Mayo.

See how we were banished from our own dear native home
Thrown like dogs in rotten ships in foreign lands to roam
'Twas hard to say these ships of clay could withstand the waves.
Many thousands of old Erin's sons do lie in watery graves.

I'll cast aside my grief and grasp a rifle in me hand
With gallant comrades we'll march forth to free our native land.
We'll cast the foe before us in the fields and bloody war
Then loud and high we'll raise the cry, do you remember Castlebar

We'll avenge the broken treaty that was signed in Limerick town
Remember the plains of Aughrim where we mowed the Redcoats down
March on the Wicklow mountains And strike another blow
Like the gallant band of Fenian men from the county of Mayo.

Our dreams then will be realised, and Irish men will see
A green flag waving over, old Ireland proud and free
Peace once more upon our shore, prosperity will flow
And our friends at home will welcome us back, true exiles from Mayo.

I believe that this be a more complete version of the lyrics to the Sean Keane version of this song. I hope that this helps anyone seeking them.

My day of toil being at an end, I fell into a sleep
In the moment after I was on the ocean deep.
Kind thoughts and pleasant memories into my mind did flow.
As I sailed away with my comrades gay, from the county of Mayo.

I left my peaceful residence I entered Queenstown key(quay)
Although she never left my mind in exile far away
Her hills and valleys haunted me wherever I did go
And I prayed to God that I might trod in the county of Mayo.

See how we were banished from our own dear native home
Thrown like dogs in rotten ships in foreign lands to roam
'Twas hard to say these ships of clay could withstand the waves.
Many thousands of old Erin's sons do lie in watery graves.

I'll cast aside my tears and grasp a rifle in my hand
With gallant comrades I'll march forth to free our native land.
We'll drive the foe before us in the fierce and bloody war
Then loud and high we'll raise the cry, remember Castlebar!

We'll avenge the broken treaty that was signed in Limerick town
Remember the plains of Aughrim where we mowed the Redcoats down
March on the Wicklow Mountains And strike another blow
Like those gallant band of Fenian men from the county of Mayo.

Our dreams then will be realized, and Irish men will see
A green flag waving over, old Ireland proud and free
Peace once more upon her shore, prosperity will flow
And our friends at home will welcome us back, true exiles from Mayo.

History of the song?

Is it a 19th-century riff on the 22 December 1691 Flight of the Wild Geese?
