Hi, Gloria - You gotta be a bit clever to find a song like "The Rose" in the database. If you put "rose" in the search box, you'll come up with a jillion songs. Better to put a phrase in square brackets, like [some say love], or maybe a distinctive word like McBroom. Or, you can do it the easy way and click here

"The Rose" isn't a folk song. It is a theme for the movie of the same name starring Bette Midler that was written by Amanda McBroom. Sheet music is available in stores, or, if you go to www.amandamcbroom.com you can order it from her for $5.00

Here are the lyrics:

THE ROSE
(Amanda McBroom)

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leads your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need.
But I say love, it is a flower
And you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one that's never taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live.

When the night has been so lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong.
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the Sun grows
In the spring becomes the rose

I say love it is a flower
And you its only seed.
[repeat these two lines three times]

This song is one of the essentials in my portfolio. Beautifully sung by Bette Midler in the flick of the same name, which I recommend. Her role as a Joplin-type character is terrific. The movie character attributes her early blues influence to Furry Lewis.

Lyric is also in the database.

The Rose may not be a "folk song" but it always goes down well when we sing it.
Michael Ball recorded The Rose as a single giving all profits to research into ovarian cancer as someone close to him died from it.

18th century songs entitled "The Rose"

1: Starts "Arise arise, thou blushing rose"
2: Starts "Blooming, beauteous fragrant flow'r"
3: Starts "Child of the summer, charming rose"
4: Starts "Go happy flow'r to her hand"

In the 19th century they knew better than to use such a simply title if they didn't want their song confused with others.

Hello, everybody. This song is in the DT. It should have come up when you posted the Lyr Req. I might try that out and see if I'm lyin'.

As Dick will plainly tell you, being in the DT does not make a song a "folk song". It just means someone liked it enough to post it.

Yep, it came up, right after the question "Have you checked the Database?" Unfortunately, it was one of about 150 song titles and you would really have had to look for it.

MudGuard...I was just wondering where you got your lyrics because they are quite different from ones I've sung for years, so I was wondering if there were 2 versions or something. ~Bri~

Bri,
the lyrics I got are transcribed from a Dubliners CD called 30 Years A-Greying.
If you have a different set of lyrics this is proof there are at least two versions.

A nice example of a virtualy three chord song

 C......................G7...
Some say love, it is a river
.....F..........G.....C....
That drowns the tender reed
C......................G7..
Some say love, it is a raiser
..... F..........G.......C
That leaves your soul to bleed.
C......................F(9)...
Some say love, it is a hunger
...F..............G7
An endless aching need.
......C.............G....
I say love, it is a flower
....F............c
And you its only seed.

C.........................G.....
It's the heart afraid of breaking
.....F.....G.........C
That never learns to dance
C........................G...
It's the dream afraid of waking
......F....G.........C
That never takes the chance
c........Em........Em.....Am7
It's the one that wont be taken
.....F.............G
Who cannot seem to give
........C..............G
And its soul afraid of dying
......F.....G.........C
That never learns to live.

And the night has been so lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong.
Let us remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the Sun grows
In the spring it's called the rose

I say love it is a flower
And you its only seed.

The chord changes to not allign over the precise word...so you need to feel where they fall....however, they are the correct changes for each line.

Joe....can you please point me towards the location that explains how to correctly allign chords over the phrases.
