In "The Parish of Dunkeld" what is the meaning of the phrase "they biggit a lum where the bell used to hang"? Thanks, John

Built a chimney. Just as in the old Scots phrase "Lang may Your Lum Reek": Long may you chimney smoke. This is a wish that your household may prosper. Also as in the Billy Connolly song about the crematorium: "And when you see the smoke go curling up the lum, it'll be a hot time in the old town tonight!" Cheers John mouldy

The lum in this case was to let them build the fire for their still;
"A stillpot they got and they brewed Hielan' whiskey"...

I'd love to see the full lyrics. Andy M Stewart set these words to the air "Over the Water to Charlie" Was it ever collected/recorded to other airs? Is the song based on a true story?

Ah, but which Bonnie Dundee tune? The one sung these days was I seem to recall a piano piece known as The Band At A Distance, and put to the lyric by a Scottish lady singer 120 years ago or so, in preference to the original preferred tune.
