After dithering around trying to totally self-finance a CD project, I've discovered a wonderful site called "Kickstarter.com," which lets people solicit backers for artistic endeavors. I have a project up that someone reminded me I haven't yet posted on Mudcat, so here it is.

Go to Bob Clayton's "Hokey-Dokey CD" and take a look at it.

I'm planning to post the songs I'm putting on it (once I finally decide, and that's probably harder than the singing and arranging and everything else), both here and on Kickstarter, and possibly a link to one or more preliminary recordings. I have several already recorded (with Dennis Cook), and plan on doing more. I think the final product will be about 14 - 16 songs (I've never been good at editing out songs I like, so keeping it short is out of the question).

So take a look and listen to the intro video song (hastily penned and recorded from my PC) and see if you'd like to encourage the project. And no, "Hokey-Dokey Music" won't be the final title, though it's likely to be a sub-title, all things considered.

A question -- if I wanted to post a performance recording to help advertise this thing, should I put up a song that will be on the CD or one that won't be? In any case, it'd be a preliminary cut, not the finished product, but do I get a better response with an "extra," or should it be a "sample?"

If you know what I mean...

Advice, please.

Bob

Bob, at the rate people buy CDs these days, I think it doesn't really matter. Is there a way to reach you via Mudcat?

Well, messages do get through, although I don't always check to see if I have any (and I may need my password reset as well).

You can reach me at songuitar@verizon.net, too.

Status report: with 17 days to go, I have raised just under $500 of the $975 I think I need. It's time to add some more details, such as a list of the songs I'm recording.

Here you go:

Angelina Baker (Minstrel band)
Ol' Dan Tucker (Minstrel band)
Uncle Joe's Hail Columbia (Henry Clay Work, 1876)
Paul McNeeley's Ukulele Song (my uncle Buddy's ukulele-tuning song)
Jose from Tijuana (a novelty song by my Uncle Buddy)
Summer Man (Bob Clayton original)
'Bo (Bob Clayton original)
Cowboy's Life (Bob Clayton original, featuring "Sidekicks")
Old Bill Pickett (featuring "Sidekicks")
Curtains of Night (traditional)
Corliss Engine (Bob Clayton original)
Sea Wing (Bob Clayton original)
Harbors of Home
World of Time (Bob Clayton original)
Ode (We Are the Music Makers) (Bob Clayton original tune)
But Not My Heart (Bob Clayton original)

This list is NOT set in stone. Some changes are likely, though some are already recorded.

If anyone has a suggested addition that you think I know, let me hear about it.

Anyway, go to Kickstarter.com and look up my project. I think it's going to be a good one.

It won't be much, Bob, but I'll be kicking in a contribution this weekend.

For the many 'Catter's who have never attended a Getaway or are not in that wonderfully rich folk community in the greater Washington DC area, Bob is a fine musician and music historian, not to mention pretty darn knowledgeable about guitars and instruments. Bob is a musician and a folklorist who possesses a wide repertoire of music, history and lore, and is one of the richest repositories of American folk music, history and lore represented in the membership of the awesome FSGW, which in terms of Folk Societies in the USA is a national treasure. Bob has a special interest in the Civil War but his knowledge and lore of American folk music and the social history represented extends well beyond the Civil War.

I don't think it matters whether what you put up as a sample is from the CD or not, Bob. Make sure it is a good quality recording that puts your best musical foot forward, and have some one other than you write a really good and true blurp that authentically "sings" your praises. I say other than you because I don't think you will sing your own praises as well as they ought to be sung.

All the best,

Janie

Thanks for the kind words, Janine. And having someone else write my blurb makes sense, since I'm not a good "self-salesman" at all.

For that matter, could I use your words above? I won't unless you say so, but it looks good to me.

For those who have not heard Bob.. or some of those songs... his "Corliss Engine" and "Ode (We Are the Music Makers)" are worth the price of admission by themselves.

(I have a few suggestions for CD #2... but I have my prejudices. Like "The Dummy Line"....more later)

You are most welcome to use it, Bob, but I'm betting some one else who knows you personally could do a much better job.

Check your pm's.

That "Guest" thing is because one location or the other -- home or work -- is my "official one, complete with its cookie, and the other isn't. I can never remember which. To reach me directly, use
songuitar@verizon.net as my email.

In any case, it's down to a dozen days, and down to $250 to meet my minimum amount. If it doesn't meet it, I don't get the pledged amounts. If it passes it, I get the money, and going over doesn't cut it off, either. I set a minimal amount and obviously could use even more, of course.

A friend suggested emailing a bunch of friends who may not be on Mudcat or even Facebook, and I might do that, but I don't like to "push." I suppose this is self-defeating, but I'm not that forward for a guy who likes to be "on stage."

So I'm going to try the email blast, just so some of my extended list of contacts can hear about the project, in case they haven't already. So if any of you get an email from out of the blue, it's just my "making sure" attempt.

The project:
Hokey-Dokey Music CD

"Bob, you know, you can have a cookie on more than one computer... if you want to."

Well, if I recall, I don't even remember my password, to make any changes. I may try it later on.

Post got lost in cyberspace.

Bob, I goofed when I contributed. I am not interested in a digital download but would love to have the cd when it is out. I am pretty sure I selected I don't want the cd or the digital download. (I'd be more than happy to pick it up at the Getaway, which I am determined to not miss this year.) I don't know how the Amazon bit works. If it isn't possible to easily sort out, then so be it. I take responsibility checking the wrong box. In that event, I'll fervently hope you have the cd for sale at the Getaway and buy a copy there.
