Subject: ROSEMARY TAWNEY From: GUEST,Sean O'Shea Date: 13 Mar 12 - 09:48 AM Very many will be saddened by the news of Rosemary's death, this morning,in Exeter. In her eighties, she was keenly and actively involved in the Devon dance scene and song sessions through the county. She was hugely instrumental in the continuation of the releasing of material by her husband, the legendary Cyril and in the maintenance of his website, for which, the folk world should declare it's debt. More than this, she was a lovely, gentle and funny person who her friends wil not let pass from their memories in a hurry. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Liberty Boy Date: 13 Mar 12 - 10:25 AM So sorry to hear of Rosemary's death, a really lovely lady and a genuine nice person. I met her in Sidmouth last August and we had a chat. She asked me to sing The Grey Funnel Line on the concert. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: eddie1 Date: 13 Mar 12 - 10:46 AM I'll never forget my first meeting with Rosemary, I'd been on tour in Germany when she and Cyril arrived to stay with us while he was touring Scotland. I got home in the middle of the night, was up quite early and was sitting in the living room having a welcome coffee when this woman, a complete stranger to me, rushed into the room wearing a very short nighty and being pursued by our Lab who was intent on sticking her nose where Labs always want to stick their noses! We've had a lot of laughs about that first meeting since. Give Cyril my best Rosemary Eddie |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: mandomad Date: 13 Mar 12 - 12:52 PM I also have many happy memories of Rosemary, and Cyril of course and some lovely notes that Rosemary sent to me after I visited them both when they lived in Meanwood, Leeds. A lovely couple, a joy to talk to. mandomad |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,John James Date: 13 Mar 12 - 02:32 PM Very saddened by the news of Rosemary's passing. Just a few months ago she was telling me how Cyril so enjoyed my guitar playing, but...but he thought his accompaniments were just right for his songs. Darn right they were...how 's about that diesel engine guitar accomp.for Sally Free and Easy..classic. Rosemary keep the flame burning for Cyril's music, for she knew as we do that Cyril Tawney was one of the greatest song writers that GB has ever produced, and as Sean O'Shea says at the top here, the folk world should declare it's debt to Rosemary. Lets rejoice that Rosemary had a long and fulfilling life. R.I.P |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Gurney Date: 13 Mar 12 - 02:58 PM Corresponded with her just last year, knew her from when I lived in Plymouth. Sad to hear the news. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Mark Dowding Date: 13 Mar 12 - 07:13 PM So sorry to hear this sad news. Cyril stayed with my mum and dad after a gig up here in Lancashire. Cyril and my dad were on the same ship for a couple of weeks and Rosemary rang me up to 'advise' me not to let Cyril have too much to drink when they were reminiscing over the old days!! Although I never met Rosemary, I had several email conversations with her and was able to furnish her with a copy of a recording I had made of Cyril at a folk club in Southport in the 1980s for her archive that she was building of Cyril's performances. RIP Rosemary. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,blowz sans cookie Date: 13 Mar 12 - 07:42 PM So sorry to hear this I knew both Cyril and Rosemary from their visits to Lancaster Maritime Festival and they became very good friends. Rosemary was always saying how pleased she was that Cyril's last performance was at Lancaster, as he was surrounded by friends. After I had a heart attack in 2008, I remember picking up an answerphone message from her - she'd been talking to Louis Killen, who'd told her I'd been poorly so she was ringing for a chat. I phoned her back and we spoke for hours! I coudn't believe that I had people like Louis and Rosemary enquiring after my health! Rosemary will have fun organising everyone up there! |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Phil Cooper Date: 13 Mar 12 - 10:29 PM Sorry to hear this. I wrote to Rosemary about licensing Sally Free and Easy back in 2005 and she was a delight to deal with. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Topic 56 Date: 14 Mar 12 - 09:59 AM Was very sad to receive the news that Rosemary had passed away yesterday. I got to know them both from Cyril's club performances. If I was at a club where Cyril was performing I would generally give them both a lift back to Meanwood Road where we would have a yarn over a cup of tea or something stronger. When Rosemary got her driving license and a car I was redundant as a driver but not as a person and we still had many conversations. Since their move to Exeter comunications were maintained by e-mail. Hope some body takes up the standard she carried keeping Cyril's memory alive. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: MoorleyMan Date: 14 Mar 12 - 10:24 AM Just picked up on this thread after two days away - more really sad news. I was in email correspondence with this wonderful, genuine and mightily fearless lady only last year seeking some points of clarification regarding the recent CD reissues of Cyril's Argo LPs. Rosemary was indeed a true delight to deal with, as ever, and she invariably remembered various occasions of even earlier correspondence with much more accurate recall than I ! She will be greatly missed, not least for her tireless championing of Cyril's music and his key contributions to the folk scene. RIP Rosemary, and say hello to Cyril for me! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Sugwash Date: 14 Mar 12 - 10:38 AM A lovely lady, I only had the pleasure of meeting her three or four times, but she made an impression, RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 14 Mar 12 - 10:48 AM So very, very sorry to learn this. We had many contacts over the years - Cyril was the very first Guest booked at the Bothy when it was purely a Liverpool Club and appeared many times at the Southport 'branch' where Rosemary would often accompany Cyril on bookings. Theirs was a pairing just right - as others have said, they'll be picking up where they left off now. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Arthur_itus Date: 14 Mar 12 - 02:33 PM RIP Rosemary. Such a lovely lady. Hopefully she is now with Cyril again, who she so dearly missed. Cyril was the one of the first artisst I saw at a folk club back in the late 60's. When he passed away, we did a charity event at Faldingworth. That is when I got to know Rosemary. Have spoken many times with her since then. She even sent me the original lyrics for Sammy's Bar that Cyril wrote down on paper. Very saddening. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Gozz Date: 14 Mar 12 - 05:41 PM I remember her going around the Celebrating Cyril event at C♯ thanking people for attending - whether she knew them well or not. A gracious lady who so supported her talented husband. Rest in Peace. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Effsee Date: 15 Mar 12 - 12:49 AM Thurso Folk Festival c1980, when Cyril was staying with us, my wife shouted through the hatch between the kitchen/living room..."Who wants butter with the new potatoes?" Cyril..."Me! As long as no-one tells Rosemary!" LOL! Only spoke to her on the phone years later, (never told her about the butter), but she sounded a real charmer! RIP both. Fondly remembered. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Margaret Date: 22 Mar 12 - 02:05 PM So sorry to hear that Rosemay has died. I was with her the day before, she didn't feel well, but not near death. She was a lovely lady. I shall miss her. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Gail Date: 22 Mar 12 - 03:13 PM It's also worth acknowledging that Rosemary was well known in her own right. She was in charge of a specialist Engineering library at Leeds University for years and, as such, helped young researchers from all over the world. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: Tyke Date: 22 Mar 12 - 03:39 PM Not been on the Mudcat for awhile then when I do I see this about Rosemary, Oh dear, she was always such a lovley person. Its a sad loss to us all. I'm sure that her spirte will be seeking out Cyril and giving him back the loyalty and suport that she gave him as his wife. Cyril was a luckyman indeed I can now gain some comfort now thinking of them together again! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,Jan Foale- Director of Pastime Players, Exet Date: 22 Mar 12 - 03:53 PM I first met Rosemary at dance sessions and subsequently persuaded her to share her memories of the 1950's with our Reminiscence Theatre group. She gave us some wonderful memories which, like her were unique and funny. They are now a permanent part of our show and will remain a constant reminder of her. She was a lovely lady and we will miss her. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: GUEST,David M Date: 26 Aug 14 - 05:36 AM I am two years late, having been out of folk music circulation for sevral years. I wondered why my emails remained unanswered. I first met Rosemary and Cyril together in my college days in Exeter. It wss at one of the late Bob Cann's first folk nights out at South Zeal. (Bob had taken over musician duties from Dennis Darke at out Folk Dance CLub)I learned that Rosemary was a great dancer. We renewed our friendship dancing Running Set at Whitby over 35 years later. Rosemary was a wonderful support to Cyril and a peronality in her own right. I am glad I had he chance to get to know them both again. Rest well together. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney -2012 From: MGM·Lion Date: 26 Aug 14 - 05:53 AM I don't know how I managed to miss this thread, and this sad news, at the time; but would nevertheless belatedly express my grief at learning of the death of a much valued acquaintance. ≈Michael≈ |

Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney (w of Cyril) (13 Mar 2012) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 May 24 - 04:49 PM Who is currently the best non-corporate person to contact for permissions on songs by Cyril Tawney? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney (w of Cyril) (13 Mar 2012) From: GUEST Date: 17 May 24 - 04:33 AM Thanks, Joe, for asking! I should give some added context (if anyone has suggestions): * I run a small "filk" (science-fiction folk) publishing label in the states. * There is a song we would like to release on a CD that's a derivative work of one of Cyril's songs (adapting his melody to new lyrics). * In previous years, people in our community releasing this song have just asked Cyril directly for permission in-person — and verbally. He always enthusiastically gave that permission. * Unfortunately, while we have witnesses to Cyril giving that verbal permission in the past — we don't have any written documentation that could be taken to a giant music corporation to grant permission. If anyone has any suggestions or tips, I'm very appreciative. We may also splurge to talk to a music lawyer about whether a compulsory license may apply here. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney (w of Cyril) (13 Mar 2012) From: Nick Dow Date: 18 May 24 - 05:21 AM Joe, do you have the equivalent of MCPS? That is the way this is usually done here. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Rosemary Tawney (w of Cyril) (13 Mar 2012) From: Joe Offer Date: 18 May 24 - 11:30 AM Hi, Nick - Licensing songs for performance is quite easy, but publishing them or altering them gets complicated. In publication of the Rise Again Songbook, we had to directly contact the holder of the copyright and obtain a license. If we couldn't located the holder of the copyright, we couldn't publish the song. I don't know how much of that is U.S. law, and how much was the policy of our publisher, Hal Leonard. -Joe- |
