Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Mar 12 - 11:04 AM So, in the song the "bonnie bunch of roses" are the British I sles? |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: DMcG Date: 19 Mar 12 - 11:25 AM Each to their own. I generally like June Tabor, but for this one I prefer Nic Jones' version |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Bill D Date: 19 Mar 12 - 12:15 PM June Tabor, for all her talent, does strange things with that. Nic Jones is much closer to the 'standard' tune & treatment. But.. *shrug*.. tastes differ. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Mar 12 - 12:41 PM I thought that 'bonnie bunch of roses' referred to the soldiers killed in the wars. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 19 Mar 12 - 01:26 PM Tastes do indeed differ - sounds like rock to me....! |

Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 19 Mar 12 - 08:28 PM A great song, thanks Lizzie. Here it is sung by Colm Walsh uploaded on one of my favourite YouTube channels. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 20 Mar 12 - 10:56 AM No, Banjoray, rock whines a lot more and has occasional explosions. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 20 Mar 12 - 11:24 AM Thhe late Tony Capstick could tear your heart out with that song. Just so beautiful..... I've heard it done by Bernard Wrigley, Nic Jones, Carthy....all quite good, but there was something special about Capstick and that song. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Jack Campin Date: 20 Mar 12 - 11:28 AM I prefer Tabor's tune - the one Nic Jones uses is so twisty it distracts from the meaning. Are either of them traditional? The Oysterband's backing comes across as Dick Dale surf-rock with an overlay of Germanic pomp. It sort of works but I certainly wouldn't want to hear a whole album of it. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:28 PM I agree - Brilliant track by a singer and band that have been amongst my favourites for what must be over 30 years - We had 2 Oysters (Of the Ceilidh Band variety) stop at out house after an early Swinton Festival and they were lovely lads. Had lots more hair at the time but then again so did I :-) My memory is quite good for things like that but what I can't quite remember is who was predicting that the folk awards would all go to the 'Folk Mafia'? Something like And WHO will win them? The same old, same old..for that's what The Folk Mafia, keeps The Family CLOSE. I guess then that the June and the Lads must be amongst the Cosa Nostra di Gente then seeing as they won so many awards between them. Am I still allowed to like them even though they probably put horses heads in songwriters beds? :D tG |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 Mar 12 - 06:29 PM Oh - and BTW - I liked it so much I bought the album. D. |
Subject: RE: YEAH! It's finally on Youtube!! From: treewind Date: 21 Mar 12 - 07:00 PM Haven't heard the June Tabor track yet, but Bob Copper's version of that song, sung at Martyn Wyndham Read's Song Links concert only a few months before he died, will always be very special for me. |
