We are looking at taking cottage in Robinhoods Bay - about 5 miles from Whitby. Any info ref parking 'close' to Whitby would be useful - will be carrying guitar ( time to get one of those back pack cases i think ), we are regular walkers so mile or so practical. Buses don't seem to run late.
We are concertina/guitar/vocals and would hope to do 'singarounds/club' things. Are there established venues or will this appear on prog later in year.

Thanks in advance.

Are you booked for Folk Week, or for another date in the year?

We are looking for people to share a Whitby flat with for the week. Twin room available. You pay a bit less than half.

Chapter House

It's dead central (the furthest venue is probably the Middle Earth, about a mile). Parking is probably impossible, I haven't investigated. (The site says "On street parking in the area" - dream on). Probably simplest to leave your car in a different town.

In the summer the last bus from Whitby leaves about 10.30pm.

There is ample (to pay ) parking in Whitby early morning but it fills very quickly and is quite expensive. You even have to pay for the disabled spaces in Whitby and Scarborough, Street (free) parking is like gold but again a very early start might find you a space.

Taxi's are an option and set against parking charges are reasonably inexpensive and far more flexible.

I'm assuming that you are thinking of coming for the Festival -

There are lots of formal (in the programme) sessions as well as informal ones. Just walk around and listen.

Festival Office and the Craft fair are good sources of info and both have areas where you can chill out if needed - particularly good food in the cafe at festival office.

There are official activities in RHB every afternoon - these are in the programme.

A festival programme is more essential than a festival ticket and needs to be bought in advance so that time can be planned wisely - there really is so much going on.

Parking in Whitby can be difficult but not impossible; it really depends when you are going. I go regularly and always manage to find somewhere to park. I may have to drive around certain places for several minutes but I often park on a road parallel to West Cliff or if you go down Love Lane across the mini roundabout and straight towards the sea there are places there to park with no restrictions and it is a lovely walk along West Cliff to get into the town. At quiet times of the year I use Cliff Street car park which is small and in the town centre.

It depends very much on when you are coming over, the last bus out of Whitby at the moments is (I think) at 6.30pm it runs through the Bay to Scarborough.

Monday :- Fleece (pub closed until further notice)
Tuesday :- Station - practice session
Tuesday :- Elsinore - Open session all welcome
Wednesday :- Fleece (pub closed until further notice)
Thursday :- Friendship Rowing Club Folk Club Occasional guests(practice session 8-9)
Friday :- Dolphin, Robin Hoods Bay Folk Club, Occassional Guests
Friday :- Dolphin, Whitby Open session
Sunday :- Station Folk Club, No guests

Folk week is somewhat different and very busy !

a taxi to Whitby from Robin Hood's Bay will cost about £9 or £10 so if you can find another couple to share the journey with it's not bad compared to the cost of parking (and petrol) and much less shredding on the nerves than trying to find a space :)

here's a link to the Arriva 93, X93 Scarborough to Middlesbrough timetable (it comes up showing Middlesbrough to Scarborough first) click on the 'current' tab to change it to the after April timetables and the 'return journey' tab then the + sign to get the times from Robin Hoods Bay into Whitby   :)

Thanks for all info - not very bright of me to forget to mention date - yes the folk week.
If summer bus leaves 10.30 thats going to be useful for couple of evenings.

Sori Jack can't take up offer as may have family in tow - hence larger property in RHB ( is the Dolphin only venue active in RHB?)

Re parking

There is a week long parking ticket available for all the pay car parks.

The last time I bought one it was about £30.

Most of the pay car parks usually have some room although the one on Church Street is problematic - that said apart from the Endeavour, which is only just over the river from the main central car park, there is very little generally on the East Side.

The advantage of the weekly ticket is that you can move at will from car park to car park. This would be very useful when moving instruments and people about. If you have a nominated driver (non drinker) then use of your own car would be best, especially on the Friday (last night) of the festival when taxis are like hens teeth.

PS No doubt some smart person will tell me I don't know what I'm talking about but I do try to help!

There's usually a 'half a day at the Bay' free event in the Dolphin each afternoon Monday to Friday with festival guests. It is possible to walk between Whitby and Bay along the former railway line. Bus in, shared taxi back is the sensible way.

Apart from the wonderful events provided by the Festival Committee, there are extensive fringe events in Whitby pubs. There's singing every evening in the Endeavour, Station and Middle Earth, tunes elsewhere.

RHB is do-able in Folk Week, but only just! Travelling between the two places by bus is really not practical though. We have done it twice (staying at Bay during FW that is!) and found that we really needed the car. However, a weekly parking ticket is not too expensive, and if the worst comes to the worst, the Abbey Car Park is rarely completely full, though you need to be fit to use it regularly.
The Contract Ticket though can be used an any of the Scarborough DC Long Stay Car Parks, which ever place you are in, including Bay.

Parking is a major problem in Whitby at the best of times. The official car parks fill up very quickly at normal times and they are very expensive. However, if you don't mind a bit of walking it's possible to find street parking not too far from the town centre. Another strategy is to find somewhere to park a mile or two from Whitby on a bus route, then go back at tea time and fetch your car in as the car parking charges come off after 6pm, though in these straightened times it wouldn't surprise me if Scarborough council have decided to extend the charges to 24/7.

Parking in Whitby will be particularly difficult during the first few days of the folk festival this year because it's the Regatta that weekend and on Monday as well... we'll be trying to park on Sunday after travelling up from Grove! (Fyldeplayer - does that mean you're missing WHFF this year?)

Booked cottage in RHB now - it's also a holiday so visits to Whitby maybe 3-4 times + eves. The Festival spill out to Dolphin sounds excellent as my wife seems keen I 'relax' with a few beers!
Yes HK, looks like WHFF will be missed this year. Hope to see you at singaround in Whitby.
Thanks all, every bit of info useful.

If you're in the Bay on the Friday before Folk Week there's a 'pre festival' night in the Dolphin on King Street :)

here's a link to Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club   :D
