On Thursday of this week (5th April) Brass Monkey will be revisiting the Electric Theatre in Guildford for the third time. Three years ago we welcomed them for their first ever outing with the "new" lineup incorporating Paul Archibald ... and on this occasion they will be visiting us as part of their celebratory 30th anniversary tour. The normal 5 piece line-up of Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, Martin Brinsford, Roger Williams and Paul Archibald will be supplemented by the appearance onstage of Shane Brennan. Shane has been depping for Paul when he has been unavailable in the more recent past. A little bird from the band was heard to say at the weekend that the arrangements for the six-piece band (with 3 brass players now) are very exciting ... so it should be a very good night! Further information, and details of how to book tickets can be found online here

I'm personally looking forward to it - hopefully some of you might be able to join us?

Hopefully

It went exceedingly well, and was a very special night. The new arrangements for the six piece are very exciting, and the band were obviously enjoying themselves immensely - and you're in for a fantastic time.

It was the first time I've seen a BM line-up, though i've seen Carthy and Fitzpatrick many times in other circs. It wasn't clear to me that the brass and (constant, sometimes intrusive) percussion added much, or complemented the repertoire particularly well, though they are all hugely accomplished musicians and there were some great moments.

Oh Peter - sorry to hear that, as I always think that Mr Brinsford brings a lot to the whole ... and for me (and others) the brass makes the whole thing come alive with exitement, or for example with the Night Visiting Song they were also able to bring a lot of atmosphere to the piece. I spent a lot of time listening to the various threads of music, and the brass harmonies with a silly grin on my face. The only thing that I didn't enjoy as much as usual was the new arrangement of the Maid and the Palmer, which seems to have taken some of the tension out of the piece - still good, but not quite _as_ good. And as for the party piece of Bull's " King's Hunt" - huge grins on that one.

Still, I suppose it is the case that we don't all respond to the same things. I'm glad though that you got the chance to see them live, and that you did find some great moments in there :-)
