From: maeve
Date: 19 Apr 12 - 09:03 AM

The Quasimodal Chorus will perform at the Camden Public Library in Camden, Maine May 3, 2012 at 7 pm. Here's a link: http://www.camden.lib.me.us/news/14084/quasimodal-chorus-in-concert-may-3/#more-14084

The Quasimodal Chorus! convened in Camden in 1984 to record for Gordon Bok's February Tapes. Jan Harmon invited the group to join her in her set at the 1987 Rockport Folk Festival at the Rockport Opera House, Rockport, Maine. The Quasis have been meeting in member's homes weekly ever since.

This year they are reviving a tradition of spring concerts at the Camden Public Library. This year's concert will feature choral compositions by members Gordon Bok, Anne Dodson, Jan Harmon and Bob Richardson and solo, duet, trio, and small ensembles of the group with original as well as traditional pieces. A capella songs as well as songs accompanied by keyboard, flute, percussion, whistles, dulcimer, guitars, banjo and cello will be included.

One Mudcat member will sing "Ice Storm" from the 2011 Mudcat Seasonal cd, "Until the Dark Time Ends", available in the USA from Camsco Music
http://camscomusic.com/contact.html and in the UK from Mudcat's bradfordian- barriemathers@ntlworld.com

We'd love to see you, Mary. The concert is on a Thursday though, so that might be a problem.

I know, who runs a concert on a Thursday? It's the usual library concert series night. No tickets; pay at the door and the door opens at 6:30.

Do they all swing from the bell tower in Notre Dame as they sing?

Naughty Will! You'll confuse the poor souls who have trouble distinguishing between the kind hearted gentleman of Notre Dame and the musical discussion of modality.

We're very exciting performers- note the exclamation point in our name!

Seriously- some mighty fine musicians in our chorus; it's an honor to sing with 'em.

Thanks, Jeri. You'd have enjoyed the diversity of music and performance style and I'd have enjoyed seeing you. Work happens!

Sandra, all I know is that we enjoyed singing to our audience, and that they listened intently, sang along at the right places, laughed at our jokes, gave a standing ovation, and stayed through the encore. I was struck by how many people stopped chorus members afterward to say "Thank you."

We've been experimenting with stirring in more small group/duo/trio pieces than usual for our folk chorus. We heard some voices that have been blending well for years but had not had a chance to sing out, and that was delightful. In the course of the months of rehearsal, we also found some new combinations of voices that I hope we will continue to hear.

I'm grateful and honored to have Lois Lyman ("Wiscasset Schooners", "Going On", etc.) contribute her lovely vocal harmony and guitar to my singing and guitar when "Ice Storm" rolled around. A trio of two sopranos and a tenor sang a close harmony arrangement of "Crossing the Bar"-poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, music by Rani Arbo. G. Bok and C. Rohl sang Malvena Reynolds' "Quiet" for our general amusement and joined Lois Lyman on her lovely "Going On" (also recorded by Dan Schatz.) I was happy to be involved in several very different small group songs: "Los Bilbilicos", "A Phiùthrag 's a phiuthar" /"Sister's Lament" from Flora MacNeil via Gordon Bok, "Lee Fore Brace"- poem by Cicely Fox Smith, tune by A. Fitzsimmons, arranged by Gordon Bok, and "Dai Se Vase" from the Bisserov Sisters of Bulgaria.

Full chorus pieces: "Visperas de Asuncion"- from Savia Andina of Sikuri Kachiri with 2 whistles, drum, and 2 guitars as instrumentation, "Suite Spring" by Jan Harmon, Malcolm Dalglish's arrangement of "Bushy Tail" (in honor of Lotus Dicky) accompanied by banjo and mountain dulcimer, Malcolm's "Walking in the Cradle", Gordon Bok's setting of "Tom Gunnell"- poem by Hilary Cooke, Anne Dodson's "Mountain Path", "Traveller's Prayer" by John Renbourn (based on Alexander Carmichael's collection "Carmina Gadelica") Gordon Bok also made "Donkey Engine" in which the chorus creates the sound of a boat's donkey engine with traditional verses sung by a few members.

Hours after the concert, I awoke with Quasimodal member Robert Richardson's "Ballad of John Franklin" still ringing in my dreams; a gorgeous composition with a trio of young instrumentalists- flute, keyboard, and cello interwoven with our voices; based on a poem by George Boker (1823-1890).

Singing with the Quasimodal Chorus! is a one-of-a-kind experience; sometimes challenging, often sublime. I think it was a significant concert for us, and I think we'll be stronger having tried some new material and styles.

Went immediately to bed upon arriving home with lovely music ringing in my head.
The variety of music, instrumentation and material made for delightful evening that simply flew by.
The chorus really seemed to enjoy their material and each other especially doing the Donkey Engine and Suite Spring. Too many magic moments to tell all. My favorites: Crossing the Bar - lovely close harmony, Mountain Path, Visperas de Asuncion which included a lovely ballerina in the back doing very exotic Flamenco moves much to our enjoyment, Lee Fore Brace, and...Ice Storm. Our Maeve outdid herself with a magical rendering of tender moments between her and TrueLove. A stunning song.
There were more. I will let Jacqui add to this. Going On, for example, is simple and beautiful.
It was interesting to see a fairly large group of people made of many "stars' working together with no ego and producing such magic.
Unfortuantely, we had to dash off and I never got to look over the CDs.
Next time.

what a wonderful evening! Well worth the drive to Camden. I was going to go alone and so it was a real pleasure to have Mary's company, especially as she did the driving, leaving me free to crochet away the time.

The music was splendid. We sat in comfy armchairs right at the back of the room - lost some of the view but could hear everything clear as a bell.

My favourites were Going On and Crossing the Bar - got to learn both of them soon! It was nice to hear the small group items - one could appreciate the individual voices more that way than in a large group and I think it made the whole performance more interesting.

Maeves beautiful voice rang out loud and clear against Lois's harmony in Ice Storm - such a beautiful piece of work, which can be heard on the 'This Is Us' collection of Mudcat CDs. Gordon's Donkey Engines was so much fun and it was clear the the Quasis really enjoyed that one, as was the case with Suite Spring.

Tom Gunnell, a poem by Hilary Cooke, set to music by Gordon, wasa piece that I hadn't heard before but would love to hear again. Gordon and Carol sang Quiet, by Malvina Reynolds, and had the audience laughing. What a sweet little song!

All in all, a great evening. This is a group of people who clearly enjoy singing together and who, over the years, have formed a magical bond. More please!

Glad to hear it went well! Sure wish I could have been there! It must have been wonderful indeed.

Just for the record, though -- Lois' last name is Lyman, not Lymond. She's been my closest friend for over 50 years now, ever since we were college roommates. I know she was looking forward to this concert. When she was visiting here a couple of weeks ago, she was rehearsing the songs -- apparently a good plan!

Any mudelf wandering by: I crave the favor of a correction in my post at 07:42 AM: The fourth paragraph should read, "I'm grateful and honored to have Lois Lyman..."

Thanks.

The Quasimodal Chorus! will again appear as part of :

Anne Dodson & Friends 26th Annual Seasonal Program

For the past 25 years Anne Dodson and her many talented friends have rung in the holiday season with a concert that celebrates life, love, loss and general silliness. This year the concert will be held on Sunday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the First Congregational Church in Camden.

This year's program stays "in house" with an all-returning cast featuring The Quasimodal Chorus, Matt Szostak, Will Brown, The January Men and Then Some, David Dodson, and Hazel Delehey. As usual, the concert challenges the definition of "seasonal" with songs from such far flung places as Africa, Italy and Wisconsin and makes room for a wistful and nostalgic look back (or way ahead) at summer!

Once again, the concert is the closing event of "Christmas by the Sea," Camden's annual weekend of holiday festivities.

Anne Dodson and Friends began in 1987 when then Camden residents Jan and Charlie Brown were running the Camden Folk Club; a monthly series of concerts in the Pilgrim Room of the First Congregational Church. They booked Anne to be the featured performer for December and asked if she would "play a couple of seasonal" songs. It was so much fun that the tradition continued, becoming more of a holiday celebration each year, until participants and audience outgrew the room. For one year the event moved to the Camden Opera House, which provided a wonderful space, but lacked the intimacy that had become the trademark of the annual concert. Moving back to the Sanctuary of the Congregational Church provided a larger hall while maintaining the informality for which the concert is known, and it has been held there ever since.

Over the years the concert has hosted special guests from the community and from places farther a field and as diverse as Canada and South Africa, all the while maintaining a core of local stalwarts including The Quasimodal Chorus and some incarnation of The Grove Street Singers. As always, "Anne Dodson and Friends" is a warm, informal concert, where the musicians take delight in blurring the line between performer and audience as together the community wraps up another year.

Doors open at 6:30 PM and advance tickets are available at The Owl and the Turtle in Camden and at Rock City Cafe in Rockland. Tickets may also be reserved in advance, to be held at the door. Adults: $13 advance, $15 suggested donation at the door. Children (6 -12): $6 in advance, $7 suggested donation at the door. Free under 6 years. Refreshments will be served. For more information or reservations call (207)236-9576.

I'm absolutely heartbroken that I can't be there, but unfortunately, I live over in Europe. I do hope that the concert will be recorded.

Dear silver,

Thanks for your kind words. It's unlikely that we'll be recording this concert, but I'll ask. I'd like to have a recording of it too.

"So Bravely Dream" is the only Quasimodal album we've made. It was great fun and an incredible amount of hard work to make that recording, but you can also hear us on many of Gordon's albums.

In case you don't already have it bookmarked, here are links to Gordon's and Anne Dodson's websites. I'll add Cindy Kallet's as well, since she's another much loved and respected member of the Quasimodal Chorus- she's recorded with Gordon, too.

Soon as I have time I'll be glad to post a run-down, Sins and ChanteyLass.
I think Kath Westra was the only 'Catter there, but she may not have time to visit the thread. I took some notes on songs and authors, etc. so when I've finished some neglected home and yard chores (in the falling snow) and had a rest, I'll try to put together a description of sorts.

I'm glad to see that one of Jan Harmon's songs was included. I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't recognize many of these songs!

ChanteyLass- Why feel embarrassed- that's what we aim for, a few familiar pieces and lots of new delights!

Jacqui- You were missed.

Kath Westra says she'll stop by when she has time to tell about the concert from the audience's side.

Most definitely did enjoy it, Sins. This was Anne Dodson's 26th concert, and I've been there for the last +/- 20.
