Posting Threads on Mudcat is kind of like 'going fishing.' I think about a topic I would like to know more about; that's the bait. Then I cast out my rod and see what fish I can catch. Sometimes I catch dolphins(gentle ones) or sole (spiritual ones) other times I get sharks (whitty ones) or red snappers (mad ones) . Once in a while I get tangled up with a sting ray. I love checking to see if there is anything on my line. Depending on the waters I choose to cast in, will determine the type of fish I might find. As for me, being the size of a mino, I tend to feel more like bait. Little Neo

"Fishing is a jerk on one end of a line awaiting a jerk on the other". (Couldn't resist, and don't mean you, LN).

LOL, Peter! LilNeo, very nice analogy. Well put. I personally like the catch and release philosophy best when it comes to fishing.

Sorry Kat. Here one place we differ in our philosophy. I'm all for the catch and fry or bake philosophy myself. Emmm..emmm...emmm! I think the catch and release is hypocritical. Sorry. LOL.

Ahh, LN. Though at times you feel like the bait, you shall ever be the fisher. As for me, I swim in the depths of a clear Canadian lake..smokey this morning, as it clings to the dawn's mist. Down here, I have learned much about how to nibble and never bite...Don't take it personally. Your worm looks so very tasty but you see, I AM saving myself...for the ultimate sacrifice. The complete consummation. I have forseen my destiny in the lure of loon love. Yes, I have been drawn ever closer to the surface as he hunts and dives through my liquid territory. Iredicsent scales flash furtively among the lake algae. Useless to hide any longer here. He knows where I am. He caught me staring at him the first day we met. His sleek velvet plumes backlit against the orange sunset, wearing a halo of flame and a coat of sprinkled snow over his shoulders. Loon is a patient bird and no, he shall not go hungry awaiting me. Soon I shall be ready, Soon he'll come for me. Soon I shall yeild to the call and lure of loon love.

Little Neophyte, once, on an occasion when I submitted a really, really deep thought for the day, I made a somewhat creative, if injudicious reference to marginal creatures that inhabit our world, including a heron in a marsh and outlaws, such as those portrayed by Waylon Jennings. I have never been allowed to forget this, at least in Catspaw's fevered imagination. As Big Mick can attest, because Catspaw is somewhat OBSESSIVE in his references, i.e. repeats them as if they were funny a zillion times, you cannot escape the tag. It is impossible to protect against this, so you might as well just continue your merry antics. Catspaw will latch on to something, and then you are toast. It has an extensive historical ancestry. For instance, whenever Athena appears in Homer, she is referred to as "ox-eyed Athena" (known as a recurring epithet). Tolstoy does the same in "War and Peace" - Lisa Bolkonsky has an upper lip that does not quite cover her teeth when she speaks, and this is always referred to whenever she appears. It is used by authors when they wish to keep track of multiple characters, as in the ongoing Mudcat saga. Your time will come.
yours, Peter T.

Trust friend Peter T. on this one, dear Little Neophyte whose fish I am about to take to the griddle. Brother 'Spaw, whom I love like a brother, will get you.........turn on your imagination for a moment and imagine that you are the Big Mick........it's a stretch but do your best. There you are at the long awaited and much anticipated FSGW Getaway. You are in the workshop with all your old friends just met......you have sung one of your signature songs and it seems to have gone well. This song creates a particular atmosphere. You are feeling OK about the performance..........you look up and see the beautiful Anna P. coming across the room to you with a sweet smile on her face......or so you thought, cause it turned out to be a devious smile.......she hands you a lovely package and wrapped in tissue paper in the package is a spud, known as a potato in most parts.......the place laughs their collective arse off and the mood you worked so hard to establish is gone.......They all know who it is from and you realize that you have just been buried in Catspaw's litter box............I loved it. And something like this will happen to you at some point.

Mick

Annap, I don't even catch...I was just saying that if someone must, I'd prefer that they continue on to the sweet release. My daughter's hubby is from Antigua where they eat gorgeous tropical fish. The first time her father-in-law brought some home to CT (frozen) and served them up, she couldn't bring herself to eat one bite because of their beauty. I don't know when, but she must've tasted them and liked it because now she thinks nothing of it.

Whenever I think about the big fish getting the little fish, i.e. human versus fish, etc. I remember a huge goldfish I had who was so stupid he accidentally sucked up the head part of a small plecostamus; the poor plec got stuck in his mouth. I had to literally hold the goldfish and pull on the plec with tweezers, underwater, so that at least one of them could live. The plec was dead, but the goldfish couldn't breath and his gills were like barbs preventing me from pulling the plec out. I know it sounds gross, but it really was an incredible experience. I did get it out and the gluttonous goldfish did live.

I don't know why that seems an appropriate story unless its to point out the morals about bigger fish to fry or biting off more than we can chew?!!

Lil Neo, I told ya about 'Spaw, didn't I?**BG** For more on the potato saga, see one of the later Tavern threads, probably No. 7 or 8.

BW....beautiful little gothic-type tale; but do ya think ya could put off the loon consumation for awhile and stick around here with us; yu've a nice voice!

Kat, you and my Honey, Glenn, are of the same mind. I fish off my gazebo and sometimes I'll catch a blue, sea bass, fluke or sea robin (I let those go) and he refuses to be there. He insists fish belong in the water being beatiful, not on a hook, or on a plate. It's not something we argue over though. We just respect each others ideas on the subject. I eat, he ignores.

Love, annap

..."Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day." --George Carlin

Li'l Neo and BeesWing....beautiful analogies both...yes - it's true...I seek those introspective nooks and crannies where people store away their most treasured and guarded items, and it's all too rare a treat and an honor when someone musters the courage or feels comfortable enough to allow a select few a brief, intimate glance at their soul....to display oneself thusly - to lay bare one's emotional vulnerability with reckless and willing abandon; to give oneself over with purposeful aforethought, defenseless - deludes me for a fleeting moment into believing that dead aspirations of hope and love can indeed be revived.

And makes all the mundane, inconsequential and insignificant motions we go through welcome for a peek at these precious gems.

Regards, Neil (lifelong member of A.G.I.: Advocacy for Global Intimacy)

Neil Young goes Fishing

The grizzled guide held a kitchen match to his pipe, pausing his story for a moment while he stoked the flame."Yep, was about 4 years ago. I was overhauling a 12 horse Evinrude by the dock when a sort of School Bus pulls up, all painted paisley . Out gets a guy in a suit n tie tells me he's Neil Young's agent, and Mr Young is extremely stressed from his tour and wants to unwind by doing some bass fishing. So do I have three or four boats for Mr Young and his entourage?

Now while he's telling me this, about eight hippies get down out of the bus and are standing in a circle kicking a little cloth ball in the air and passing a cigarette around. I says to the agent, I've got two boats but one's minus the motor as he could see. Bottom line is I end up taking this Neil Young feller out, just me n him in the boat. We get to the hot spot where the small-mouths are biting, and this guy starts to sing some song about how he needs a Maid. I say, yeah I could use one too because the bathroom hasn't been cleaned in three years, but he better quit singing for now because it will drive the fish down too deep.

I'm not sure but I don't think this feller had ever fished before. It took him almost 10 minutes to get his lure on, and when he did he hooked me in the ass on his back-cast. I think his confusion was due to the odd-smelling cigarettes he kept chain-smoking. When he finally got a line in the water I breathed a sigh of relief, but he starts yammering about it's an umbilical connection between him and mother earth, and that the miracle of the fish is the result of a holy union with Father Sky, and on and on belaboring the metaphor and adding on to it, when he suddenly gets a bite! Well, I shout alright! or something like that and look over at him and he's standing up reeling in the fish ! "Don't do that!" I said, but too late- the line breaks and the feller topples over backwards into the lake.

He had apparently smoked too many cigarettes to climb back into the boat, so I had to tie a rope to the cleat and haul him in. Now some folks say this Neil Young feller is a genius and a great songwriter and so on, but I'll tell you this: He ain't no fisherman.

Leej you either gotta' publish this stuff or have yourself permanently committed to "Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed"...actually I think Neil Lowe just returned after drying out from his latest attack of pseudo-happiness.

And don't worry 'Phyte, if you're in need of the Center's services, we can provide transport with the Insanevac chopper which is at the ready and manned by the great El Swanno. Plus Rick will provide you with a Tiple at no charge while you're there, providing you learn the Oscar Mayer Wiener song and a proper F chord. Don't worry if its stolen, Rick's already lost 835 guitars that way plus a 12 string that imploded. If you're really into Peter's "Waylon Heron" though, I'm sure he'd be happy to send you the scruffy ass red-headed woodpecker that he dresses like Willy Nelson.

Spaw - happily blowing up Cleigh's ass

Damn LEJ, Another (pardon the expression) keeper. How many people sit up nights praying for an excuse to write "hooked me in the ass on this back cast" ? That's not the only great line, of course. You can ride in the front seat of the Insanevac. Cheers, E.S.
