I was chatting with Wildone and Jon Freeman and we thought it might be a good idea to have a UK mudcat gathering. Initial thoughts were possibly near Harrogate as this is supposed to be mid way between Cornwall and Inverness. Or possibly join in with Whitby Festival so as we don't have to organise anything, just turn up. Has anyone got any ideas or comments. Cheers Bill

There would already be several mudcatters at Whitby, so that would be my choice. I think there's another from Grimsby way goes out with the Scratch Morris.

Good idea Bill at the moment I think we can probably get 10 (ten ) into the JUG with a bit of effort on a Wednesday Night.Why not have a date during the Winter months for a gathering there close to M62 etc. Then during the summer lets DO Whitby.That would also give the opportunity should anyone wish for a INTERNATIONAL gathering.

The Jug definately! As for Whitby thats an idea. OR what about the Cleckheaton folk festival in July? Harrogate no problem, but where? Anyone know a real friendly pub that would allow it'self to be taken over for a night? Eric.

There's a Mudcat "gathering" in Cornwall the week after next! BAZ and yours truly -- The Kuwait (DC-removed) and Cornish Mudcat Connection ... See ya'll (that's "Southern" Cornish) in Cadgwith ... or Morvah or Newbridge ...

I'd definately go along with Whitby - and would love to see as many of the American/Australian/any-other-country members who wish to visit a very good festival. For those in the know - Malcolm would probably have a heart attack!

Theres a great Pub Hotel right on the "strow" {SP?} in Harogate A rather young crowd was their last December but a nice big space with rooms upstairs! I wish I was there...Go to fountains abby for me..Not far and incredable{NR.Ripon} ...All the best from New England,Guy

Money is always the problem with me so the Whitby idea would get my vote as I could combine the gathering with what I believe is a great festval - 2 things for the price of 1!

Just one other thought: I can't quite remember what was said on the last Mudcat radio show but if this is to happen and be a "Mudcat" gathering, wasn't it suggested that this should be cleared by Max?

What about Holding gatherings at other festivals?

Fylde Folk Festival is in September - I'm sure I could arrange a room in a pub for a gathering maybe on the Friday afternoon/evening (the first day proper). Let me know and I'll put it to the committee at the next meeting.

If the meet is to be at a festival an evening would be better as people have to travel distances. This year I didn't get to the Fyle until the saturday lunchtime. Due to domestic difficulties-NO! not the wife!! Our dog had to undergo emergency surgery on the friday-long story but it cut my time down. So a weekday evening or a Saturday morning before the gigs start might be good. See you all. Cheers. Eric.

Just heard from Max the UK Mudcat gathering has his blessing but he has not said wether he could come over. It would be great if the US catters could charter a Jumbo and come over en masse. Cheers Bill

I'd vote for Fylde - but Whitby (where Graham Moore gave over a lot of his workshops last year showing us all his magic laptop version of the Digital Tradition) would do fine. Or Sidmouth. Call it a workshop and get it on the programme. With autographed CD Roms of the Digital Tradition on sale at all the right places. That'd piss of Hary Fox and company (see trace on Mudcat under thread)

The UK gathering does not mean only UK catters It would be great if we could see others from Europe and the USA and if anyone is wanting to get out of the Ausie Olympics (Alison) they would be most welcome. We would even like to see Icelanders (Scarpi) The weather here is not always raining and temperatures sometimes do reach the 80s and Yorkshire is a very pretty county (if you can afford the petrol to get there) Cheers Bill

Re: Whitby, the tap and spile is one of the best pubs in Whitby(beer is superb and the landlord and landlady are very fond of folk music)

What about Towersey? maybe one of the "un-used"(for music that is) bars of the incomparable "Three Horsehoes". With an Irish session in the public bar and the best IMHO unaccompanied singing in the World in the Barn. For our American and other non-UK friends, It takes place on August Bank Holiday in Oxfordshire and is truly sublime.

Fionan, there were definitely novice workshops at Whitby this year: melodeon, whistle and mouth organ coming to mind first off. Unfortunately most details of the week are starting to blur again, as tends to happen! The Tap is a great place, but there would be more room at the Buck, as the Tap is usually heaving for most of the week. Both are central to the town. mouldy

Re: my earlier comment about Whitby. I've now spoken to Malcolm Storey (the director)and we have agreed that Mudcat will happen as part of the festival. I will be running a workshop about Mudcat (and other internet issues around folk music) as well as a "gathering". I'll keep you posted about details when they are worked out. Looking forward to seeing you all in August!
